Very similar to what I have done. It's very powerful to have a lot of notes in one system like Evernote. Mine goes back to 2006. Likewise, I don't use it for document collaboration or any of the sharing functions – just personal notes synced.

Nowadays I create one note per day. I feel like I take a lot of notes – 500-4,000 words a day.

What balloons the size is I often find myself more in a transcription mode when I'm having critical conversations or interviewing people. Remote work makes this easier.

I've also developed a small number of short-hand annotations. eg. "(" for my inline thoughts, "[" for questions or topics I want to get to in a meeting.

This isn’t a documentary about hi-if equipment. It’s a story about this man’s obsession. The sacrifices and guilt now realized. Nearing the end of his life with a terminal illness — it’s the reflection at the end that causes pause. How are your obsessions impacting you? Are they tearing you away from your family or friends? Are you happy with those choices made?

I can't +1 one this comment enough.

Both have track records in office and the choice can't be more clear. I'm shocked that anyone is supporting Peskin after his term of obstructionism. Esp. in contrast to what Christinsen has accomplished in her recent term.

I had the fortune of getting wrapped up in the Chico yoyo scene of the late 90's. It was amazing to see the transformation around that time. There were only one or two metal, ball berring yoyos on the market at the time. Got to help teach kids and was enlisted by Prima (game guide publisher) to do a book on yoyo play too. Good times...

I wholeheartedly disagree. A much more important factor is how ready you are and what kind of support structure you have to start out with. If that is later in a career (and when you have a family) so be it. It's the right time.

Founded current company with two young kids and just had a third. Pulling together the right team way more of a factor than having a family.

I have a good feeling that there will be some text as well. :) FWIW we imagine that field replacements will be less common and simply run with 'dead drives' will be more common.

Incidentally, because the drive is moving to a key/value model vs. sectors it means that the useful life of the device will be much better. This is because the device can manage bad sectors itself vs having that be the responsibility of the filesystem. So the drive would just report lower % capacity.

This is a good thing for a couple of reasons. First it allows equipment manufacturers to build chassis with the same drive trays that are already in production. Second, it that from a drive assembly standpoint, the same build and testing equipment can be used. This should speed development and manufacturing quality.

Is the concern more from an ergonomic perspective, that someone in a data center may plug in a drive into the wrong system?

I'm biased here -- but I see OpenStack Swift coming out as a winner out of all of this. It's an object storage system that can span multiple cloud orchestration frameworks.

I actually did credit card arbitrage in one of my first startups. We discovered a niche market where online credit card transactions were charged exorbitant rates for low-volume, non-swipe monthly subscriptions. By taking on the risk ourselves we aggregated many smaller sites, and was able to become a merchant bank ourselves.

That's arbitrage to me.

I would still recommend it, even to those who know how to program. A lot of the book is just non-stop typing as fast as you can. The benefit to me was how it improved my 'muscle memory' when actually sitting down to write something on my own. There was less stumbling over little things like -- "how do import a library again? 'require?' 'load?'"

As with most things, you get out of it what you put into it. For example, I wrote unit tests in one of the 'extra credit' assignments to explain a bunch of python's symbols.

(I'm going to have some bias here as I've done Swift deployments as well.)

One of the advantages of using something like Swift for long-term storage is it's simplicity of how data is stored on disk. Data isn't chunked up and distributed throughout a cluster. Each replica is whole and on disk. And, as notmyname, mentions there are auditors that continuously run to check for bitrot and to ensure replicas are in place. The data is extremely durable in a swift cluster if you deploy and configure everything right.

I've done most of my price modeling for petabyte-scale deployments, but it actually has good scaling-down properties as well. If you're concerned about power, 2.5" drives may be an option. Although I would avoid 'green' drives as Swift tends to keep the drives quite active (replica and integrity checks) and you won't see much benefit.

I was involved in that community for a few years. (As part of my job -- the business side it Agile.) Ultimately, I got tired of the politics of ideas, organization and labels.

What is still fun for me is trying out experiments, learning from them. Reading about others trials in how to organize teams, programming practices and deliver as much value as possible. Keeping track of elephants like these was distracting.

This is Yehuda's m.o. -- take a framework and make it less monolithic before he extends functionality. He's done this with Merb and Rails. These have greatly improved those frameworks. I expect good things from Sproutcore.

I think there is a market for a lead generation product for niche hosting providers. Have a pay service that 'hunts' down high-traffic or newly-launched websites that fit the profile that they're looking for.

These types of apps are impossible to get done internally. But sales teams would gladly pay if t exists.

I've worked for start-ups in Silicon Valley and for a large Internet company in Bangalore. From what I observed, a large part of the missing element were skills for new product development. The culture of development is rooted in large-scale projects. Large plans. Big budgets. Huge teams. As such, the type of product development skills for the quick-iteration that is needed for startup development isn't typical practice.

About a year back I was contacted by a CEO of an Indian development house who couldn't find enough talent to build social-media applications. He was trying to figure out if he should outsource his projects to San Francisco or Manhattan.
