I stopped listening to the no agenda show many years ago when I just decided that I didn't want to be worked up and angry about the world everyday of my life.

Turn off social media, turn off the news. Even local news. It's never going to make you feel good about anything. I get a weekly newsletter digest of happenings around the world and that's all I need.

My daily mood and outlook on life has increased immensely since.

There is a lot of nuance missing in public discourse about the US threats of leaving NATO, stopping direct arms support of Ukraine (except for intelligence), and generally scaring NATO members and Europe into funding their own defense.

Every USA president since the fall of the Berlin Wall has implored NATO members take control of their own defense. The US has long since abandoned the two theater war doctrine. The US is not going to fight Russia. Doing so would just be taking the bait to split their forces when China simultaneously decides to mobilize in the South China Sea. All of USA military planning has been in preparation for that theater.

Trump's belligerence has accomplished the US foreign policy goals of every administration for the last 40 years.

I never said anything about ASML stealing technology or ingenuity. The point is that EUV photolithography is an international effort. The machines don't exist at all without about 6 different countries contributing technology and expertise.

ASML has certainly proven itself to be a very capable integrator of many international technologies and processes.

A great achievement of European science and technology

It's an amazing piece of technology but this is... wildly wrong. ASML is a multi-national company that licenses IP largely from USA and Japan, but also Taiwan and Germany. The actual EUV light source is developed and produced in California by Cymer, which ASML acquired in 2013. But ASML was only permitted to acquire the company under a strict technology sharing and export control agreement with the US government. Additionally, a huge portion of the photolithography research is directly developed (and owned) by US companies and research organizations such as IBM, Albany NanoTech, and SEMATECH.

There is a reason why ASML's next-generation research photolithography machine is currently being installed and developed in upstate New York, and not somewhere in the Netherlands. The same reason that Cymer is still in San Diego instead of being relocated to Europe. Because it's American technology.

But Europe certainly plays a huge role in it.

I don't care about sports betting. I care about government blocking websites just because it exists on the internet. It was already illegal for Polymarket to accept bets from French people.

FanDuel cannot operate in France but their website isn't blocked. So how do we explain this?

France, EU, Italy, Spain, La Liga are just consistently making fools out of themselves trying to block everything on the internet when they don't like it.

Maybe it's just because regulatory censorship is inconsistent and doesn't make any sense. It's like the China firewall but even dumber and less effective.

After failing to compel Polymarket to geoblock France, it's crazy that French "regulators" can just order ISPs to block a website without any judicial review just because the mere existence of it on the internet constitutes "advertising" to French people.

It seems like the EU in general is struggling badly with how to control internet access. Whether it's blocking VPNs, requiring access to private chats, or just blocking websites completely.

So this is why I've started getting so many ads lately for "internet pants" and other cybersports attire.

You have to actually like the work though. It's one thing just to recognize that it's a good career with a lot of security and good pay. But if you don't actually like the work, i.e taking care of people when they're at their worst, then you are going to be 100% miserable within 5 years and looking for another career change.

So now we're just layering on our own brittle validation and runtime checks to make up for sqlite's woeful deficiency supporting even basic domain data types.

Well for one we should probably validate that the number is smaller than the total life of the physical universe.

SQLite will gladly store a u64::MAX as a "unix timestamp" despite it being about 300x larger than the number of seconds that the universe and everything in it has existed.

Try reading that back in any application date/time code and your app probably crashes immediately.

so now we've traded a text column for an int column that still can't validate that the number is actually externally consistent with the real world.

I guess I am one of those "architects" that imagines they need an actual date/time storage class instead of some stringly-typed text column that I hope will contain a parsable ISO8601 datetime string when I try to read it back.

Hipp said that it will never be added because it will bloat the size of the embedded object. Because that is what SQLite was designed for: single-user embedded databases. Like the address book on your phone.

These posts need to stop comparing their contrived use-cases for SQLite to Postgres. Sure, SQLite is all you need if it really is all you need. But Postgres does so much more than just act as a data dump with an SQL engine on top.

Dr. Hipp himself even said that SQLite does not, and will never, compete with the likes of Postgres. It competes with fopen.
