Luckily, never have been. From thousands of kilometers away, Silicon Valley have always been a special place of its own, sometimes in a positive way, most of the times in a pretty awful way, but only people living in the Valley think they leave in the future.

I mean, the thing is literally tied (by default but few people are changing that) to the biggest video game selling platform of the planet. Actually given how Valve prints money without doing anything, I'm impressed they don't sell it for 99.99, they would immediately kill Nintendo and Sony (Xbox doesn't need that).

Steam client is pretty bad. It's slow, full of ads, inconsistent, complex ... Its only quality is that everything else is worse and that it have an interesting ecosystem and ok tier customer policies (but that's unrelated to the software).

The thing takes several seconds to start on my brand new gaming rig. Not insufferable but given its only usefulness is to list my games and start one, that's a lot.

The Xteink 4 has button. Else PocketBook are the kings of buttons (and well placed at that).

What I love with my pocketbook is that i can hold the thing by placing my right thumb on the "next page" button and my left thumb on the "previous page" button.

To me it's the most amazing feature of an e-reader against the real book : you can read comfortably with 0 movement. You just mindlessly press the buttons that are already under your thumbs to navigate the book.

And the bonus is that it's clicky and instant, which, as strange as it sounds, makes it the only device that I own that make me feel it's magic. Which is a shame because in another timeline, all our tech should be well designed and magical-like.

I'd install HaikuOS on it.

Though you can have some solid hints. First it's important to say we are talking about psychosis related illnesses.

First one is nobody had mental illness in your family. Second one is your age : most mental illness develop when you are a teenager or in your early twenties. If you are 30+, you can consider that LSD will not reveal anything hidden.

Though you still get the risk of bad trip, which you can manage with a good set & setting and not being alone if you prefer.

LSD is not addictive. Actually it’s the opposite, I take it way less than I would because I just forget regularly or I don’t want to take it at all. I take it (microdose) maybe once a week instead of once every three days.

I do want to take a bigger dose again because of the healing effects it had the first time but I’ve been procrastinating it for the last 6 months. So I’m stuck with irregular microdosing.

Also the effects are really long, like 12 hours. While it’s not an issue when you microdose (because you barely feel anything), it’s extremely complicated to find the right time to take anything bigger than that.

You need a full day free of any responsibility, in a good place and you need to want to dedicate the day to it. I have a job and I’m a dad so let me tell you that those days never happen :D

And the only time I took a biggest dose (half a tab), I felt very good after it but, hard to describe, I was was satisfied/happy with my experience and with the effects but still I just didn’t want to redo it for multiple months, not because it wasn’t good but because I felt I didn’t need it anymore.

I was in the same boat as you and it seems I solved it.

What I did :

- LSD (microdosing + a semi dose one year ago) did absolute wonders on my anxiety (which was what kept me energetic). I would then describe myself as having a general anxiety disorder and I now describe myself as chill af. It's amazing. I'm still stressed out by things but that's normal and not my default mode anymore.

- Prolonged-release melatonin keeps me asleep for the whole night

- Took the habit of reading in the bed. I'm so tired that most evenings, I have a really hard time to read 5-10 pages, I must fight to keep my eyes open.

There is a difference between vibe coding (asking an agent to generate an app from specifications) and leveraging agents to go faster on your vision. You can still decide to control the technical architecture and decisions and just let agents type on your behalf.

Sorry but I don't share your view. A society where the bottom 50% can't live a decent life is just dysfunctional. I don't care which country is best for the riches (and actually, Europe is good for the riches), I care that the economy is there to allow everyone to live a decent and meaningful life.

My point is that we are not in an AC crisis, we just need to change the laws so that owners are forced to provide, however they want, summer comfort in the same way they must provide winter comfort.

If you measure economical performance with PIB per capita, yeah, for sure, US has a better economy.

Actually, I'm baffled at how US performs poorly for their people given they have abundant energy. Norway and Iceland also have abundant energy and their people are seeing the benefits.

