But even your example gets worse with AI potentially - the "upsell" of his blog isn't paid posts but more subscribers so there will be thankful readers, a few donators, people talking about it. If the only interface becomes an AI summary of his work without credit, it's much more likely he stops writing as it'll seem like he's just screaming into the void

I think the hard part with these ai models is it’s kind of hard to figure out how many tokens you’re going to use, especially as a new user. 4,000 tokens sounds like a lot for instance, but is tiny
I went to a state school (and not a prestigious one) and I got in ~a year after graduating, I don't think this is super accurate
Personally, I enjoyed Goblin Emperor much more
This sounds like a gpt bot almost exactly?
Looks amazing, great job!
I think Heroku has a right to charge what they're charging but the price is really the only con for Heroku. It definitely isn't the cheapest service out there by miles so if someone could make a Heroku that's cheaper, that would be a huge improvement
Hi HN! Comradery was a startup that I founded and worked on from 2019-2020 before unfortunately deciding to spin it down in the middle of last year (you can read more about why here: https://twitter.com/rishab_hegde/status/1361387261175025666).
I decided that it would be best to open source the platform so hopefully others can make use of it :) Would be happy to answer any questions!
As an FYI, most of the newspapers’ dream places/best places to work are bought and paid for by companies’ PR departments - it’s not a meritocratic competition and afaik, they rarely actually conduct polls or ask real employees. At best they’ll take a glance at Glassdoor rankings
Hi HN! Occasionally I get a little overzealous with my music volume and my roommate has to ask me to turn it down so this weekend I built something that lets him to do it remotely! Hopefully this can make WFH a little easier for a few people :)
Here’s the source! https://github.com/reparadocs/localhostforward
Hi HN! When integrating with some APIs (specifically for auth flows), many will require a callback URL and unfortunately frequently don't allow localhost. This is annoying for local development and usually requires paying for ngrok and using a tunnel to get around that restriction.
I made LocalForward as an easier option!
Awesome, this will be great for hackathons :D
I know this is sort of a meme reply on this forum but this does remind me of the dropbox comment (https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=9224)
Peloton comes ready to go out of the box - you don't need to do any research or find and try out bike groups. It's just way, way easier
Disney+ kicked off the streaming wars. Which is going to be fantastic as a consumer... :(
It actually is going to be fantastic as a consumer. Since people are cutting cable and going to Netflix, the money for content has to come from somewhere - it’s not sustainable to get unlimited quality content for everyone for $12/mo. If new streaming services didn’t appear, the only new content we would eventually have would be Netflix Originals - and if that’s all you want, you can continue just subscribing to Netflix! With Disney+ and others, it gives companies incentives to create great new content. There’s no chance we would have gotten say, the Mandalorian, on Netflix
Very highly recommend, I did the one in spring/summer of 2018 and it was an awesome experience :)
I'm on neither side of this debate, but citing how much Bitcoin is worth seems like a really weak argument in favor of traction.
I think a more convincing argument would be citing # of transactions or use cases (store of value, cheaper way of sending large amount of money or money internationally, etc.)

Right but to fully understand what's going on you need to also visualize the physics in a 3D world - just dots and lines and squares wouldn't fully show what's going on. This may be close to the simplest visualization that made sense
Yeah but Stripe doesn’t get to keep most of those fees - it’s mostly interchange which goes to Visa which is then distributed to the issuing bank of the credit card
My guess is that Brex is more geared towards Silicon Valley VC funded startups - they look at how much money you have in your bank when setting your credit limit (it’s essentially a charge card if I’m using the terminology right - your credit limit is basically what’s in your bank account). The rewards are also more appealing than this iteration of the Stripe corporate card - 7x rideshare, 4x travel, 3x restaurants. Again, my guess is that Stripe is aimed to businesses that don’t fall into the traditional VC startup model - but maybe the rewards will become enticing enough that they will be competitive with Brex in that area in the future as well.
You also can’t discount Stripe’s Connect API - could see this being used in tandem with that for some interesting ideas
Edit: taking a closer look - they also integrate into services like Expensify and if you use their card, first $50k of payment processing is free so that’s also interesting. If you’re paying sticker price, that comes out to something like $1500
All your points are true - but I think using the API to essentially just create a “better front end” for Goodreads would be the the new idea here because of that momentum. You wouldn’t need to add your books or friends on this new app, you would just login with Goodreads and it would all be there. It could also two way sync so even if your friends want to keep using goodreads, any ratings you put on this new app would still show up on your goodreads profile.
The reason “better frontend” is in quotes is because it wouldn’t stop at just making the UI/UX better, but also do better search using Algolia, a better book recommendation engine, etc. but there’s no reason it couldn’t just use the goodreads api as essentially the backend for user profiles and ratings
This seems like a fun side project idea honestly - can I ask what’s most broken and which great features are missing?
I took a quick look and there is a official Goodreads API that you can use to pull titles from people’s accounts (once they authorize your app). Yes, Amazon could shut it down but eh, might be worth the risk
This seems solely because of the recent fines: "Includes an additional $2.0 billion legal expense related to the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) settlement and a $1.1 billion income tax expense due to the developments in Altera Corp. v. Commissioner, as discussed below. As the FTC expense is not expected to be tax-deductible, it had no effect on our provision for income taxes. Excluding these expenses, our operating margin would have been 12 percentage points higher, our effective tax rate would have been 30 percentage points lower and our diluted EPS would have been $1.08 higher."
Haha I did a very similar thing for mine - it was using these to replace clock in systems for hourly workers, no more need to clock in or out, the app would auto detect when you entered/left the building
Unsure about the others but for (2), no. These beacons use low energy Bluetooth so when the app finds a beacon with just Bluetooth (which doesn’t require explicit permission afaik) it can simply report back with that - presumably the owner of the beacon (the store) knows where the beacon is and now they know your approximate location without any phone location services necessary
I hope this is sarcasm...?
Glad I could deliver :P
Gmail doesn't have reminders - and my reminders that I've saved and snoozed, many of which are past March of next year will apparently just disappear once Inbox is sunsetted?
There's Google's Inactive Account Manager: https://support.google.com/accounts/answer/3036546?hl=en
If you use Google Drive frequently, it might be a good option
