What about political influence? Irrespective of how much you can buy, if dollars equal political influence, which is not far from wrong, people in the middle class now have less control over their lives and those of their children.

I've a little bit periodically over the past few years. The most I've ever done is 20m at a time, but every day.

I've had the same reservations as you, is it doing any good, how can I tell? It is trivially easy to be wrong.

I do like something I see in the people who are more advanced practioners and I keep being drawn back to it.

My latest thinking is that since I can not for the moment find anything longterm to measure, I'll do it for the immediate enjoyment I get directly from the session - from physically relaxing if nothing else. This has now made my sessions very short, just a few minutes at a time before I stop enjoying it.

I'll add another recomendation for "Mindfulness in Plain English", I like it a lot. I'm slowly consuming it, reading a few paragraphs before each meditation session.

Get the biggest house in a lower-income neighborhood, constant self-esteem boost.

A great article, and a great illustration of the fact that you can't always judge the correctness of an action based on outcome, but only based on the information you had available at the time.

If QM turns out to be right, it doesn't mean Einstein was wrong to work against it. If string theory turns out to be right, doesn't mean the theoretical physics community was correct to invest all its time into it.

This situation makes me so mad my teeth hurt, but I don't think Goldman is at fault. They were no better or worse than other i-banks, interspersing themselves into the money flow, probably sucking out more value than they were creating -- I think so. The fault is with the government for bailing them out. They should be bankrupt, shareholders wiped out, company carved up and sold off, making room for better companies. Instead the government decided to give them billions (which they paid out as bonuses to themselves). It was ludicrous, the government gave them 100 cents on the dollar for AIG. Why 100, why not 120, why not 200, it would have made just as much sense.

The point is that the movie could have been so much more. The visuals are incredible, I think the best ever done so far, that's what makes it all the more unfortunate that the story was weak. With a strong plot, and the visuals this movie could have been over the top, goosebumps incredible. Instead I went out of the movie theater sad that all this incredible artistry was wasted and what a shame that was.

I think Cameron lost it. The story was a nothing, and there were a few lines in there so bad, you don't even often see their equal on terrible sitcom TV. They were cheesy video game cut scene bad, only the godhead visual prevented me from wincing.

I'd still recommend for folks to see this movie, it is incredible, but what a shame...

Ask HN: Wrist Pain 17 years ago

I used to have "chronic" wrist pain for 8 years, and have now been completely pain free for just over a year.

Saw many doctors, many bouts of physical therapy, many batteries of tests - steroid injections, nerve conduction, MRIs, rheumatologists, chiropractors, acupuncture, etc, none of that was helpful.

In the end exercise cured it. Now and again I had hints that exercise could help, I'd do bicep curls, or reverse curls, and it made the pain recede, but the relief wouldn't stick.

A year ago, I started doing wall push-ups, 1 set, daily, in the morning. In the beginning, I couldn't do one without pain. No fixed schedule, I just kept growing reps, still one set, having rest days when it seemed appropriate, probably about once a week. In 3 months I could 100 wall push-ups, with no significant discomfort. I'd also have a break of about 1-2 hours after the exercise, before I had to start typing for work.

At some point I added "finger extensions" -- wrap rubber band around the fingers, and straighten them, the load is the reverse of typing where you need force to curl you fingers. It seemed like a good idea to balance the load on the muscles. I'm don't recall when I added them in, my best guess is that they helped, I think the wall push-ups were the main thing.

When I started, I could type about 5000 keystrokes per day (so about 300 words), with pain, on a datahand keyboard. As things progressed, I increased keystrokes, then eventually switched to a Microsoft Natural keyboard, and recently to a regular one, with essentially no limitations on how much I type, and with no discomfort.

After 8 years of pain, my outcome has been nearly miraculous. Perhaps this will be helpful, and I hope a similar experience is waiting for you. Best wishes.
