I'd encourage a different interpretation of the data: Cancer holding steady actually is an improvement.
Everyone is guaranteed to die of something, and the longer you live the likelihood of that something being cancer greatly increases. So as people shift away from other categories, i.e. heart disease and childbirth, and live longer, they're going to shift towards the cancer category. I'm actually amazed that cancer hasn't gone up significantly.

This should be the top comment. This article seems to be playing games with the numbers. Why do they choose to focus on the fraction of the unemployed? This trend could just be explained by greater numbers of people attending some amount of college relative to the past. They should really show the fraction of college educated unemployed, vs fraction without college educated unemployed, but that wouldn't fit their narrative.
They're presenting averages, which should always be accompanied by the standard deviations, otherwise they're close to meaningless. I actually think box plots would be better here.

This is simply wrong - when you solve a protein structure is is mandatory that you submit it to the pdb (i.e http://www.pdb.org/pdb/101/motm.do?momID=148) and nearly every journal I read has both color figures and extensive online supplementary materials.

Also, I want to point out that "essential readings" is not the right attitude. In order to really make progress you're going to need to get your hands dirty and work though some examples. One very good exercise is to write an interpreter for a language you invent.

I love the idea and hope it happens. Day[9] springs to mind, he's a former pro starcraft player who teaches the high levels of the game to other players in a weekly stream. He appears to be at least ramen profitable. I wonder if he serves as a model for this kind of approach. It would be great to see a Day[9] for every subject, even something as far flung as tennis instruction. Access to coaches is limited to highschoolers or those with gobs of money.
He really needs a positive control, i.e. something he knows for sure improves his sleep in order to quantify the effect. Say his data shows a small effect, and it is even statistically significant. He still won't have learned anything without having some reference for the magnitude of the change.
The standard test for causality (at least in biology, where I work) is to test for rescue. You first establish that under conditions a, event b happens. You then reverse a, and observe b returning to normal. This, followed by controls demonstrating that you're only changing a and are actually measuring b serve as a stringent test for causation.
It would be nice if the author provided a citation or two to back up the sweeping statements he or she is making.
There are some major inaccuracies in the way biomedical research is presented in this article. For one, in nearly every mouse study, confirmatory studies are also carried out in human tissue cultures (Hela cells are a famous example), which are completely absent from their pie chart.
Secondly, the article completely ignores sequencing efforts - an astonishing oversight in my opinion. Obviously, we can't do genetic studies on humans, but inexpensive exome sequencing is rapidly allowing us to do observational studies in humans.
