FYI the whole point of early exercise + 83b election is that you "pay" all tax due, but the tax due is $0, so you don't pay anything. There _is_ non-trivial risk of sinking liquid cash into illiquid startup stock, but this risk has nothing to do with tax.

The author is excited to talk about helping the employee grow and have more impact, which (if successful) should make them more valuable to the company, resulting in promotion and increased compensation.

He perceives employees who want to talk with him about "leveling" as seeking the formula or checklist to get paid more, and not necessarily about growing or putting in the work.

The latter is fine if your performance objectives are objective and directly aligned with company success (i.e. achievement of sales quotas). It's more fraught if your performance objectives are more subjective or defined in ways that are proxies for company success—it's easy to fall prey to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Goodhart%27s_law where employees do the things that get them promoted, which may actually make them or the company more valuable.

Especially notable is the Sprint accelerated at 100g! That's Mach 10 in < 4s.

California law has established the FAIR plan [1] which is insurance of last resort for people who can't otherwise get fire insurance coverage for their home. It's a mandatory association of insurers who are operating in California.

It's my understanding that FAIR plans are very expensive compared to market-provided homeowners insurance. I presume this is because of adverse selection--if you buy FAIR insurance you're in the same risk pool as people who live in very high fire risk areas and have no other insurance options.

The author seems particularly hung up on the legal implications and consequences of being an open source contributor or project maintainer: "not all legal consequences can be waived", "distance to the legal system", "the real world legal consequences are then stuck with me", etc. It would benefit us all for the author to be specific about these if they are indeed real, as to my knowledge these are mostly FUD.

There are certainly negative aspects to being an open source project maintainer [1] but being legally liable for code offered as-is that you did not author, or being droned by a foreign military intelligence service for accepting a backdoor contribution are not it.

Urban ratepayers would still be subsidizing the infrastructure upgrades, utility undergrounding, and legal settlements involving wildfires in more rural/wildland areas. It’s a matter of capacity. ERCOT only has 1220 MW of interconnection capacity across 4 asynchronous links [1]. Compare this to e.g. California ISO which seems to have about 10,000-15,000 MW of synchronous interconnection capacity [2]. Neither is adequate to fully support historic peak demand in the system [3-4], but California has much more flexibility in emergencies.

Canada obviously doesn't have jurisdiction over foreign donors, so depending on how GiveSendGo implemented their money transmission flows it may not have been possible for the government to distinguish between domestic and foreign financing sources. I agree that domestic money flowing within Canada (to e.g. support Charter-protected actions of others) should not be impeded without a higher degree of scrutiny.

This said, I love Canada and don't believe Canada should tolerate one iota foreign interference in our domestic affairs, especially if it sows division or reduces trust in Canada's institutions. Whether you believe the blockading of border crossings, occupation of Parliament Hill, and disruption of peace in Ottawa were peaceful protests or unlawful assemblies, they were amplified and prolonged by foreign money. Canada should rightly do what it takes to nip foreign influence in the bud.

Remember that these financial controls are about limiting access to donations received from outside of Canada —- over half of the contributions to GiveSendGo were _not_ from Canadians.

Canada has the right (just as the US does) to limit foreign influence in its domestic affairs and its democratically elected government is exercising that right.

It is illegal for anyone who is not a Canadian citizen or permanent resident to contribute to a Canadian political party or campaign. This is also true in the United States.
