Eh, betting against Musk generally seems to be a losing proposition. Starlink alone would have given me faith in his abilities, what Tesla's done with Models 3 and Y and SpaceX with Falcon 9 gives me all the more reason to believe him. Yes, despite the absurd timelines, which I'm generally okay with. (Not OP)

I don't think that's fair - getting back the chronological timeline itself made the purchase a good one in my eyes, alongside the For You feed, which seems to work wonderfully (for me). Not to forget you can literally turn off ads if you want. I seem to be a real minority, but I do genuinely believe Musk has done a great job with Twitter (or X).

It actually does seem to be correct, in that Musk doesn't exactly spend his money on homes or cars or yachts or other material possessions - it seems all his money goes to philanthropy and his businesses (hence the 'per se').

It's not about just ad revenue though, is it? Many thousands, if not millions of sites rely entirely on Google Search for their revenue. You cannot simply replace all of them with a chatbot - there are massive consequences to such decisions.

Why would Sundar resign? That makes no sense whatsoever. Google is the clear leader in search, as it has always been. Leader in Mail, Browsers, Drive Storage, Video (YouTube), Maps, Calendars - the entire personal software suite, basically.

Not to forget Waymo leading the driverless car race. It's also not like Gemini is pathetic - it's a very high performing model, and although I'd expect them to be closer to GPT4 by now, if it was that easy someone else would have done it. OpenAI are the only ones to have done this well, and it's extraordinary how well they're doing.

Sidenote, I think HN will be wrong on Elon Musk and X as well over the long term (personal opinion of course). But the way the discourse around X has changed on HN is incredible.

When Parag Agarwal was made CEO, everyone on HN complained about the platform and how a subscription model was the way to go. Now that Elon Musk has instated a subscription model, (seemingly) all on HN agrees he's running the company into the ground.

Seems to be happening a lot more often over the past 4 or 5 years.

Politically captured Twitter was far more politically captured before Elon's takeover.

Closed source Elon open sourced the algorithm.

Everything except short-term profits. X seems decently focused on the long term, especially with subscriptions being introduced as a (new) revenue stream.

Also not sure about R&D, as I don't know what R&D Twitter was doing pre-acquisition, but there's been an extraordinary increase in the rate of addition of new features and changes to the platform.
