Let's call it a "figurative expression" then. You could say it would be a "retreat" to not bailout AI. A turn away. Run. For example if the investment in data centers using borrowed money is not paid back on-time, and the investments fail, and there is no bailout, resulting in a cascade of business failures, then the I would say we "retreated" from AI. Retreat from the Technology. Retreat from the Economics of AI services. Hoo-Haa!

For example, if crypto failed there might be a "retreat" as far as crypto is not a bedrock of the banking industry. But I'm probably wrong in my characterization of crypto. Whatever. Not like Crypto can be compared to Tulip Mania. Now there's a retreat.

You have alighted onto an interesting topic: “bail out”. I believe a closely related word on the semiotic chain is “retreat”.

I don’t feel that our culture would wish to “retreat” from AI. I know quite a few managers and programmers who absolutely delight in the fruits of the industry.

No doubt the titans of the AI industry, who stand to lose their shirts, would also like a bailout. As would the workers under their leadership. Finally, if the governments of the world are taking “AI” technologies as seriously as I think they are, then I should expect a bailout in the event of bubble go boom is inevitable.

I’m not asking about implementation of a solution nor of capability, but how the maxim “use what you make” is envisaged by the authors as a mechanism of engagement, management and quality for the IndieWeb. Why is it a pilar?

Having difficulty imagining this constraint.

For example, I use my iPhone’s Note app daily for personal notes. I don’t currently host a site, but if I did I might have content/write on no more than monthly cadence, or per-project.

Does this rule suggest that I should ‘publish’ more (ie. elevate private note content to public more frequently) or build something for my private notes to be hosted on my server? Or something else?

In the first instance we’re talking about that micro commentary you get with social media sites. Becomes something like Kottke’s site. A feed of interesting things.

In the second instance you’re using your server infrastructure more, and so it’s not a machine you interact with only infrequently.

Or am I totally missing the point?

I’ve been thinking about this lately after the Midtown Manhattan building renovation scare. The overall reporting included a discussion of engineering assumptions saying in effect an office building is designed and constructed with certain weight load assumptions based on the planned use. When performing a conversion those assumptions must be uncovered and evaluated for the new use. While that’s logically reasonable, evidently problematic in practice.

So the question in my mind is this, how do municipalities—especially in rural or suburban areas—come to an understanding of these buildings and their impact on the community? The state must move to slow down less cautious local governments from making bad deals.

You have a private idea about the way the world works, but you’re not sharing a hint of the editorial decisions you believe are in effect.

Someone did that for one of my comments recently. It was a strange feeling, having been raised in the ‘New Criticism’ tradition.

I guess they had doubts of my motives, and believed the “shortcut” to answer their concern was to survey my past work to look for more examples of the negative pattern they feared.

What you say has a ring to it. A good idea held in tension—provided ‘incompetence’ is the true opposite extreme.

Though it’s difficult to see the picture clearly, because to all _appearances_ Musk is doing well. US Culture collectively believes incompetence will not succeed for long, and this undermines my assessment.

And there’s the obfuscation. If you can manipulate at large scale and your followers somehow profit by following you, then it’s not competence but “confidence”. It’s all a game and our group is waiting for their turn, their opportunity to profit, get a great tip, win big.

I last owned a car in 2009. I lived on Long Island’s North Shore at the time. The public buses are not great (NiceBus), and the train not very convenient (OB branch). Still, there is as a train and bus service leaving town. There is also a nice in-town municipal bus that costs a dollar and goes to downtown and the grocery store. As it is, the store was only 1.5 miles from my house.

All of this is fine if you’re single. But if you have a family with all the shopping and taxing, it’s not very appealing.

I now live in Queens, NY. While the public transit is better. Unfortunately stores are more spread out and now I’m 2 miles from shopping and there is no shuttle.

All this to say—I’m living the dream without a car, and NYC, even out in the sticks, is not bad if you’re single.

When you say "on the shelf" i presume you're specifically referring to OTC medication and not prescription medication, right? A common sense question deserves a common sense answer. Yes. Companies will happily take your money and sell you snake oil (nominally, so long as the consequences are near zero). Caveat emptor. Phenylephrine as the non-regulated version of pseudoephedrine is the perfect example.

IMHO the only way to buy OTC medication (or food for that matter) is to read the labels and understand the ingredients. (I hate palm oil and sugar. yuck)

For example, I work in hospitality bookkeeping/accounting. Back in 2018 on a call with Chowly I learned Third-Party Online Ordering (TOOS) to refer to the then growing list of companies such as Caviar, Grubhub, DoorDash, etc.

Meanwhile I continued to hear from colleagues a variety of descriptive nouns such as, delivery platform, third-party delivery, delivery apps.

Which was OK, until the market diversified and actual delivery companies appeared, Relay chief among them.

So when someone spoke of delivery-something the question was are you talking about food ordering or food delivery platform?

Funny, but a controlled vocabulary goes with bookkeeping like peas with carrots.

As an aside, i have to spend some time on the phone with vendors and got tired of the dogs breakfast of words used to spell out a serial number or email, Irving-Boy-Momma, Ice-Ball-Monday, and other endless variations. Now I’m Nato compliant, haha. India-Bravo-Mike.
