Brother, I live in Austin. It's 40C outside and my kids are very young.

We do have bike paths over that routes but it's just not safe for my kids yet. The road they need to bike along allows up to 65mph.

In the Netherlands I just had to cross a 30km/h road (down to 20km during school hours and pedestrians always get first preference) to drop them. Netherlands is just too satisfactorily safe ♥

You're right. One of my friends in the Netherlands does has a 3 hour total commute over the day. It's insane.

I can squeeze up to 40mpg on interstate if I drive slow (under 65mph) and it's typically about 20-25mpg within the city but the ride for School specifically, I'm not sure what's going on there.

Maybe its not truly 1 full gallon so not 12mpg but a little over that like ~18mpg.

Friend works for Google vendor who generates data for training. His team alone is 200 people (in US).

He says there are many similar vendors and teams with thousands of people in India and other countries.

It's cheap but you also travel a lot in the US. Specially in the southern states because everything is so far.

Anecdotal reference, my children's school is roughly 3 miles, so I spend a gallon of gas every day with 2 round-trips.

That number was zero in Netherlands because all schools are either walkable or bike able.

Supermarkets and restaurants are 5 miles away easily.

Heck, my neighbor (door to door) is 0.4 miles.

Just to add context those are just dumb lamps and I acknowledge that the product here has a lot more features including IoT support and the ability to change Hue.

For someone who has no idea about light engineering or electronics if I stack two 25k Lm lamps next to each other does it make 50k Lm light?

I recently changed my car's headlamps to Chinese LED which claims to be about 37kLm and I don't know how much it is probably less than that.

Two of those lamps costee me around $24 on Amazon US (pretty sure under $10 in China).

What sparked my curiosity is while I'm writing code even a small mistake in the most simple programs can cost me tens or hundreds of milliseconds whereas behind a simple flushing to disk command there is so much happening at so many layers all in sub-millisecond or at most in a couple of seconds.

For anyone in the same boat as my self, I later found out that this is actually very easy to achieve (thanks to ChatGPT). Theoretically, this is how it is done

1. Encode faces, there is a library called face_recognition, that can grab faces from pictures and encode them 2. Group the faces data using `pairwise_distances(encodings, metric='euclidean')`, you only need sklearn library for this

I wholeheatedly agree with you. The GMaps experience is vastly superior. Additionally, when I'm referring to Gmaps, I think one of the critical features that I would love to replace with Open Source is Places. With due respect, I find both Google and Yelp a*holes in this area. While OpenStreetMap is really good for mapping, I'm still looking to find(or create) somethign that can supplement OSM with Places/Business data.

YouTube in India is in the government's pocket. If you have a channel that speaks against the government you are automatically pushed down in the search results, notification of your new videos suppressed for your subscribers etc.

And if you somehow manage to still gather enough Indian audience and you're doing sufficient damage then they block you in India entirely.

With so much AI generated spam being pushed on the web I think this is where we are headed towards in a couple of months/years.

Let's start with replacing Google. Count me in.

While DDG, Brave, Kagi etc are working generously to replace Google search. The other areas that I think get less attention and needs to be targeted to successfully dismantle them and their predatory practices are Google maps and Google docs.

Maps are hard because it requires a lot of resources and money and whatever but replacing docs should be relatively easier.
