I believe it was the opposite direction mostly though, as you say, "railway... and light"; to solve their own problems of powering their infrastructure to move people, they got into power generation at a time when there weren't as many players doing what they needed to run their primary business. I'm not sure that power generation getting into trains would be as effective. Nor do I think an LLM/AI company getting into chat and discussions would be valuable. It feels wrong. I’ve had such a hard time with Claude and cadquery/build123d; did you do anything specific to get better results? I tried turning the examples into a markdown document to feed into sonnet as part of the prompt, and that helped a bit, but still couldn’t get it to build basic parts reliably.

My uncle recently passed and it's likely caused by an over worked medical system combined with delusional anti-government conspiracies. But it is not "essentially not available", there are many folks currently working their way successfully through our medical system, and coming out with improving outcomes.

It's one thing to make it an eventual goal to replace workers with AI, it's another to step in and say "hey, our AI can be your labour" when there is a labour dispute in progress. Saying nothing was the correct response, or even "if AI was your labour, this wouldn't happen". But to offer to replace a striking workforce is super shitty.

This was very much my first thought as well, that the costs of these buildings are far higher than schools of the past. It's good to want nice things, but there is a tradeoff.

There is a new highschool being built in my community to replace an aging one. The time and cost overruns of the custom designed building, featuring a towering atrium/lobby and ascetically pleasing frontage, has pushed back the move-in date to midsemester/next year.

Part of me loves that these schools look so much nicer and contain an environment better than the ones I went to growing up---another part of me knows that we have _many_ schools that need replacing of the same age as this new one's predecessor, and hardly a budget capable of doing so if they all are to be completed similarly.

What's so annoying is that this isn't even true. There is a lot of local news and interesting happenings all across our country, yet no one here to cover it. It's cheaper to repackage US news as interesting to canadians (how does this US thing affect canada, with an opinion) or just for voyeurism. Watching televised news, I end up knowing more about what's happening as a "human interest" story in some small US town than what happened across our country.

Canadian media has been gutted, and nothing our government is doing actually works---or just fiddles with the knobs ever so slightly so that it appears as we're doing something, when the results are indistinguishable from the null.
