There was never a "Blackberry Razor" product. There was the Motorola RAZR phone that was just a flip phone that was very popular for a few years before the iPhone, and then there were Blackberry phones of the time which had small screens and small keyboards. Some people loved them but they were a fairly niche product mostly used by professionals who valued email access at all times.

When the iPhone came out it was a true revolution and the plans for Android phones at the time were entirely redone.

Impossible burger’s patty is on par with a McDonald’s quarter pounder. Which is a reasonable accomplishment. It’s acceptable and enjoyable as a cheap burger. But it is not gonna fool anyone who really enjoys a good burger.

Secondly deaths by homicide in the US aren’t even close to that. California had the most murders of any state in 2016 and it wasn’t even 2000, then it drops off quickly from there. Total murders in the US is less than 20k per year. For your number to be right guns would have to be stopping 93.7% of murders.

Freedom of speech is about censorship from the government. As much as Silicon Valley companies love to self aggrandize they are not the government and are under no obligation to allow their platforms to be used for furthering hate speech (or anything else.)

In fact I firmly believe sites like Reddit, Twitter and Facebook allowing racism and other horrible crap on their sites in the mid 2000s until recently is what helped make it more mainstream. In the web of the 1990s these idiots would have had to go to their own sites that nobody else goes to. Mainstream sites like Slashdot or whatnot didn’t tolerate it. For some reason after the dot com crash the new round of sites afterward have had some kind of delusion that they need to uphold free speech. And it’s nonsense.

So what's the solution? If a big company opens a factory in an area, then the hire a bunch of people at that factory, people obviously want to move closer to where work is. It's not like those people can then say "Hey we need another company to open a factory here just in case." Even if there are other jobs created in the town, the loss of hundreds (or thousands) of jobs is always going to be devastating anywhere outside of a big city.

It's easy to say "Oh well those people shouldn't have bet everything on that factory." but that's not realistic or providing any kind of solution.

In the US a lot of companies just don’t have the bandwidth to hire someone straight out of university. A degree is great but 10 out of 10 times I would rather have someone with four years of experience doing the work we are doing than someone with a four year degree and no work experience. It’s sad but it’s the truth. We aren’t a big enough team to spare the time and effort it takes to teach a recent graduate everything they are gonna have to learn in their first couple years. A lot of which is just about what being a developer is day to day.

Craigslist isn’t the place to go for jobs. Lots of people are looking for PHP developers. There’s job counseling services out there, go talk to a professional who specializes in cases like yours. Don’t listen to a bunch of HNers who have zero experience in your situation.

Kroger bought out a local chain here in Michigan (Hiller’s) that was way better than Kroger and then laid off the Hiller’s employees and killed the chain. I’m never gonna feel any sympathy for Kroger.

Nobody bothers to decouple them because usually rendering a terminal is trivial and the output rate isn’t as fast for most use cases. But it sounds like if you’ve done it before it might be a cool thing to contribute to your preferred open source terminal program (if you want to.)

Have a little more faith in the people running these missions than that. The landing spots for any missions we send over are chosn very carefully and with a lot of thought. There are specific goals for any mission and the landing sites are chosen based on those in mind.

I’m not talking about your home computer. Obviously your home computer shouldn’t have ssh exposed to the world on any port. I’m talking about a server that needs to have ssh available.

And I would argue while all the options you bring up are good suggestions; 1) they aren’t alternatives to having ssh on a non standard port, they are additional methods and 2) they will do nothing against system level exploits.

If you leave ssh on a standard port, when (not if) an exploit is released you are in a race to patch your system and at a disadvantage. And for what?

Other services are on standard ports for good reasons. There’s not a lot of good reasons to leave ssh on 22. Mostly just laziness.

Yes there are, but moving your SSH port is a low cost, very easy and effective way of doing it.

Well, first off, you probably should change your SSH port. Using a non-default one will cause most automated attacks to move on to something else.

Second, using numbers is far more memory/bandwidth efficient than using strings for ports.

Last, there's no good reason to make the massive effort it would take to change it to strings.

Apple has always commanded a premium for their laptops. Yes there’s competing specs out there for less but there always have been. I paid $3k for my Retina MBP in 2012 and it still works great for me today. It was a good buy for me.

If the MBPs available don’t seem worthwhile to you, no need to get upset about it, just don’t buy one.

When a production crew wants to use footage of you in a show they have to get you to sign a release. There probably needs to be some form of this for online exposure as well. What form that would take is a difficult question.

But most of the time, people just search for something, buy it, and are satisfied, never having to consider whether it was only fulfilled by Amazon.

What’s your basis for this? Just the fact that Amazon is so successful? What if that success is in spite of the third party sellers and not because of them?

I know my own personal experience with Amazon over the last few years has been feeling like I’m trying to outsmart the website which is constantly trying to direct me to buy from sources I don’t trust.

As a result I am more and more hesitant to turn to Amazon than I was years ago.

Is my case the common case or is your hypothetical one? I don’t know that we can say. But I think as more people get burned by bad actors they will become less likely to use the site. My basis for this is eBay, which is a shadow of its former self. Being over taken in many areas by niche sites that specialize in a certain market and are at least perceived as more trustworthy. (E.g. Reverb for musical instruments.)

Waiting to find your passion is a dead end. But seeking out what you're really interested in and enjoy, and making that your career is great advice.

Maybe you don't know what you love yet, that's fine, go figure it out.

I'm coming up on 40 now, and I tell any young person I talk to that they should figure out what they enjoy and pursue that. If you fail, ok but trying is worth it. Life is short and work is a huge part of it. Spending 8+ hours a day on something you don't enjoy just for a paycheck is a tragedy.

This smacks to me of an "If you have nothing to hide why do you care about your privacy?" argument. Which we should all know is a major fallacy.

There's plenty of reasons to not want others looking over your shoulder that have nothing to do with goofing off. Private emails, even totally business related ones are just that, private. If you're struggling with a problem, having an audience can make it that much worse. Et cetera, et cetera.

The nature of software development makes it hard for a lot of people to do with lots of distractions around them.

- There's also way too much stigma against "time wasting." Your brain needs breaks and distractions to work through problems. Spending some time on a goof off site each day is not a bad thing in and of itself. If your productivity suffers, that's a problem that needs to be addressed. But it can happen via burn out just as easily as via spending too much time reading fan theories on Infinity War Pt. 2.

I wouldn't say never, but they haven't given up on it yet.

Of the people who aren't just straight up trolling, I think a large percent just like to be "controversial" and hold contrarian views that might blow somebody's mind. The Flat Earth nonsense is a pretty low stakes one for most people. It's really stupid but it's not inherently offensive apart from the stupidity. It's not racist or xenophobic or anything. I think that's why it's gained so much traction.

Frankly the best way to have it fade away is stop giving them attention, 'coz both the trolls and the contrarians want attention.

I wasn't saying there's no place for constructive criticism or critiques. Those are definitely useful and important.

But that's not what this article is, and I think we all know the tendency I'm talking about for people to spend more energy and feel more comfortable trashing things than talking about what they like.

Why do we as developers feel a need to constantly trash the things we don't like? If you don't like something, don't use it. Talk about the things you do like instead.
