Elon Musk - I'm just trying to think about the future and not be sad

Good eye. The ticker was using the observed rate of change over the two most recent data points, so it's actually biased towards the most recent inflation numbers. I've updated it to simply use the slope between the oldest (January 2000) and the most recent data.

It won't be 100% accurate, but it's close enough to create a visual. And the number is always updated monthly with real data anyways.

Hey all. This was merely intended as a fun visualization of inflation over long periods of time, in a format that’s slightly easier to grok for most people.

That’s it. There’s no further intention behind this, I just thought a real time “decay” visualization would be neat.

Literally everything about how this works is in the source in maybe 30 lines of js. It’s not complicated. Data is from BLS (whether or not that's accurate is another conversation entirely). I auto update the data monthly via a chron job, right around the time new data is published.

I’m not really changing this from where it’s at. It’s done as is. There are other sources out there already if you want to customize the date range or see a graph.

Thanks for checking it out :).

This reply cannot be understated. Those who are strong advocates for highly leveraged equity positions who use real estate to justify either have yet to experience a true market decline, or are simply really green to investing.

If I could leverage 4:1 on the total market index using a fixed 30 year loan without the ability to force a sale I would in a heartbeat. Unfortunately, that’s just not how it works.

And anything claiming to be the solution to that (like a leveraged ETF such as UPRO), suffers from volatility decay that causes it to underperform or eventually go to zero in horizontal markets (e.g. lost decades).

I picked up a car from a mechanic the other day and we got to riffing about my own Tesla. He admitted to having friends that worked at Tesla on the manufacturing line. In his own words, these guys are “complete idiots,” and “do shrooms before assembling cars.”

I want to take his words with a grain of salt, but…I kinda believe it. Obviously hearsay means nothing, though.

Not sure if you’re discrediting the parent comment or pointing out the reality of it.

But yes this is something only someone with a high income would say. And yes, it’s true.

Beyond a certain income, the wrong job can be soul sucking and depressing. And it takes achieving that level of income to fully appreciate that reality.

This sounds an awful lot like analysis paralysis to me. My recommendation: just launch. You probably won’t run into any of the problems you’re worried about and, if you do, you can just patch them up.

As you launch more and spend more time dealing with users the default things to do will become second nature, and you’ll find yourself using the built in tools from AWS, DigitalOcean, CloudFlare, etc. rather than rolling them yourself.

But seriously, just launch. There’s a really good chance you won’t have any problems.

I didn’t have time to read the entire article, so forgive me if I blatantly state what it said.

But, isn’t “being bored” leading to enhanced productivity deeply rooted in neuroscience, particularly with regards to dopamine and the reward centers of the brain?

Dopamine is incredibly powerful when understood properly. It can both be the reason you can’t seem to start, and also the thing that allows you to accomplish your goals. Your brain uses dopamine to get you to do more stuff that’s “good for you.”

The problem is, everything in our lives today is engineered to release dopamine, so we get “rewarded” for doing nothing.

By being bored, you dilute yourself down to either doing nothing, or doing the thing you’ve been putting off. It doesn’t take long before the thing starts looking appealing, and you get rewarded for doing it.

This is essentially what people experience when they do a “dopamine fast,” which isn’t really a thing at all, it’s more of a fast from stuff that isn’t productive. It simply works because we really seem to have a dopamine limit within a short time period, where, once reached, things that used to be enjoyable simply aren’t anymore.

Same goes for creativity, motivation, etc. Just stepping away from all the stimulation brings those baseline levels back down and allows you to get excited about doing stuff again, even if it’s not insanely fun.

I’ve been IF for a while now, and it’s the easiest approach to “putting down the fork.” Rather than continuing on a standard eating schedule, simply skipping a meal or going longer between eating actually creates a new habit rather than trying to modify a bad one.

I’m actually capable of going an entire day without eating now and I’m not craving anything. A lot of days I’ll only have one meal, sometimes two.

It’s done wonders for my health. I’ve lost a little under a point per week (wouldn’t recommend more than this), my blood pressure is down, I no longer get heartburn after eating anything, and I feel lighter and healthier.

There are also tons of studies indicating that going longer between meals is healthier, and had anti aging effects on a cellular level. Seems to be an all around winner to me.

True. Delivery drivers consistently deliver to my neighbor instead of myself. The last three digits of our addresses are 885 and 855, and they consistently confuse the two. They’re tired, overworked, underpaid, and I honestly don’t blame them. But I wouldn’t trust anyone in my garage/home when I’m not home. Not sure why these companies think that will actually work.

Learning about the mind and controlling it better has been a recent passion of mine as well.

Like you, I’ve noticed a direct connection between media consumption and quality of life. Namely, if I get a dopamine release with minimal to no effort, my day is pretty much shot as I have little motivation to do anything I want to do.

This has led me to delete all social media, completely. I wiped all my accounts and walked away. I also leave the TV off during the day, which is still weird for me because I’m that person who works with the TV on in the background. I thought it was harmless, but it turns out, it’s not.

Basically anything that gives me dopamine without trying is gone, which in this world is mostly screens.

The more I experiment, the more I realize how important control of one’s mind and thoughts are. I’m now at a point where I believe that the only barrier between one and their goals is their mind. Giving up, doubting, lack of motivation, perseverance, persistence, confidence - it all comes from the mind.

Control your mind, control your life. It’s a lot more difficult than it sounds though :)

AFAIK ACH is incredibly archaic. There are real reasons why money can’t transfer outside of business hours. It’s honestly bizarre to me.

I’m absolutely, unequivocally, happiest at my job when I’m simply making things better.

I loathe building new features, adding new functionality, starting yet another product launch, etc. Yet it feels like 80% of my time at my job is doing the above, probably more.

nobody will complain if your software is faster, or simpler, or just plain better. And I can happily spend the remaining years of my career making that happen.

Software developers need to quit building yet another front end framework, and get back to the actual engineering aspects of making things more performant. IMO, it’s far more rewarding.

When the benefits of money are so obvious but the downsides are so subtle, the downsides you didn’t anticipate can be more jarring than the benefits you expected.

This is a really important aspect of seeking wealth that many people don’t understand. The jump from poverty to no longer missing bills is much more significant than the jump from middle class to upper class. It’s the reason why so many studies exist showing that past $75,000 per year (not inflation adjusted, so try $120k or so), more money doesn’t tend to make you happier. Instead, you trade freedom and happiness for the money you thought would bring you freedom and happiness. Also, trying to become a billionaire is most definitely a lonely and sad path.

A somewhat healthier goal would be to become “financially free,” whatever that means to you. No longer needing to work, allows you to do the work you actually love.

Yeah I agree the landing page should contain a clearer input-output example for new users. I’m just lazy :).

On the topic of lazy, the privacy policy was generated using some random free privacy policy generator (I forgot which one).

I took the sms approach because I’m exhausted from always needing to install an app for everything. Most things don’t need apps. This interface is unique and kinda fun to use. Also, it took me just a weekend to whip up so I’m quite fond of it .

There’s a difference between freedom of speech and education. The government did a bad thing. Anyone should be allowed to speak their piece.

We need more people to speak up when those speaking the loudest are wrong, uneducated, and unqualified to speak on the topic they’re preaching.

I get the incentive here, but it’s not the governments place to decide what we do and don’t say.

Society as a whole needs to be better at calling out the lies with hard facts and data. Because right now, it feels like the people with the most effective voices are taking us in the wrong direction.
