Isn’t the important difference that it doesn’t trigger bankruptcy on default? Economically it might not be that different but it has some significance legally because the courts have some fast tracks that trigger bankruptcies (IANAL but that’s my layman’s understanding).
If they “default” in this case it will lead to lawsuits that they will almost certainly lose but in the mean time they kick the can down the road hoping to recover on general economic headwinds like lower interest rates. IMO the risks are obviously correlated here but I’m betting short term incentives drove this mess.

Calling it prompt engineer is doing it a disservice. With agents we’re well into process engineering, which is a ton more interesting.
The obvious baby’s first process is “plan -> execute” but as we learn about the strengths and weaknesses of LLMs you have to start unpacking that process into planning, prototyping, testing, validation, reviews, and tons of research. If you treat it like an extension of your brain that can automate some thought processes, it becomes a lot more powerful.
Hopefully this is a bug and it makes them do another reset.
I also don’t think people realize how often they zone out while listening to audiobooks and miss important details. You can zone out while reading books too but with audiobooks there usually another stimulus by design.

Robust/(adaptive) exact predicates and tolerance tracking solve two different things and a geometric kernel needs both, especially if you plan on letting models use meshes, lattice, or freeform surfaces (which is where the industry is headed for simulation driven design). The constructions you feed the exact predicates need to already account for tolerances to be correct (i.e. pcurves, vertices, etc) and the second you do any math on them - before feeding it to the predicate - you need tracking. Predicates don’t eliminate the floating point math.

Unfortunately geometric kernels are one of those things where unknown unknowns will bite you in the ass really hard because none of the content is really in the training data for LLMs and pathological/degenerate cases aren't just common but expected. IME it's not something that can be vibe coded with current models, if ever, without intimately understanding the algorithms.
I can't do a thorough review of waffle iron right now but just off the top of my head: it doesn't look like you have a tolerance context? The tolerances look like hard coded constants (TAU_MODEL/TAU_WORK/MATCH_TOLERANCE/etc) but that's fundamentally unworkable. Each operation and vertex/edge/etc needs to track accumulating errors and apply them to downstream point classification. Interfaces like Kernel::boolean_union(a, b) are the wrong abstraction because it's missing tons of information/functionality like accumulating FP errors, evidence/proofs, rollback, etc.

I think for many people (myself included) understanding mathematics is rooted in application because it helps bridge the divide between intuition and rote memorization. Without the application, IMO instructors are doing a disservice to their students and pedagogy of mathematics itself. They’re intentionally ignoring a significant fraction of the class, unless they’re teaching some esoteric grad level pure math.
Canon is still in the market, they just supply parts and license IP to the printer manufacturers like HP. They make some high value stuff to sell to the OEMs but I don’t think they can make a whole print head anymore.

The really big push came with the China Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund in 2014 at which point they were plowing billions into the industry across the public and private front. That one fund alone has $100 billion in assets under management at this point, and there are many other funds involved.
They’ve also invested in AI separately (before LLMs) in that time period but I’m less familiar with that sector.