Europe is lacking AC because we never had to deal with 30°C at night before the last 5-10 years. And for the regions where we needed to (like, around the Mediterranean), guess what, AC is everywhere there.

You know what, me, an European, just received this morning ? The AC unit I ordered.

It's not hard to install AC in Europe, it's just that until a few years ago, we never needed it. The only real blocker today is when you are living in an apartment and the condominium council refuses AC installation for esthetical reasons, but it's something that can change (either by the vote of co-owners, or by law if needed). And if you are renting, you are stuck until the legislation changes and forces owners to provide summer comfort the same way they must provide heating in winter.

Google is used to put their shit into the Google Play Store contract they have with manufacturers.

Samsung, XiaoMi and OnePlus will let this pass because that will be that or losing access to Play Store. Oh and also they frankly don’t care at all because 99% of people will not know.

Android distribution are already incredibly shitty and most people are used since the 90s to have their computers and now their phones full of junk software. The average smartphone is not that different from the average windows XP/Vista PC of the 2000 era, with crapware everywhere, apps that are doing a lot of malicious things without the user even knowing (or frankly, caring).

I also don’t get why the « protection » on ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL. If I change it to use a Chinese model, the Chinese model will not care at all about the modified prompt. On the contrary, if I’m distillating (which again, using CC CLI would be stupid), I’m not going to change ANTHROPIC_BASE_URL.

With color now so critical to tell icons apart, it should be no surprise that the new “Clear” and “Tinted” icon styles added in Tahoe are seeing so little uptake. As Adam Engst noted, “[I]t’s nearly impossible to identify a particular app when they’re all clear or tinted squircles, as you can see below. My brain just shuts down when it sees them.”

Also, that's true for a lot of normal application icons. Any Google application, including of course Chrome, but also Slack, Apple Photos, etc ... they all decided to use a "abstract red green yellow blue" logo on a white background. Of course, Google is the main culprit here. IntelliJ icons are another variant but still a pain to recognize and they add so much fun when they are mixed with Google ones.

And that's for the multicolor icons. Less problematic but still are "one color abstract on white background", like how am I supposed to distinguish Jira from Confluence ?

Also my personal bonus is that I have slimmed down high reflective glasses which creates chromatic aberrations so all those multicolor icons are dismantled when they are in my peripheral vision.

Good catch. I have the Miyoo Mini+ and that's exactly my feeling : it's not good, it _happen_ to be good because somehow, they made it the good form factor and especially, they put a 640x480 screen which allows you to play most retro consoles at native resolution or at integer (x2) scaling.

And the firmware is shitty but the community firmware is good.

And when you follow what the company does, you understand that the biggest selling point (the screen) is just there for reasons that are totally unrelated to creating a great product. It happened to be there because they randomly (economically, I guess) choose this screen and it happened to be good and have the right resolution for retro gaming.

None of their previous models had this advantage but more than that, none of the models that followed kept the advantages that made this device a banger.

For the xteink, I wouldn't be surprised for the next ones to be shittier, closed, and bloated, and probably for no reason.

In France, shutters aren't like most American ones, here we mostly use either plain wood with no gap for light (old houses) or for most of the recent houses, we use rolling shutters that let 0% of light (and therefore, 0% of radiative energy from the sun) get to the window and will make the room entirely black. Also, most modern rolling shutters are white by default so they are pretty reflective.

In the current situation, it's the air temperature that fuck us by not getting down at night and so our (concrete) buildings accumulate the heat even at night.

I mean, I'm currently in France, with 30°C (86°F) in my bedroom, do you really think that our shutters are opened ? At some point, sunlight is not even the issue. For the night to come, like the previous night, predictions are that we will have 35°C (95F) at midnight. I'm not even sure it was this hot when I was at Las Vegas eleven years ago. Las Vegas which is in the middle a of desert.

We are way past the awnings and we already have shutters and both of them are useless when the air itself is like a air dryer.
