I agree. Reading through this seems like a long winded way of putting off telling some random person on LinkedIn to bugger off. If there’s a supposed licensing issue, send a legal letter, not a LinkedIn message. Big waste of time for everyone involved

Oroborus issues were seen from 100k miles away. LLMs were bound to run into issues immediately based on training data. If I weren’t substantially poor I’d put all my savings into puts of LL ‘S like ChatGPT, and others. I cannot risk burning substantials of my own time to offset the burnage those themselves are creating.

And for a large portion of their routes are already overpriced and less convenient than almost any other means of travel (except for a handful of actually reasonably-priced routes. A local route on Amtrak costs almost $100 for a one way ticket traveling <200mi A bus ticket for the same route is $30. The bus takes an hour longer. I want amtrak to thrive, but they need to attract customers, not drive more away with higher prices.

Yeah, I’ve noticed this recently. As I spend more time with my current friend group in the new city I live in, the worse I feel because it seems like we’re just surface level friends, whereas when I spend time with my friends back home it greatly lifts my spirits because it’s a genuine connection.

It’s a an extremely odd feeling because from the outside I’m sure it looks like I have a great social life and good friends, but I’ve never felt more alone in my life. And I’m not sure how to address this conundrum, on one hand I want a stronger friendship with this new group of friends and don’t want to be alone, but at the same time it seems as if I would be happier if I disconnected myself from the group and was actually alone.

I don’t agree with their, or any company’s search for a second money printing machine. I don’t think companies should strive for parabolic growth, it is inherently unsustainable in almost ever imaginable facet, but that is what the market seems to want/expect, which then drives companies to their own downfall and they desperately try to cling onto the same growth they’ve seen in previous years.

Greed is the ultimate killer of innovation and sustainable business practices. But the board/c-suite doesn’t care unless it’s the one holding the bag at the end.

Promotions being highly dependent on shipping new products rather than long term support of existing products. You don’t climb that type-a ladder by improving the code of the 30th chat app.

Their desperate desire to find another money printing machine to replace their soon to be regulated to death ads monopoly. If it’s not instantly printing money, they don’t want to continue to support it.

Ruth and Sundar need to be fired or else Google/Alphabet will suffer the same exact fate as every other company that focuses on cost cutting over innovation and supporting future innovations.

Until it’s standard practice by all companies to protect up under the guise of consumer protection with all closed sourced software.

I think it’s mainly because Pichai has the title of CEO and the real CEO is their CFO, Ruth Porat.

Considering more people are reading these headlines than experiencing a round of google freebies for their shutdown, this is only going to work to limit consumer buy-in on whatever google decides it needs to do next.

Google is panically trying to find another unicorn, as it knows its current cash cow, ads, is holding almost all its eggs and could be facing its demise as online regulation only continues to strengthen.

Not to mention google’s perverse promotional incentives that ignore supporting products long term, focusing on launching new things instead.

Google, as it is right now, is a dying company. They need basically a complete overhaul, starting with firing the entire C-level, especially the true CEO, Ruth Porat.

It's funny because I went to school for computer science, I grew up doing graphic design, and have a lot of experience having done a lot of work in both departments, but never a strict UI/UX role. When I tried to apply for UI/UX positions I either never heard back, or was told time and time again that I was lacking specific UI/UX experience.

Thought it was always funny, I guess hiring managers don't see the overlap the same way I do.

I think the move wasn’t following fads. In the mid 1900s there was ample evidence pointing at sugar being the culprit for rising obesity rates and other weight-related aliments, but there was a large push from industry to willfully ignore that and label fats as the bad guy. As a result consumers wanted low-fat foods and “healthier” alternatives to traditional fats.

Maybe they could pivot and turn it into another chat app?

I think it’s okay to point out when conditions are rough even if you’re getting paid to do the thing you wanted to do.

I walked past a film set in my city and I happened to be wearing mostly black and a black ball cap and I was asked where a piece of equipment was when I was just walking by.

Film crews are large, typically not one continuous unit, ie there’s always new people on set so seeing a new face isn’t uncommon. They’re also extremely busy and overworked so it doesn’t take much at all to blend in. Even if you just happen to be walking by with no intentions of trying to work your way onto a set.

I’m not a felon but get so upset at our current system that tries to pretend to care about people with records but in actuality leaves them to rot.

I’m a business owner and my first employee and current operations manager is a felon. I knew this prior as I worked with him before, before starting my own business. He ended up in that position and doing 3 years of prison because America for a lot of people sucks. It sucked for him and he was in a position where it was either do felonious things or be homeless. So he made an obvious choice.

He’s struggled with work since then, because as soon as they see felon they tend to disregard him. It sucks. I know his case isn’t standard, but it also isn’t rare. Society treats these people like lepers and I hope the tides change on this, or we get actual criminal reform. Because what we’ve got right now OP’s business should have went under because it wasn’t needed anymore. But that’s not the case.

I’m not disappointed, I’m amazed. Amazed that over the course of several billion years these inanimate particles and structures have progressed to such a point that we can even ponder them and express our disappointment in them.

I’m all about DIY, my thought process when buying something usually goes like so:

“Huh, this is pretty pricy, I bet I could make that” and about 50% of the time I actually make it, the other 50% I find it on sale and buy it then…

But just because I can make things doesn’t mean I can’t appreciate someone else’s work. I can paint, but I still buy artwork from other artists.

Sometimes it’s just about appreciating other people’s work.

I didn’t mean my initial comment to be overly negative, though, reading back through it I can see how it can be. I was born in 1995. I wasn’t aware of the internet until much beyond that time, so I greatly appreciate posts like this, despite being held back by modern standards and modern search engines.

I’m a designer at heart. I absolutely adore old internatage, the weirdness and frustration upon finding this post were within context. This all is so old to modern-day life that having to work through examining and processing it is a task within itself, and an enjoyable at that. Especially if anyone else is like me and only uses their phone during the weekends to read hackernews!

I got a lot of enjoyment going through the archive webpage links as they are on a phone, but come Monday, it’ll definitely be the first thing I peruse :)

This was one of the most surreal and irritating posts I’ve ever come across on hacker news.

Had I just read the broken html archive site further I would have seen I could enter the gallery without being on desktop. Through two redirects and an alert, mind you. Only to find that any of the tutorial links don’t load images, or require you to download an .exe
