I donated $15/month for from mid-2022 to early-2023 to try Logseq Sync when it was in beta. I thought I'd support them while they got it over the finishline then pay for the feature. It's still in beta. What a joke.

Years ago, it was just called Google Apps and was for bringing your own domain. It was even advertised as something that would be good for family usage. And in the legacy GSuite migration debacle a couple years back, they acknowledged that there are legacy users that were/are using it for families and that it would continue to be free (after months of uncertainty).

Because it's their right to, and there's no good reason why they should be forced to open it up. It's all the little rights that add together to arrive at the vibrant ecosystem we have now. Apple had and still has the right to create a closed, but coherent ecosystem that consumers are willing to pay a (arguably small) premium to enter with the promise that the quality advertised is the quality received. Taking away that choice from those consumers does not appear to gain back much in other ways. Would Android users be happier? Yes. But there's no evidence that Apple users would be better off _in the long term_. In the short term, both sides might be happier, but that would be shortsighted thinking. It would be removing a reason for Apple to develop future first-party apps that serve as a counterweight to apps owned by corporations interested in selling ad space.

There's also no evidence that iMessage is anti-competitive and a true lock-in experience. People talk about network effects, but iMessage is only a significant messaging app in one country in the entire world. The rest of the world uses a mix of other apps. This is true even in Japan, where iPhones are popular. If people want to use another app, they can. Let the people choose.

I knew you'd show up and say this. CIQ's CEO claims to have founded Rocky and is the current president of RESF, is Rocky's most prominent sponsor, and Rocky's recent moves have been in the same direction that CIQ requires in order to survive. Regardless of direct control or not, Rocky's financial incentives align with CIQ's.

There is a huge, huge difference between the debt you take on in undergrad vs grad programs vs law school vs medical school, etc. You are looking at the numbers for the most expensive programs (that also result in some of the highest paying careers!) to make the case that people have high debt, but those are the minority. They also tend to be the most educated and have the highest future earnings potential. Most people do not advance past an undergraduate degree. The 28k number is far more relevant, and within the article you linked.

The Netflix Windows app and my 4K monitor at 125% do not work together. The UI elements are tiny and the padding is wrong.

Joplin does not encrypt notes at rest. Only data being synced is encrypted; when it gets to its destination it’s available unencrypted in an SQLite database. Any program running on your computer can read your Joplin notes at any time. The developer has come out against implementing encryption-at-rest many times throughout the years. Their suggestion is that you use another form of encryption, like veracrypt. Notably, this makes using Joplin with encryption-at-rest impossible on iOS.

If you're referring to the lack of a hardware kill switch, that's true for 99.9% of Androids too.

If you're referring to the temporary WiFi off toggle in the Control Center, the reasoning is that most people don't remember they turned off WiFi (my parents for example) and won't remember to turn it back on. But you absolutely can disable it by going into the Settings app.

At a 10x difference, it should clue you in that something is wrong. Choice quotes from a UK Gov page:

Swipe from the very edge of the screen, and it takes you "up" (or "out", however you want to term it) a page.

So if you've selected a photo, a swipe down dismisses the photo. From there, a swipe in from the very edge of the screen brings you out of the current album and back to viewing all albums.

Initially, this behavior may seem weird to some from outside the iOS ecosystem? But dismissing photos by pulling down seems to be common UX with modern apps. And swiping from the side feels so natural, that apps that don't implement it (10%?) are jarring. It could be said that a weakness here is that Apple does not enforce universal usage, but most apps have implemented it well. When it does work (90%?), my thumb appreciates not having to reach the bottom left of the phone.

It is a bad title. The inclusion of "ignoring Amazon" implies that the difference between the using AWS and not using AWS is $2B. Otherwise, it makes as much sense to title it "Bank of America saved $2B per year ignoring shark attacks, building own cloud".

I sold my Seagate stock a while back, so I have no horse in this race, but I needed to point out that _outside the notoriously bad 3tb line that one year_, Seagate’s reliability has been on par or better than Western Digital’s in every single Backblaze report I have ever read. I challenge you to prove to me that the Backblaze data says Seagate is worse than WD outside of that line.

A friend asked me to watch a clip of Ben Shapiro so we could sincerely talk about what the other side believes. I forgot that I was on a fresh OS install, not yet logged in. Well, right after that one video, every single recommended video to me became a "Ben Shapiro SLAMS liberal...".

I get that YouTube had no other metric to gauge me by, by there are 10 or 12 recommendations and there's no law that says YouTube can't ease into recommendations. Whether you're for or against Shapiro, this kind of behavior induces people into bubbles and radicalizing in the feedback loop.

As I understand it, if the cash is repatriated, the income is taxed at US corporate tax rates minus what they've already paid to a foreign government. So essentially they would be paying an amount equivalent to the US corporate tax. Framing it as "foreign and US corporate tax" is misleading.
