It's not my country, you assumptive douche. The author was rejected from entering the USA on arguably questionable, but still legal terms.

Based on his account, I'm forced to believe he acted appropriately, and therefore I feel bad for him, but he doesn't have a given right to enter a foreign country.

My advice remains. Custom officials in airports are much better equipped to handle foreigners. So, to hedge your safest bets for next time you go to the US, make the airport your first port of entry.

This is sad. Perhaps maybe fly in next time?

Perhaps the most astute observation in here. Lost count the number of times I've missed the 'the next big thing' when it was right in my face. Each time I tell myself that I'll pay more attention next time. But we all know the definition of crazy.

I love that company. But I just don't see a future where it keeps its doors open. Especially now with Google and Apple joining in.

My monthly take home amounts to about £1600. I live in a really nice shared flat on the edge of Zone 1/2 (Shoreditch) which costs £700 inc. utilities. I don't have a monthly pass, I top up my Oyster card with £20 every month or so. I use a combination of walking/biking/bus/tube to get to places.

So that's £880 left. I spend £100/month on my gym and I budget around £20/day for food. And about £30-50/week on drinks. So at worst I'm left with £440 every month as play money.

It's definitely enough for me, but then again my lifestyle is cheap. YMMV

Thank you for a very honest breakdown. I have lived an equal amount of my life in both London and NJ, and am a citizen of US and UK, so visas aren't my problem. "Abroad" would be neither of the two, unfortunately.

I haven't worked in a consumer space startup before, so it may be wise to get some experience there.

It's pretty hard to gauge the culture of the new startup, as I've only met the CEO and videoconferenced with the rest of the team. While they're undeniably smart and focused, it remains to be seen if the support system and empathy will be on par.

I'm doing fine on my pittance living in the center of London. Perhaps it's due to my spending habits, but I hope this fact stays true if I move to SF. I am assured that in ~9 months, after the next round of funding, employee salaries will go up to market rate.

In an ideal world I would've stayed here in London and trained for another 6 months before moving to SF. My team has become my family, so a large part of my hesitation comes from detachment issues.

Perhaps you're right in that I should get it over with.

I hold dual UK/US nationality, but the healthcare system does concern me. I hear changes are coming next month? Also, the SF startup will subsidize personal health plans.

Why is this the case? I'm a frontend dev for a startup in London and I make 18k annually (80% of that because I only work 4 days a week). It's peanuts, but luckily I don't mind being poor.

Unfortunately my bank decided to outsource their web operation to the cheapest bidder from India and as a result their web application is beyond shit. It requires javascript to work, and therefore I needed a headless broswer engine to scrape it.

Ideally they should be using glyphs with much bolder lines, or if they're really set on using the current ones, place each on a solid white circle. Right now they blend in with the text and seem to add to the overall visual noise.

Scrolling down the page, why the hell am I looking at a gigantic picture of a girl staring back at me? That image would be better placed on an interior decorating portfolio, not a city council website. Ideally the images shouldn't be so large and vague, but if they're set on using it, they should've overlayed the image with its headline in a large white font (currently relegated to the invisible location of below the image)

I have issues with their color scheme too. I think most governmental websites should use white as their dominant color, for clarity's sake. GOV.UK is a website that is worth aspiring towards, not this. Very much not this.

This pretense permeates American culture and it's one of the things that really gets to me, because my personality is very somber by nature.

I talk to everybody as I would a close friend or neighbor, and this includes potential employers. I just can't seem to adopt default business lingo/customs, and this may ultimately be my downfall, but I'm not comfortable slapping on a fake persona.

I too am nostalgic about my Napster days. But if what others are saying is true, that either YouTube or Napster will come after you, I think you could've been a bit smarter about this.

Also, have you considered using the Grooveshark API?

It's very reminiscent of early reddit, with its ugly interface. The ugly interface was actually a feature and a usability bonus. It kept out a lot of riff raff that tried to migrate to reddit from Digg (which at the time had a larger community).

I think HN should have an element of difficulty to its UX, because that keeps the user standard high.
