You're going to be successful no matter which road you choose. You have skills people value that you can always use. Not knowing more about the details, I say go with the new opportunity with the guy that seems to want to work with you. Who do you want to spend the next x number of years with?

Information technology can absolutely save lives - I'd argue that a developer building medical software can save more lives than a PhD working on a treatment for cancer. The subtle killer these days are all the extra days a patient spends in the hospital. An extra day or two is what leads to complications. Work on solving the inefficiencies of inpatient medicine (documentation, communication, decision making, ect.) and you can go home at night knowing you are literally saving lives with your programming skills.

My favorite part is the "I am a new user" button - very slick!

It would be cool to somehow use a digital scale to track supplies. Each time you weigh a reagent, the scale could enter the amount used into Quartzy.

Come to think of it, using NFC might work really well for logging supplies. Stick a NFC sticker (I bet tagstand would hook you up) on items you want to track.

Yeah it might be tricky to sell equipment, although maybe between labs at the same institution might work. An interesting alternative might be "AirBnb" for lab equipment - renting out the unused time.

Quartzy should look into helping labs sell used lab equipment. It's hard to find a lab that doesn't have some good, functioning lab equipment that is no longer being used. They could set up an exchange that allows the trade or sale of equipment to other labs.

I bet this would work amazing if you had a celebrity or two at the event. You could also attach prizes to various seats to get some bidding wars.

What if you let users sign up and use the site for 1 month free? They would be more invested in the site after a month and be more likely to part with some money. I would guess that you would make more money with one month free + 5 dollars for the rest of the year vs 5 dollars up front.

I really like the dropbox model of subscriptions. I would never had paid money when I signed up for dropbox, but now I'm right at my free limit. They have me in a win/win for them - I either pay to increase my storage or refer friends. For 365.io I think users would really get the concept after they see their "free" 30 pictures.

Well I wish you good luck. Be sure to weigh the pros/cons of each career path that can get you to similar goals - MD vs PhD vs NP/PA. Is there a particular field of medicine that interests you the most?
