Wrong. If all you wish for Christmas is to send some ETH, look no further than into ZK-Rollups such as zkSync & Loopring.

1) A transfer costs around $0.01 in fees.

2) ZK-Rollups are not sidechains. These are layer 2 solutions that settle on Ethereum with a novel trust model of 1-of-N: you only need to trust that a single node is honest!

3) Exchanges (such as Coinbase) would eventually support depositing/withdrawing to a rollup, which means most folks would never need to interact the expensive base layer directly.

Sending money across countries has never been cheaper, faster & as secure as it is now on an Ethereum ZK-Rollup.

examples that wouldn't be better served by a database are basically non-existent.

If you say so, then here's a question for you.

Using only non-blockchain databases, can you build an exchange that is..

  1) Owned by no one, or owned by a community to which anyone can join.

  2) Unstoppable. Can't be shutdown even if you cold murder the entire team.

  3) Can't be regulated (will never do KYC/AML).

  4) Permission-less: anyone can trade and/or provide the liquidity.

  5) Open-source with indisputable proof that it *always* runs *exactly* and *only* the code it shows on GitHub.
In other words, can you build Uniswap [1] with MySQL?

Ethereum's upcoming 2.0 release kinda solves the issues you raised there.

1. Energy waste: solved by staking instead of mining. See proof of stake [1].

2. Centralized mining: staking in Ethereum 2.0 should be possible with a Raspberry Pi 4, therefore the viability of joining the network isn't closely tied to your geographic location as it is with mining (mining is only profitable with cheap electricity & hardware, which is why China is dominating Bitcoin mining right now).

3. Facilitates crime: well, that's still a problem, but it's also a problem with other things that give anonymity. Is Tor detrimental to society? Is cash detrimental to society? Should we force everyone to stop transacting with cash since most crimes are done with it, and like China to force them to transact digitally where it can all be tracked by the government, banks and corporations?

4. No intrinsic value: you should check out what's going on with DeFi (decentralized finance) right now in the Ethereum world. Over $2B is locked into smart contracts, people aren't just HODLing anymore, they're playing. Sure, it's not used to save the planet just yet, but I definitely believe it will develop to be enormously beneficial to society. Would love to elaborate if you want.

5. Stability: solved with stablecoins. Basically, you transact with a token that keeps it's value stable against a real world currency. DAI is a good example of a USD stablecoin. This defeats the "ponzi scheme" argument as well, since you can interact with many smart contracts with a stablecoin instead of a cryptocurrency. Your choice. If you acquired a cryptocurrency (which is somewhat like a stock) instead of a stablecoin and lost money, it's your fault.

I really like your article, well said. The issues you've raised are still real and need to be discussed. Nevertheless, I argue that those issues can, and are, being solved...

At least 4 of these issues had no solution 10 years ago, but just like innovations (proof of stake, stablecoins) fix them, further innovations will slowly fix other unsolved issues as well.

Same. I love Go, the language, much more than PHP, but Laravel.. Laravel is really great.

I wish Go had something as convenient and complete as Laravel. Unfortunately that's impossible to achieve in a static language without polymorphism (generics) or metaprogramming.

I'm waiting for Go to introduce polymorphism and I'll be watching closely to see how 'post-generics' web frameworks make Go great again!

"String-programming" is mostly optional. Modern Laravel is introducing type-safe alternatives. For instance, instead of doing validation like:

  'gender' => 'in:male,female,other'
You can now do:
  'gender' => Rule::in(['male', 'female', 'other'])
Which, coming from Go, I very much prefer.

Modern PHP is pushing for type-safety (via type-hinting) and Laravel is following this direction as well.

On the other hand, if this comes back next winter, and we would have a mass-producible vaccine ready, then you could say science has saved us from a second pandemic.

One of Go's features is fast compilation, which wouldn't have been the case if it used LLVM.

I don't know where you got this impression, but it's absolutely wrong. Go's garbage collector is excellent. It has sub-millisecond pauses [1] (for multi-gig heaps), and it mostly runs in parallel to the application.

You might be referring to Go's old GC, which was dropped when the current was introduced. [2]

I don't know how Filecoin strengthens reliability, but Sia splits your file to 30 small pieces and distributes them randomly among hosts. You only need 10 of the pieces to recover a file. So, in effect, you rely on 10 out of 30 random hosts to be online at the time of recovery. The chance of more than 20 random hosts that are holding your file are offline at the same time is extremely small as long as there's enough diversity among hosters (particularly many different hosting companies and many individual hosters in different regions, so hosting isn't mostly "centralized" to one region or company).

I think Sia's method would prove to be extremely reliable, but again, it depends on the hosters. If the largest single hoster owns less than a third of the capacity of the network, even if they suddenly go offline, you should be able to recover your file since you rely only on a third of the 30 hosts who hold your file to be online.

Also, I think that the number of pieces you need to recover a file can be tuned, so if 33% would prove to not be reliable enough, Sia/Filecoin can tune it down to increase reliability.

Exactly. As long as there's demand to keep hosting files in the network, there WILL be providers hosting your files. Even if a hosting company who hosts 5% of the network (that's a lot) decides to exit the and stop hosting, your files are spread between enough computers and you only need about half of them to be online to recover your files.

Cool tool, but by using it, you depend on it staying alive for longer than any page you archive on it.

This got me thinking about how a decentralized p2p internet archive could solve the trust problem that exists in centralized internet archives. Such solution could also increase the capacity of archived pages and the frequency at which archived pages are updated.

It is true that keeping the entire history of the internet on your local drive is likely impossible, but a solution similar to what Sia is doing could solve this problem: split each page to 20 pieces and distribute each piece to 10 peers such that every y pieces can recover the original page. So, you only have to trust that 10 peers out of 20 that store a page are still alive to get the complete page.

The main problem I can see right now would be lack of motivation to contribute to the system -- why would people run nodes? Just because it would feature a yet another cryptocurrency? Sure, this could hold now, but when the cryptocurrency craze quiets down and people stop buying random cryptocurrencies just for the sake of trading them, what then? Who would run the nodes and why?

OP here. Peloton has been posted here before, but didn't get any attention.

I think this database is very interesting even if you don't care about the time saving part of it, since it claims to be a hybrid (OLAP and OLTP), it implements postgres' wire protocol and it claims to compile queries to machine code using LLVM [1].

Oh finally, Microsoft tackled NONE of Windows 10's privacy problems. I can't believe the most common PC operating system in the world tracks you by default and prevents you from completely opting out.

If only Linux ran Overwatch as well as Windows does, I'd never boot this spyware again.

I don't feel a "dark aura", but I do feel this story is irrelevant to your product's marketing page. I'd put this story away (maybe in a blog post) from newcomers who only want to figure out what's the app can do for them, not for you.
