please god do not. japan is already chock full of tourists. please don't overrun one of the most sacred places in japan. kyoto’s most important shrines and temples have become basically a theme park packed with tourists and locals barely visit anymore. just leave Ise alone.

its an IME bug and software is ripe with them. you need to do a check to see if the user “isComposing” (i think is the function). because enter is used in IME to pick characters based on input. its the same with japanese and chinese. whole slew of US based SaaS products never deal with it and it makes input unbearable for these languages.

The misunderstanding is that people equate what these companies are saying and what they are doing. In reality this is the perfect time to fire people under cover. Strange how many people are comparing code to art. Software engineering has never been about the code written, it’s about solving problems with software. With AI we can solve more problems with software. I have been writing code for 25 years, I love using AI. It allows me to get to the point faster.

The author is right, eliminating all this framework cruft will be a boon for building great software. I was a skeptic but it seems obvious now its largely going to be an improvement.

I ran linux for 15 years on a range of different machines. Desktop the most successfully. For laptops I tried everything but once I switched to a mac I’ve never gone back. The hardware is at least twice as good as any other laptop.

I’ve seen framework getting a lot of mind share recently. Especially with DHH singing their praises. I have come to loathe apple software over the years but can’t get over terrible build quality.

I thought framework was supposed to be the premium linux option but after reading this it looks same quality as all those windows turned linux machines.

Depressing how many comments are supporting this practice. The point is tests are supposed to be hard and fair. Everyone gets the same amount of time, same preparation for a presentation. Then you are judged based on your ability, preparation and skill. Pressure leads to growth, competition to effort. I hate this new world where we bend over backwards to make everything “fair”.

I guess I’m so old that I remember time without autocomplete. Where programmers just knew what functions existed and how to use them. Usually by looking them up in a manual and then -gasp- remembering them. Languages shouldn’t be optimized for laziness or not using your brain.

Rails (and possibly Django and Laravel) are just light-years ahead of any other stack for building web apps. They have dealt with all the tedium, know all the requirements, and actually get out of your face when building an application. I have been developing web apps for 15 years now.

I have tried Meteor (back in the day), Remix, Nextjs, Node w/ Express, etc. Always talking about how much better they are. But in my mind web dev is a solved problem. The js stuff is mainly just developers wanking off, driven by a bunch of dollars from big companies.

Systems stuff, deployment infra, etc. is great for stuff like Rust & Go, but shoehorning into web dev makes no sense. I would love to just move on from this debate but it seems thats going to never be possible.

Cant stand the infantilization of software tools. People can choose for themselves what features to use or not use. Doesnt need to be determined by our keepers. Also do Python maintainers just hate backwards compat as some sort of religion?

As an aside its really interesting how the human brain can so easily read an AI essay and realize its AI. You would think that with the vast corpus these models were trained on there would be a more human sounding voice.

Maybe it's overfitting or maybe just the way models work under the hood but any time I see AI written stuff on twitter, reddit, linkedin its so obvious its almost disgusting.

I guess its just the brain being good at pattern matching, but it's crazy how fast we have adapted to recognize this.

Looks interesting. Definitely nailing the old myspace aesthetic. I’d be more curious about active users versus registered users. Social networks are usually defined by activity. Unfortunately registered users probably contains a lot of bots and spammers.

Author makes good points but suffers from “i am genius and you are an idiot” syndrome which makes it seem mostly the ranting of an asshole vs a coherent article about the state of AI.

Shutting down without trying to spook their investors or current portfolio companies. Couching it as taking a break seems clever but I’m guessing any seasoned investors will read between the lines and see that this isn’t working.

The problem with thinking everyone else is wrong (ie how VCs operate) is that usually it turns out they are not. I’m guessing it wasn’t the story telling prowess of lack of deep connections (the common scapegoat for failing) but rather an unappealing offer for investors. Huge risks need huge returns. Bootstrapped companies may be slightly less risky but definitely less upside for investors. If there is no huge payday then investors know that capital will be used better elsewhere.

Im not hating on the thesis. Personally I like bootstrapped businesses much better but there is a reason they don’t attract investors.

Not sure why he thinks he is in the right here? I would be pissed too if an intern left and then made a website that was just copying the internal work. I love how he says with a straight face that he didnt use any of the code from replit when obviously as an intern he saw all the ideas and constructs. Its not like he had a mind wipe.

I’m in a small minority on this site I’m sure but professionalism is important and this screams immaturity.

God the entitlement of academia is insane. Living life in an environment where every next step is somehow a given breeds such a strange culture of childishness. Almost spent my whole life in it, so glad I got out. People hate on the private sector but at least it feels connected to reality on a much more basic level.
