Seems like a generally good idea, the satellites already need to use star trackers, they need an almanac of what should be there so deviations need to be tracked.

I can entirely see the military perspective though, this is almost a direct challenge for any adversary that any maneuver you perform, we will know about it.

That could very well be what the quantum uncertainty principal is, floating point non deterministic errors. It also could just be drawing comparisons among different problem domains.

The Parker solar probe gets much closer than the solar orbiter, 0.046 AU vs 0.28 AU respectively. The successive Venus flybys are to drop it increasingly further into the sun's orbit to take solar atmospheric data on quick flybys while the Solar orbiter is more for spectrograph measurements of the sun's corona, just different mission sets.

But think about the corollary where places like McMasterCarr have exact products in known quantities, types and breakdowns because they used to be a catalogue. I will go to McMaster 9/10 times because it's just easy to find exactly what I want and so they get my money.

Amazon seems hostile to this very idea, that I know what I want, will spend 15% more to have it tomorrow and will not by the random stuff it smashes in the search results because I know what I want.

Default to speed and then the first time a device has crashed "your battery has worn to a level that we will have to start slowing down your device or it will keep crashing, will you accept these crashes or slow your device?"

That would be transparent and also allow decisions, if AppleCare also allowed for free battery replacement after receiving that message it would be a PR boon, not a kerfuffle.

Not to mention that most retirement accounts have yearly maximums, if you where making 401k for 10 years at 100k you will have significantly lower effective taxes than a person who made nothing and then sees high earnings trying to put into retirement.

This is on some android phones, double tapping power will open the camera. I use it all the time to take pictures of information that I don't want to write down, package numbers, measurements, error logs, all just tap tap, point, volume down.

HDPE is very stiff, MDPE is kinda stiff and LDPE is flimsy. Same monomer just cross linked differently with a different production process. Plastic is chemistry magic.

They are the dominant players for sure. I think the biggest reason is that they do everything mostly the same, there is no reason to talk about how deep trench was done independently if Intel did it 10 years before. Or that x technology allows for higher performance. It's all not important to the product offerings and hype train.

There is a comradery in that it sucks, you know it sucks and that we are just getting through it. No one is out to "get" you. You are also part of the suck club.

The second you get another job they are reminded of all the people who take advantage of people in the suck club. You got out. They didn't.

I have used a FLIR TG267 at work to find if parts are failing and while it's only 120x160 it works pretty well because it can overlay thermal coloration over a standard camera which really lets you use those pixels for temperature not identification.

This lets you know "ah this transistor is dead" instead of "what I am I even looking at".

I have been thinking about this quite intently lately, most things are inherently so complex that you by doing almost anything hit unknown unknowns, things that you don't know you don't know. But you don't need to know. You don't need to know what metallurgical structure a knife is in. It's just a knife.

I think the ability to make something that requires less domain knowledge to use than to make it is in fact the primary thing that moves us along as a species. And that the complexity that we hit when things go wrong is just the manifestation is the principal "there is a long was down to the bottom".

I was at first super confused by this comment, because cross play has been a thing for at least a year or two without YouTube premium. You just have to enable YouTube history and it will populate across devices. I know a lot of people disabled YouTube history because it tailors the experience but it's a fair tradeoff for continuity.

This is where buying "professional grade" does often save you. I have seen tons of Dell Latitudes and Lenovo Thinkpads that look like a black brick but are still going 5+ years later. They actually invested in thermals and it shows. (Written on a 7 year old Thinkpad).

Anecdotally I see this transition to higher production yield per person happening in real time, we are closing down some old factories and trying to re-train people to work in the new one being built in its place and it's very hard.

A significant number of floor staff only have highschool degrees and are being speedrun through an associate's to stay with the company on a higher staff grade. Others are doing months of on the job training to be brought up to the level that they can still be employed. I know some just can't hack it and are quietly being let go.

I know we are already asking our youth to mortgage their lives to get higher education, but what about a 50 year old woman who has been working for 30 years and still has 15 to go, but their job is completely gone? Do we send them back to college? This is already happening en mass in Japan, elderly are working entry level jobs because their old jobs are replaced. I think the college and retraining argument are only going to become more entwined in the next 20 years.

A kilo of aluminum contains about 55 kw/h of embodied energy, I like to think of aluminum smelting as pretty much the direct conversion of electricity to metal.

That means that each MW/hr of production only makes 18 kg/hr, so a 900MW/hr nuclear plant only makes 8 tons of aluminum a hour. Its insane.

A serious improvement on these budget phones is turning animations completely off, it removed most of the stuttering and GPU usage doesn't spike just pulling up the keyboard.

Easiest is probably using your house as a thermal battery and just temporarily dumping energy into cooling or heating down to a set temp and then when allowing your house to normalize when prices go up.

Alternatively, charge your own batteries and load balance. It's boring but effective.

You could have your computer queued to run high energy ops when free, queue training models, compiling, etc. Which would generate a lot of heat, thus cranking the AC.

I could see how this could easily 10x your power draw for a few thousand dollars and work in the background.

Altoids tins are pretty strong, small enough to be handy and cheap. This makes them the ideal container for a lot of small electronics projects, but a pi doesn't quite fit. I see it as a perfect small electronics container which you can pull out and use on the go.

For most shocks a little foam goes a long way, having the electronics be bolted to a cushioned box or having the electronics laying in foam (with appropriate cooling) helps a lot.
