The official Blackpink (kpop group) light sticks from one of their tours have this functionality built in. The annoying part is that one of their Spotify albums have this 18-20khz control track present, and (when I was younger) I could hear it and it annoyed the heck out of me.

In a normal conducting material eddy currents dissipate relatively quickly. The shard of material in the magnet video appears to be floating quite stably for dozens of seconds, which implies that eddy currents are not being dissipated. I'm personally excited, I think it's the real deal but with some limits on maximum field strength and current

Huh, same! I remember the changeover happened sometime around fifth grade, so 2011-12 for our district? (Strangely enough our school's wifi used WEP until 2014ish. I remember the password was obviously contrived to the right length)

That's how Type 2 cables in Europe work, at least for L2 AC charging. DC chargers have built in cables, probably because the wire gauge needs to be a lot thicker to support the current (why haul all that around?) and for water cooling in the case of Supercharger V3s.

Submarine descends too fast, ~38m/min instead of ~25m/min. Support vessel notes discrepancy, sub presses on with descent.

At 9:28a, hull monitoring alarm sounds. Upward thrust is commanded to no effect. Ballast released to no effect. Landing frame released after several attempts, but ascent rate 1/4 of planned.

At 9:38a, crackling sounds heard in aft of ship.

At 9:46:37, power bus A reports failure. Crew switches to power bus B. More sounds heard. This is the last communication received by the support vessel.

If this is authentic, then it basically confirms gradual delamination that snowballs into catastrophic implosion. It's horrible that the crew knew things were going wrong for nearly nineteen minutes and could not do much about it.

How would you begin trying to "solve" something you don't understand the internals of? Much like you can't assess whether a person has ulterior motives just by talking to them over text, how could you be sure the model isn't giving you the answers you want to hear while suppressing its true intentions?

And how would you quantify alignedness? Rating outputs for a given input falls prey to the first problem. Analyzing activations as they trickle through the model is intractable analytically, and training a "polygraph" model on the activations of your network raises more alignment issues (how can you be sure the polygraph isn't lying to you?)

I'm ready to eat my words, but I think perfect alignment is infeasible. The best we can hope to do is curate training data and hope the caged bird won't sing.

The advantage being that existing fuel-burning plants can theoretically be seamlessly replaced by solar/wind/hydro/nuclear or more efficient fuel-burning plants down the road -- electricity is electricity no matter where it comes from. A thermal-engine vehicle will be stuck burning the same fuel at more or less the same efficiency for its entire lifetime.

(As a cool aside, some fuel-burning power plants are already crazy efficient. For example, my university has a trigeneration plant that, in addition to electricity, provides steam and chilled water to the campus by extracting the residual heat that would normally be sent straight to the atmosphere. I believe the plant uses an ammonia absorption cycle to produce cold water from a heat source, which is pretty awesome in its own right.)

Now, I'm not sure if this process happens fast enough for an EV to be more efficient over the projected lifetime of the battery. I think it ultimately comes down to your local regulatory environment, existing distribution of energy sources, and public willingness to invest in more efficient infrastructure.

Yeah, the pack-in toy title Astros Playroom for PS5 is probably the gold standard for Dualsense haptics implementations. It's legitimately immersive, and turns the game from a 'meh' generic themed platformer into an actually compelling game. I was surprised at how much fun I was having pulling cords and stomping little bug things.

I believe most vehicle AC compressors run directly off of the serpentine belt (12v power comes from the engine anyway, why send it through the alternator and battery?) or, in the case of electric cars, off of the ~400v traction battery. The compressor draws around 1-2kW at full tilt, so in all cases it's best to run it directly off of the main power source with as few intermediate conversions as possible.

Is this claim substantiated? I've seen all sorts of opinions ranging from "use European sunscreens containing non-FDA-approved UVA filters" to "just rub lard on skin, drink raw milk, and lift heavy weights". I feel like chemical sunscreens have been ubiquitous enough for long enough that any correlation in skin cancer rates would have been long pointed out by now.

This honestly felt like something out of Hunger Games, with some obviously well-off, out-of-touch, work-from-home dweebs wearing this unit to show off their status to their Apple ecosystem social circle. And then we have Disney! With Marvel and Star Wars! So you can experience Adventure! Without leaving your home!

Yeesh, this says a lot about their target market.

Cool tech, though. Let's hope I'm not peer pressured into wearing one of these masks for my kid's goddamn birthday party.

This really is technology wrapped up in an experience that feels magical. I'm decently familiar with the state of the HMD industry and I reckon they're a solid 5 to 7 years ahead of Meta in terms of processing power and display tech, not to mention all the ancillary details you have to get right to deliver a convincing AR experience like lens adjustment (they demonstrated a crazy 2D motor controlled carriage for centering the screens, no doubt automatically driven by the eye tracker without user intervention)

I guess the only real bummer is the high price -- all those optical components can't be cheap at this scale -- and the short battery life which really can't be solved without either a serious breakthrough in power efficiency (which apple is on the frontier of), battery density (likely same) or sacrificing visual fidelity (not in Apple's ethos). I don't mind the external battery pack, actually; hopefully it results in a well balanced headset.

I wonder if they're going to do in-person demos at the Apple store. I might have to go check it out.

wow. The attention to spatial detail really makes this stand out from any other headset on the market.

Apple really are the kings of making incredibly advanced technology seem, for lack of a better word, magical. They showed the headset has a really fancy two axis motorized system for lining up the lenses with the user's eyes -- something literally no other headset has tackled -- but didn't elaborate on it. The assumption is it's just what's required to deliver a good experience, not something to be used as a selling point in and of itself.
