This is one of those community consensus things. Most of the style guides and Apple's own examples usually include the opening brace on the same line as the conditional or method.

The real 50/50 proposition is having else on a new line. Some people love that and some hate it. It was hard for me to know what the consensus is, so I picked one way and if it turns out to not be what the majority find correct, others can correct it.

With Mad Men and Breaking Bad winding down, I wonder if AMC can maintain it. They seem to have garnered the reputation of being hard on showrunners (Both Matthew Weiner and Vince Gilligan have had issues with the network). Walking Dead is on it's third showrunner.

Another network, FX, seems to be trying the HBO/AMC model in getting quality programming and is going out of their way to appear showrunner friendly. It'll be interesting to see if they can capitalize on some of AMC's missteps in nickel-and-diming their own shows.

The solution to this problem was G+ and that failed too. I find myself using Facebook less and less. I'm not bitter about it and I'm not making a conscious decision to stay away. I just am finding less and less value in it.

I agree. There is a lot of attention paid to TOS changes lately. How could they not see that this would come with heavy backlash? I know he keeps saying "not our intention" in that post, but intentions don't amount to anything if the TOS clearly gives them carte blanche with your photos. Just some really bad public relations going on there.

I did Nanowrimo on a whim this year and it was a lot of fun (I doubt I'm actually any good at it, though). In doing it I found myself going to Gatsby and a Hemingway book (The Sun Also Rises) for examples of clear, direct prose. I thought back to this Thompson anecdote and thought to myself that if I ever wanted to really pursue writing, a straight copy of one of those books would help my prose ten fold.

So I agree with this article. Type out the code you're borrowing from, don't copy and paste. Also, tchlock23 is right in that you also need to start some small projects from scratch and suffer through them with minimal help.

Sort of off-topic and I've harped on this before, but when I search "google maps" in the app store, it's the fifth search result!

As a developer in the App Store, I really hope they do something to fix the abysmal searches in it.

If they really want to change the game, they need to find a way to offer a la carte network subscriptions and full on-demand (similar to HBOGo) for every channel. I would pay a premium for a service where I could buy HBO, ESPN and Comedy Central and have access to those network's entire archives as well as the latest programming.

Its obvious that is the future (HBO already does it and its amazing) so anything less would be a step in the wrong direction for them.

I'm confused here. It says nothing changes for existing customers but when I log into my domain's Google App dashboard I see this now: "Free 30 day Google Apps for Business trial" with an upgrade button. Does anyone else see this?

I get what you're saying but in this specific instance, Google was right to delete them from news.google and the general index. The newspapers can't have it both ways (pay us to show up on Google News but keep us for free on Google Search).

Not to turn political (And I'm independent) but Obama said something during the debates that rang really true to me. He said that the low level jobs in this country are going away for good and we need to focus on creating mid-level jobs.

It makes sense that as society and technology evolve, the low skill jobs will be replaced by automation. I think this is a good thing. In the long term, we shouldn't shun technology just because it keeps a real human from doing a mundane task 40 hours a week.

Full Disclosure: I'm an Apple user that has been criticizing them for the last few years for a variety of things but...

This article (at least the first half) comes down to:

Apple makes products that don't suit me (okay, so don't buy an iPad).

Apple has glued their new screens to the metal (Is this really that big of a deal?).

Apple uses proprietary screws (This has been done for years)

There are lots of things in the curated Mac App Store that are of no use to him (So don't use the App Store or don't buy apps that are useless to you)

In the comments, the OP admits that he will continue to use Apple hardware because it is the best but will run Linux (Apple makes their money off hardware sales, so its of no loss to them).

I think the biggest aesthetic change was between 04 and 08 which makes sense sine that was the era that so-called "Web 2.0" took off.

A lot of people criticize Apple for not being very innovative lately, but I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum. I wish they would slow down and take a breath and realize that they don't need to implement major changes every year. I almost wonder if Steve Jobs was pushing too hard for things to be released before he died.
