Apologies, I meant Ukraine war, should have been more clear, it is that simple there.

Congrats from a fellow braliukas on producing such a great movie!
Yeah, it’s a silly segway. The team could have moved somewhere “safe” at any time before the acquisition lol. I’m from the Baltics as well, we are not moving anywhere from our land, photo editing features can wait.
Relieved to hear I’m not the only one. I always blamed myself for not understanding it deeply enough. But admittedly, it is a shit snow and the most frustrating part of development.
Been there and there is no easy answer. Personally, I’ve tried switching jobs, doing new hobbies on a side but it was not enough. I’ve burned out much deeper than 1-month vacation or a new job, doing essentially the same, could fix. In the end, my whole life needed changing. Now I’ve cut my costs a lot, work a lot more on my own projects, take on freelance work, and spend A LOT of time doing other shit that I want to do. It feels crazily unproductive at times and I’m missing out on a lot of money and career improvements. But I feel fucking alive.
I think to get out of the rut, you actually need to do significant changes that feel scary but those are the only ones that will shake you and get you out of the rut. It’s actually really simple but also not easy. In a sense, we crave for that rut and familiarity of what the next day brings but that’s also what kills us. Need to shake up things periodically, try to discover other parts of yourself you didn’t know or forgot about. That will do the job.
Thank you for sharing this! Planning to embark on a similar adventure and having some fears, this is reassuring.
Nice! What kind of consulting and where would you suggest to look for these guys? I’m EU based.
Thank you! Any advice on where to find those? Is maritime experience required?
What about short-term stays? Is it usually only as a visitor, or there might be volunteering opportunities?
Does anyone know how to get a foot in the door for jobs in places like this? Not necessarily Antarctica, could be Greenland or other remote, harsh places. I am a regular software engineer from the EU, would be over the moon to pursue something like this
Such a great comment, absolutely agree and going into "construction" is indeed the remedy for the bleak worldview. We truly do live in amazing times but it's also overwhelming.
Great, thank you for the insightful response! I’ll think about it more. I’m reading the Dune right now coincidentally, the observation about fear is very interesting.
Could you expand a bit more about what you mean about hiding insecurities? Are you hiding them from yourself, or from others? I am reading this as learning to deal with your insecurities but not sure if that's what you mean. Do you have any advice in particular? I feel like my imposter syndrome takes so much mental energy that I spend a lot of it just worrying whether I can do something rather than just doing it.
In my experience layouts is consistently the hardest and most important part of CSS. I’ve tried to master it and am pretty good but still struggle sometimes. So simply creating smaller prototypes to see how a certain layout should be implemented, and then applying it to the real app after, has done wonders. Then pretty visual side i.e. colors, fonts, etc. makes up for the rest but individually is not that hard. I just look up what’s needed in case I need a complex box-shadow, some fancy background, etc.
I’m very bad with selling, or at least I think so. I also associate it with sleazy car salesmen but I realize there’s much more to it. Do you have any resources to recommend?
I see, thank you! That’s what I thought. So keep doing and showing good work, the rest will come.
I personally started low, competing on price and earning 2 dollars an hour, if that, after all fees and all hours that came into building something. This is because at a time I also had to learn a lot. However, I still did my best with each project, communicated nicely and now am working with one client only who supplies me with constant stream of work at hourly rate that none of these job sites ever offer.
The lesson is, do good job, be nice and eventually you will find your way out. As everywhere in life, best opportunities are usually not readily accessible.
Also, I don't hide my age or that I'm a student. I have a proven track record and that's all that matters.
