you will want to take a look at how wikileaks does it thing. you will need people in asset havens like bahamas/etc uploading you stuff on the sly, as my understanding is a lot of the way this works is simply information hiding by having an official registry that is text only, having legal standing, not searchable in any electronic way. when a crime is committed you get to initiate a legal proceeding that will eventually unravel the paper trail in the bahamas or wherever, but each step takes n amount of time, and when you have shell companies under shell companies the stalling strategy can be quite effective.

She was an extreme case of a real problem.

Yelp may not be bad all the time, but it certainly hurts people in some cases, and appears to have extortionate sales practices.

Hear hear.

I'm not a yelp user, but the other problem that occurs to me is the anonymity.

Of course you have user profiles, but you can't (easily) track a review back to a human being, which is why this was such a shock to the reviewer in the magazine article when it actually happened.

The businesses stand there naked and the reviewers can take little potshots at them behind the screen of anonymity. No wonder some people go a little crazy.

If yelp made reviewers less anonymous, such as stating where you work, maybe this would be less of a problem.

At least bad reviews would probably be polite and dignified rather than outright nasty.

wasn't it the 1963 nuclear test ban treaty? basicaly, after that, you could only detonate nukes during peacetime underground, right?

and orion would have been detonating them not-too-distant from earth when ramping up for interstellar voyages.

partial summary:

Euro is conservative, US is aggressive, fly by the seat of pants.

Euro startups do prove, build, scale. They are good at prove and build, but they are recalcitrant about providing the funding that will allow a proven idea to really scale well.

US skips directly to the scale stage, even with a donkey like cuil.

So, US is at a disadvantage in early stages because ramp up too fast, but euro is at a disadvantage once they have a horse worth backing. Both US and Euro have a lot to learn from the other.

I'm not arguing either thing.

My argument, if you want to call it that, is that the people running JP Morgan are social parasites or criminals, depending on your point of view, so I don't take anything they do too seriously.

If the japanese mafia decided to open a shelter for puppies in yokohama, I would look at it in a pretty similar light. Thanks for the puppy shelter, mafia dudes, but you're still a bunch of criminals.

Specifically, that's 0.25% of 2.1B in income (26.9B total revenue).

Marketing is everything, and I'm pulling this out of my ass but I think Chase's biggest marketing ploy is the sheer number of branches and ATMs they have and are acquiring.

They get this huge tarp subsidy and then they spend a big chunk of it buying (or renting?) cheap real estate in the ghetto...

Buying cheap facebook karma is just the analog to this in the virtual realm.

JPChase were also deep with Enron, FHA, Fanny/Freddy and pretty much all the scams/information warfare that are draining the average citizen.

I bank at a local credit union. ATM fees suck but it feels righter paying Chase the one-off fee than giving them my savings so they can lend it out at a 20X multiple and continue the mindrape.

In the spolsky article referred to by the top post, spolsky says "I had to wonder. We do have a large competitor in our market that appears to be growing a lot faster than we are. The company is closing big deals with big, enterprise customers. And the wheels are falling off the donkey cart over there as the company stretches to fulfill its obligations. Meanwhile, our product is miles better, and we're a well-run company, but it doesn't seem to matter. Why?"

Does anybody know what fogbugz-competitor product Joel is referring to?

UPDATE: probably jira.

Do you consider Los Angeles a major california city?

not really sure about the validity of your overall point, but at least for mysql I would say that's a one off.

most open source software is not going to be ridiculously profitable, and buyng mysql was a desperation for sun which didn't pay off.

not every startup can open source their code. some can, as reddit did, but this would not seem to be advisable from time zero, more something you have the luxury of after you dominate the brand/space.

that said, I tend to share everything knowledge related and not worry about it, trust to karma.

there are many forms of wealth.

how much did they pay you to say that?

ha hah, just kidding, I actually kind of like bing, and you know why? the nice pictures.

I wish they would show the pictures on the results page as well.

search results ain't bad either ;)

That's an interesting idea.

What if the bad-guy governments use these proxies themselves to spam/dos and generally behave badly.

Proxies get blacklisted.

Government can get back to rounding people up.

I guess at some point, if you're going to try to overthrow the government, you have to reach out to your neighbor and take to the streets, regardless to what technology you have available.
