Our school converted a computer lab to a programming lab. Computers in the lab have editors/compilers/interpreters, and whitelist documentation, plus an internal server for grading and submission. No internet access otherwise. We've used it for one course so far with good results, and extending it to more courses in the fall.

As recently as last semester, CS professors have been doing pen'n paper exams and group projects. This setup sounds great!

Problems with both education systems can exist at the same time. As a society, we can try to address the issues with both home schooling and the public education system, not just one or the other.

Nobara Project[1] helps with this. It is somewhat gaming-on-linux focused, but for some, like myself, that's a win. I use it on both my desktop (Intel CPU, AMD GPU) and my Thinkpad T480: works great on both.

One of the troubles with this argument is that it fundamentally assumes that people who live in cities don't care about people who live in rural areas. People are capable of having empathy and understanding of people who are not like themselves. We don't need to Other/make outsiders out of fellow citizens who have different lifestyles than us.

I know it's a little petty, however not being able to move the taskbar has zeroed out any interest I had in using Windows 11. I'm a huge fan of moving the taskbar/dock to the left vertical side of the screen, especially so on a 16:9 screen.
