I for one welcome our new Microsoft upvoting cabal

"Our work is driven by a belief that software should be free and accessible to all." We can um and ah about what free and accessible means, but Mark Shuttleworth continues to push the goodwill of the community, testing where its breaking point might lie (see the new secret features development system, and Amazon ads/spyware built into Ubuntu 12.10). Hence, this "Bug #1" is just empty posturing that attempts to ride on the rapidly evaporating goodwill of the community.
"Seriously, if you can't spel or have trouble with ALL CAPS, please ask a friend to proofread your email. Complete, grammatically correct sentences are a minimum requirement."
Phil! Is that Phil Phil or motion-capture salamander Phil?
Master plan for REVOLUTION: make an application that is double-paywalled.
* You have to pay for the content (The Magazine). * You have to buy an expensive Apple product to access it.
Poor Dustin - he has such a hard life. Don't let the bastards get you down...
... about your taste in cutlery.
Awesome site. Just awesome. The page transitions and text reflow are brilliant.
That big box on the right full of whatever that is (chat/twitter/whatever) is just a void that not only doesn't interest me, but means what I am reading (which is why I would be on the site if this wasn't a well-played usability test ;) is off to the side. I guess you'll iron out these kinks as time goes by, but yeah. That box on the right is just an ocean of who cares, to me.
Also there is a bug: when you are editing text in the chat box, it flicks pages back and forth.
Anyway I'm off to donate to your IndieGoGo campaign. Good luck with the rest of the project!
edit: had another look - I guess that box makes sense when you're collaborating on a story, but pure reading mode might be good as a default?
There are a lot of people who say 'hacked' in lieu of normal words for normal day-to-day tasks like 'did,' 'accomplished,' 'wrote a blog post,' 'watched,' 'logged in,' etc. We're apparently a long way past the point where most 'hacks' are actually worth discussing.
"How I hacked airtime by logging on and talking to people"
"How I Hacked My Breakfasts by Switching From Muffins to Crumpets"
"Hacking your toilet routine by using three sheets of toilet paper per wipe!"
git is a homonym.
>> moving on without him.
John Gruber wasn't moving at all
This seems like a strawman. You can't fairly compare a language to a book. A book isn't used universally to make other completely unrelated books.
Usability test failed, because what looks like a main menu is a bar of ads. That is just going anger anybody who feels they have been fooled into clicking an ad. I suggest removing it asap. You're going to lose people from your site before they have even looked around
Sure, but euphemism just doesn't fall under the umbrella of 'plainness,' in any way, shape or form. So you can't be euphemistic and tell the plain truth. It's just a bollocks statement.
They "need" pulseaudio? Yikes. I was hoping people had stopped using it D:
No offence, but as far as I can see, this does nothing that can't be done in vim (or one of its forks) with pathogen/vundle and the extant plugin ecosystem. Also I doubt people will want to pay if there is no native editor/terminal support. ;(
That might just be the first time Steve Reich has been mentioned in relation to Gangnam Style!
ps To the author/s (if you end up seeing this): was there a reason you didn't center the content on the page? Might look a little better. Just a suggestion :)
>> But he considers himself the BDFL of Markdown
Well he needs to be something other than a pathetic apple fanboy! :D
..but he used Microsoft products, 8 years ago! Doesn't that make him an expert on all things Microsoft?
This continued good-natured back-and-forth is nice to see. Kind of reminds me of something Stephen Potter (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_Potter) would have done, had he been in the tech industry :)
Depends on the criticism. Constructive criticism, sure. Blinkered, petty, negative criticism from someone who made up his mind years ago? Not so much.
Marco Arment enters a Microsoft store beady-eyed, looking for things to nitpick, sneering at everything, seeing the negative side of everything. Whodathunkit.
The article by this fully-grown adult is summed up as he bitches about how "he isn't told how to exit other stores." What a clown.
I think you might be right:
"Offering multiple quantities of a reward is prohibited. Hardware and Product Design projects can only offer rewards in single quantities or a sensible set (some items only make sense as a pair or as a kit of several items, for instance). The development of new products can be especially complex for creators and offering multiple quantities feels premature, and can imply that products are shrink-wrapped and ready to ship."
Who the hell wants ten ostrich pillows anyway? A ten-headed narcoleptic hydra?
I am hoping they add the forest behind my house so I don't have to take walks any more
Finally, they added it. Well I can tick that off of my list of dream holiday destinations!
Apple customers use public transport?
Well I doubt he'll be winning many new converts with this article. It is dense with straw-clutching and credulity. Some it seems to be simply borne of delusion. This sentence, for example:
"The bored-by-the-iPhone tech press/industry experts surely value niceness, but they do not hold it in the same top-tier regard that Apple does. They are not equipped to devote an amount of attention to niceness commensurate with the amount of effort Apple puts into it."
is the fruitiest thing I have read in a while
I think there is some strange website redirect happening. I clicked on daringfireball.net and ended up at boringfanboy.net
"I've made typos that I went back and corrected myself."
Gee, Quora _does_ sound like a really great party!
