You're missing a key point. What makes Linux usable is that it has numerous drivers written for it... written in C. An OS's core is not supremely difficult to write. But the drivers are... Much specialized knowledge is required.

Given that the CIA recently bragged that they were able to put spyware in iOS apps because they have somehow exploited Xcode on developers' machines, one has to think about the implications of downloading executables from companies that are complicit in spying.

Just because I do something safe e.g. I compiled the compiler myself, it is the larger implication of everyone else not doing it right that is the concern.

If it's owned by a corporation that participates in the PRISM program I would not trust them.

There should be a new C that obviates the substantial parts of MISRA.

Ultimately if a newer, tighter, safer C is going to arise it must come fron the GCC or LLVM people.

Google should be thinking in terms of switching android away from Java toward either Objective-C, which is very popular, or C++. This would be a very large and costly change but the longer they wait the higher the costs rise. Furthermore the fact that Google is not using Objective-C means that two teams are always needed for mobile development in most companies... Whereas if they use Objective-C one team could code for both android and iOS.

Alas like most people who work in tech Googlers have trouble questioning assumptions.

To me the key question is whether these checks are anonymous. If not -- if Firefox or a plug-in is sending a unique ID, than any advertiser or government agency could pay for that tracking information and then your privacy would be toast, at least until you can reset that ID.
