I have no love for SpaceX but at least I can take a subscription or invest and the stock and pretend that those satellites are beneficial to me.

What GP meant is that the CTO of a $1b company wold absolutely not fire someone for going Azure because at those scale it's very likely they have a set of customers that exclusively want to work on Azure, so that choice makes sense.

It's easy to do blanket statements like "never choose azure", "avoid GCP at all cost" or "never again on AWS". Until real world comes your way and you are forced to deal with it.

That being said: I'd fire anyone choosing to deploy a workload on GCP.

They don't want you to have access to frontier models. And you will not have it. See Mythos as Exibit A.

"They" fully well know that they current frontier model are maybe 6 month ahead of what people will have access to without their control. See Deepseek as Exibit B

The reason you can't run these locally are more with the fact that those mythos sized models require extreme amount of memory and processing power to run at acceptable speeds. And neither you, nor I can afford to pay for those resources to run those models locally. A big reason is that "running locally" means running on your own hardware. And for almost everyone this means "running on hardware that will spent a big portion of its time just sleeping". Because data center and providers have higher utilization rates, they can easily outpace you. That and the fact that when they place an order it's usually for hundreds of thousands of units.

They said it was impossible for them to reverse the decision. Nothing has changed; they won’t be in charge of that. The state will.

A significant reason of the “impossibility” of reversing the decision is the regulations around nuclear. Take the problem of micro tears in the concrete. Engie could have maintained the concrete. Because the plant was scheduled for decommission, they did not. So there will be small tears in the concrete. The law does not allow those small tears. Repairing the concrete now is too expensive.

The plant will be owned by the state so now the state has two options: (1) invest a truckload of money to repair the concrete or (2) change the law to allow small tears which have virtually no security consequences anyway.

We all know that the state will choose option (2) but there would be far more opposition if they did so while the plant were owned by a private company that is making profit rather than owned by the state which is operating at a deficit.

The problem is that at that scale, the alternative is building your own data centers. You'd probably want at least 2 in the US, 2 in Europe, 2 in Asia, maybe 1 in Africa and 1 in LATAM. So 8-10, and you need at least half of them ready "on time."

What does "on time" mean? You'll need to negotiate with local authorities, some friendly, some not. Data centers aren't exactly popular neighbors these days. Then negotiate with the local power utility. Fingers crossed the political landscape doesn't shift and your CEO doesn't sign a contract with an army using your product to pick bombing targets, because you'll watch those permits evaporate fast.

Then there's sourcing: CPUs, GPUs, memory, networking. You need all of it. Did you know the lead time for an industrial power transformer is 5+ years? Don't get me started on the water treatment pumps and filters you can't even get permitted without. What will you do in the meantime ? You surely aren't gonna get preferential treatment from AWS / Google / ... if they know you are moving away anyway. Your competition will.

The risk and complexity are just too big. AI/LLM is already an incredibly complex and brittle environment with huge competition. Getting distracted building data centers isn't enticing for these companies, it's a death sentence.

I have found out that the main phone providers (Apple, Google, Samsung) have extremely long support period. I really don't get the "planned obsolescence" thing.

As an example, in Jan 2026, Apple published iOS 12.5.8 which provides updates for iPhone 5s which released in Sept 2013. That's 12.5 years ago. The equivalent would be to connect to the internet using ADSL in Jan 2000 with your IBM PS/2 rocking in intel 8086, 512 kb of RAM and expecting an update for your DOS operating system.

How do you handle SSL pinning ? Most of the apps I interact with have some sort of SSL pinning, which is the hard part to circumvent. I tried Kampala but got stuck at the usual place; as soon as I enable it, chatGPT stops working. Most of my iPhone apps stop responding etc.

I am not sure who exactly is that one person ? Is it Altman, who is according to many people not that knowledgeable in AI in the first place; the scientist who found a breakthrough (who is it ?); is it the president of the United States who is greenlighting the strikes; the general who is choosing the target (based on AI suggestions); the missile designer; the manufacturer; the pilot who flew the plane ?

I get the point of concentrating power in fewer hands, but the whole "all the problems of this world are caused by an extremely narrow set of individuals" always irks me. Going as far as saying there is just one is even mor ludicrous.

You can already do that today by hiring a security researcher. I can guarantee you that Apple has access to people of a higher caliber than my startup.

I could see a world where 1 year from now I can have glassing do a full sweep of my codebase for a given price (say: $10k). Running that once a year is within my means and would make my software much more secure than it is today.

Sometimes I want the extra paragraph, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I like the suggested follow up, sometimes I don't. Sometimes I have half an hour in front of me to keep digging into a subject, sometimes I don't.

So human become just a provider of those 6 digits code ? That’s already the main problem i have with most agents: I want them to perform a very easy task: « fetch all recepts from website x,y and z and upload them to the correct expense of my expense tracking tool ». Ai are perfectly capable of performing this. But because every website requires sso + 2 fa, without any possibility to remove this, so i effectively have to watch them do it and my whole existence can be summarized as: « look at your phone and input the 6 digits ».

The thing i want ai to be able to do on my behalf is manage those 2fa steps; not add some.

Thinking through those problems is like training a muscle, and that muscle stays useful even as the underlying technology evolves.

