I started as manager a bit after the start of the pandemic and left after 9 months.
I was full of hope and illusions, but I had to recognize that it was not for me. Too many fires to manage, urgencies, external and internal politics, changes of management, lots of deliverables each week for the executive committee… What surprised me was that managing the team was very rewarding and I quite enjoyed it. I also benefited from a mentor and a coach.
But at some point, I was asked to do stuff that I found dubious ethically (not illegal or anything, just some “flexibility” with the truth) and I became ill. I had to take antidepressants and anxiolytics. A few weeks later I had to take a sick leave for 4-5 weeks, then I talked with my N+1. I have the chance that I work for the state, so I just had to ask to get my previous position back. I thought that I would be burned, but I was directly assigned in the core team of the biggest business transformation project the company had ever had, together with MBB consultants. I also got like 5 other internal offers from other teams that wanted to hire me.
I do not regret my passage as manager because I met a lot of people and grew my network. It was a very exposed position so I had to manage a lot of bullsh*t but it was very central, so I had the privilege to work with all the executives of the company.
I lost a bit of salary (management bonus) when I got back as individual engineer but got my serenity back. Now I’ve just been promoted to Principal Engineer, which is almost the same package as when I was manager, but for an IC. I also find it important for me for the recognition it gives.
So now I understand better that middle management is really hard and, for me, not worth the price. But I have more appreciation for my colleagues that are managers. I may consider becoming a manager again in the future, but I am not sure yet.
Where I live, wages are automatically adjusted for inflation. Quite comfortable, but it favors high wages.

Do they really know exactly what the raw text looks like? It seems so huge that no human could read all the text from each corpus. And the models have been fed text from many different languages. I doubt they have people who understand all the languages.
Regarding RLHF, I also hope that they kept the logs of all the human decisions. But since it was (at least partially) outsourced to African companies like Sama.com, do they really get back all the logs or just a new fine-tuned model?
But they must indeed at least know what is done with the text submitted to the prompt or to their API.

I've learnt that it's OK not to succeed on the first try. It's not about the destination, it's about the journey. As long as you're getting closer to your goal, you're on the right track. But you don't usually get there right away.

Apple is also culprit of this.
I activated the free trial for Apple Arcade because an ad for it was prominently shown in the settings app.
If you cancel the free trial, they immediately terminate the access. But worse: they did not send an email before charging the first non-free month. When I saw a €4.99 charge on my credit card, I canceled the trial (that I did not even use). I was disappointed about Apple using such dark patterns.
Here are a few workarounds for raster tiles [0]. You can either:
- limit the maximum zoom for raster tiles layers
- use higher resolution tiles (if they exist @2x or @4x)
- lower the DPI in Layout Settings -> Export settings (it should not impact vector layers)
- user vector tiles

I work for the Belgian railways and I have a free unlimited first class pass for Benelux (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg) + lots of international free tickets, also in 1st class. But no company car, obviously.
There is no UX: it's just a small sheet of paper.
I was worried that OneDrive would not work correctly anymore.
I've just checked and it works as expected. Click on "Always Keep on this Device" to keep a local copy of some files.
The only difference is that the OneDrive shortcut in Finder is now under Locations instead of Favourites.
It may be annoying for people needing to re-download all their local content though.

I own a MacBook Air M1. Today, I noticed that my Homebrew Python (3.9.1 on Intel) installation had reverted to the default one (3.8 on ARM). I forced a reinstall with homebrew and I got an ‘illegal hardware instruction’ error when running python3. It was corrected by building from source (with the -s switch: brew reinstall -s python3).
I found out about this issue on Github and I learned that the M1 chip does not support AVX (which is indeed documented) and that Homebrew developers assumed that all CPUs supported by Big Sur were compatible with AVX instruction set (which is true except for the M1 under Rosetta 2).
I found it interesting to see how they rapidly corrected the situation by merging a partial revert. I also found their CI infrastructure interesting to watch while it was live-testing the commit.
They could show it in their UI:
- Pending
- Pending with funds available
- Cleared
Isn’t Firefox’s market share artificially low because most FF users are blocking Google Analytics and other trackers?
