Why does it take 10 days? Because it's not powered the whole way. You fire the engines briefly from earth to get to near-escape velocity, then coast to the moon, all the while slowing down because earth's gravity is pulling you back. It's like kicking a ball up a hill to get it into a dip over the top: you need to kick it hard enough to just get over the hill - i.e. when the moon's gravity is stronger at that point than earth's. If you went powered all the way you'd need a lot more fuel, and you'd also need even more fuel to slow you down when you got there.

I spent approx 1 year working on a very hush project at FDA. It (I shit you not) had requirements to allow rerouting of drug application and progress reviews (workflow system) around list of folks determined to be overly zealous in ensuring requirements were met. On top of that, our contract was terminated with one week notice (we met every milestone) and was awarded to the project manager's husband's company. My company threatened to sue and was awarded the entire contract amount.
I've long been a fan of HP Voyager series calculators. I used an HP-11c daily at work years ago. I still have it, an HP-15c, and and HP-12c. The 11c and 15c are both probably still on their 2nd set of batteries, after 40+ years.
Interesting. Nobody writes about the Rural Electrification project which was to run electricity to very remote farms, then high speed internet to them. Turns out satellite (or Starlink) can do it for a tiny fraction of their budget. Also, nobody writes about the food pyramid which is totally non-science based. These are under USDA tho, not directly USAID. Interestingly enough, USDA works for Big Agriculture producers to, not for consumers.

The space station’s chemical-powered laser fired a burst of energy that, if it were visible light instead of infrared, would have been a hundred thousand times brighter than the sun. Five hundred and twenty kilometers away, the first burst hit the satellite with a power roughly equivalent to a welding torch’s. It melted a hole in WGS-4’s external atmospheric shielding and then burned into its electronic guts. Good article, but the author is using low numbers for the "speeding bullet" stats. Like many jobs both around the house and industrial stuff, know what you are doing before you attempt it. But go away with the "it's too dangerous for mere mortals" speeches and special legislation to protect us all. Many people are capable and willing to do work that is hard and or dangerous. Snowflake legislation doesn't help the world work. Darwin awards work for the betterment of society.
And those $138 billion in loans were not "forgiven". That would be the loan companies, or the universities saying "don't pay us" or "don't pay us back".
What happened is AHIC said "let raise everybody's taxes. We'll print more money and 'inflate it'. Nobody will notice."

Love this topic. Early in my computing career I was trying to modernize our software testing. I wrote a small pgm to generate the Cyclomatic Complexity of our Fortran code. I was especially pleased after discovering an error while working thru the IEEE paper McCabe had published.
That's sad and unfortunate. Experts and dealers of such equipment are a dissapearing breed. I have 2 slide rules; a super cheap plastic unit from high school days, and a full-sized Dietzgen I bought for a dollar (leather case and all). It was in a junked car at a pick'nPull yard. My skills have gotten very rusty, so now I prefer my HP-15c handheld or my HP-42c emulators on my iPhone.

There are an estimated 20,000 gun laws in the USA. Do you not consider that regulation? Why are noise mitigation devices regulated, often taking a full year to be approved? These are known as suppressors (silencers on TV and movies).
"I am infinitely more concerned that I'll be shot." - for real? That is extremely illogical, given the facts. I realize this data is about deaths rather than shootings. But its still applicable.
This is a little dated, 4-5 years maybe. There are 30,000 gun related deaths per year by firearms, and this number is not disputed. The U.S. population is 324,059,091 as of June 22, 2016. Do the math: 0.0000925% of the population dies from gun related actions each year. Statistically speaking, this is insignificant! What is never told, however, is a breakdown of those 30,000 deaths, to put them in perspective as compared to other causes of death:
• 65% of those deaths are by suicide, which would never be prevented by gun laws. • 15% are by law enforcement in the line of duty and justified. • 17% are through criminal activity, gang and drug related or mentally ill persons – better known as gun violence. • 3% are accidental discharge deaths.
So technically, "gun violence" is not 30,000 annually, but drops to 5,100. Still too many? Now lets look at how those deaths spanned across the nation. • 480 homicides (9.4%) were in Chicago • 344 homicides (6.7%) were in Baltimore • 333 homicides (6.5%) were in Detroit • 119 homicides (2.3%) were in Washington D.C. (a 54% increase over prior years)
So basically, 25% of all gun crime happens in just 4 cities. All 4 of those cities have strict gun laws, so it is not the lack of law that is the root cause. This basically leaves 3,825 for the entire rest of the nation, or about 75 deaths per state. That is an average because some States have much higher rates than others. For example, California had 1,169 and Alabama had 1. Now, who has the strictest gun laws by far? California, of course, but understand, it is not guns causing this. It is a crime rate spawned by the number of criminal persons residing in those cities and states. So if all cities and states are not created equal, then there must be something other than the tool causing the gun deaths.

I'm hooked as well. I recognize many birds by sight, and quite a few by their calls and songs. Many tho, especially smaller wrens, chickadees, etc I cannot tell apart. And others like vultures I see often but have never heard.
If they implemented a function to post your list for a single recording even to social media, usage would blow it up. I've recorded 15 species on a 10 minute walk. Blows my mind.

I live in the US, mid-atlantic region. This moment its 44°F and a wind chill of 25°F. My commute was 39miles each way. Quite often I experience jams and slowdowns such as 10mph on a 65mph highway, with headlights and heater on, or max AC in the summer when its mid 90°F. E-bike on some of these roads are illegal. If they weren't, they be death magnets.
My town has many e-bikes and scooters, mostly rentals. They litter the sidewalks and streets, sometimes are left in the roads. More often than anyone admits, the local youths throw them into the harbor - Boston Tea Party-style. You might go directly to the store and back, but you aren't making multiple stops as the few-as-they-are miscreants would steal your store #1 goods while in store #2. Or just take your bike, leaving you to shop and then rent another bike, all before explaining to the e-bike vendor that it wasn't you who mysteriously lost the GPS signal when your bike vanished at waters edge.
I'm a fan of EVs. But I'm not giving up my ICE vehicle. The 7 day electrical blackout at my home years ago convinced me of that. And people in dead EVs sitting in a blizzard in Texas a few years ago. With giant wind generators offline due to ice on the right, and oilfield pumps stopped for political reasons on the left.