I’m not sure destroying other people’s property is the best way to make them sympathetic to your cause.

I don’t own a Ring camera (or any similar device), but the idea that someone could spend time unnoticed on my porch, messing with my stuff, right where my daughter likes to play on weekends, makes my skin crawl.

If that happened to me, I’d probably just double down on security to be honest. Knowing that some people actually feel it's the right thing to do makes me wonder if I shouldn't start today.

To be clear, I have no issue with someone peacefully informing people in their neighborhood about the potential dire consequences of enabling "share images of my doorbell with the government or other private agencies", that's all fine to me. But if you feel the need to impose your views by harassing me about it or by breaking the law to get your point across, you won't get an ally in me.

It’s not that nobody cared, it’s that the cost of building and maintaining CLIs, relative to the usage they got, often didn’t make economic sense. In fact, this is the first time I’ve seen someone want to use Slack via a CLI, not a TUI, an actual CLI. APIs, on the other hand, had plenty of real usage and made business sense, so most services offered them.

With AI, two things have changed: (1) the cost of building a CLI on top of a documented API has dropped a lot, and (2) there’s a belief that “designed for agents” CLIs will enable new kinds of usage that weren’t practical before and that will move the needle on the bottom line.

There are plenty of “chill and peaceful” city and town builders that trade realism for prettier, more idealized places.

In more simulation-focused games, cycling and walking paths are often available, and you can use them, but they come with many of the same constraints they face in the real world. In practice, that means they are usually not efficient as the primary way to move large numbers of people across a large city.

Reading your comment, it sounds like you want a game that is realistic in most respects, but treats transportation differently, in a way that makes your preferred options the optimal strategy. That is going to be hard to find, since transportation is a core part of city-building sims, and developers tend to pick either realism or a more utopian/fantasy model rather than mixing both in a single game.

I’m curious what’s behind the speed improvements. It seems unlikely it’s just prioritization, so what else is changing? Is it new hardware (à la Groq or Cerebras)? That seems plausible, especially since it isn’t available on some cloud providers.

Also wondering whether we’ll soon see separate “speed” vs “cleverness” pricing on other LLM providers too.

The idea is that, over time, the quality and accuracy of world-model outputs will improve. That, in turn, lets autonomous driving systems train on a large amount of “realistic enough” synthetic data.

For example, we know from experience that Waymo is currently good enough to drive in San Francisco. We don’t yet trust it in more complex environments like dense European cities or Southeast Asian “hell roads.” Running the stack against world models can give a big head start in understanding what works, and which situations are harder, without putting any humans in harm’s way.

We don’t need perfect accuracy from the world model to get real value. And, as usual, the more we use and validate these models, the more we can improve them; creating a virtuous cycle.

A significant portion of engineering time is now spent ensuring that yes, the LLM does know about all of that. This context can be surfaced through skills, MCP, connectors, RAG over your tools, etc. Companies are also starting to reshape their entire processes to ensure this information can be properly and accurately surfaced. Most are still far from completing that transformation, but progress tends to happen slowly, then all at once.

Maybe a dumb question on my side; but if you are using a GUI like emdash with Claude Code, are you getting the full claude code harness under the hood or are you "just" leveraging the model ?

The initial software Pump and Dump event could be considered when Cursor burned through millions of dollars to build a barely working browser. Naturally there was no way to finish such a monstrous heap of software into a working product and why would anybody use a vibe coded browser anyway? The "dump" on their end was to use this as marketing bait and a way to inflate their valuation.

Let me introduce you to the wonderful world of "research." It's what happens when you're willing to spend money on things without immediate, obvious ROI. The real value often comes not from the resulting product, but from the lessons learned along the way. I also don't see what's wrong with showcasing the results of your experiments. How many developers have implemented a toy ray tracer and put it on their personal GitHub? No one in their right mind believes Pixar will use it for their next renderer, but should we conclude those people are inflating their CVs with bait? Or can we acknowledge it's a cool project to undertake, and pulling it off requires real skill? If individuals are welcome to do this, why can't organizations? I want to see more "we did a fun thing, here are the results." There's a playfulness in that approach I find refreshing. Just because it comes from a for-profit company doesn't make it cynical.

If it's that easy to not need the banners, I'd expect EU websites themselves to lead the "no cookies needed" movement.

Yet https://european-union.europa.eu displays a cookie banner for tracking on what is essentially a static informational site. If the EU itself feels tracking is valuable enough to warrant the banner on their own pages, it's hard to fault businesses (whose survival actually depends on understanding their audience) for making the same choice.

At least they're compliant with their own regulation, I suppose.

A key difference is that the cost to execute a cab ride largely stayed the same. Gas to get you from point A to point B is ~$5, and there's a floor on what you can pay the driver. If your ride costs $8 today, you know that's unsustainable; it'll eventually climb to $10 or $12.

But inference costs are dropping dramatically over time, and that trend shows no signs of slowing. So even if a task costs $8 today thanks to VC subsidies, I can be reasonably confident that the same task will cost $8 or less without subsidies in the not-too-distant future.

Of course, by then we'll have much more capable models. So if you want SOTA, you might see the jump to $10-12. But that's a different value proposition entirely: you're getting significantly more for your money, not just paying more for the same thing.
