There are other benefits as well.
Youtube promotes trending videos, so if you get a lot of views very quickly, particularly among a common demographic, then the video will be more heavily promoted, and is more likely to go viral.
Similarly, videos with lots of view tend to appear higher in search results.
I imagine that people at youtube are very aware of this, and put an effort into distinguishing ``real'' view (consistent demographic/trusted referer) and ``fake'' (spammy/ black hat SEO) views.

This is incorrect for several reasons.
First off, they mention that when the initial design decision was made, a similar operation cost ~$160, which is tenable for an operation that only happens once in a while. This is in fact a case of them getting bitten by the pricing structure changing after a reasonable design decision (at the time) was implemented.
Secondly, they mention that this is part of a larger issue: "In our most common case we might have to add and delete a couple items to the list property every once in a while. That would still cost us well over $1,000 each time. Most of the reasons for this type of data in our product is to compensate for the fact that there isn't full text search yet. I know they are beta testing full text, but I'm still worried that that also might be too expensive per write."
This is a real problem that GAE needs to solve.
Finally, their problem doesn't seem to be that they need arbitrary precision, its that they seem to need fast location centric queries of a large database.
Geoboxes allow you to solve this problem correctly (and quickly), returning the results in the database that are closest to you. Matching on a geohash can end up serving the incorrect data unless you resort to hacks involving a number of queries.
This doesn't exactly qualify as "just another domain name".

Except that it is extremely useful as a powerful calculator for students and professionals doing technical things, and in the process of being very handy teaches people mathematica notation. Just because it's not necessarily aimed at the average person doesn't mean its not aimed at anyone.
I expect Wolfram alpha has done a lot to drive sales of mathematica.
If you are referring to Africa, there's a good reason multinational corporations aren't opening up shop.
Namely, the multinational corporations of the 1880's and on made such a mess of things that many of the countries now have very little infrastructure and spigot economies where multiple parties jockey for control of the natural resource(s) and hence power in the country.
Barring some sort of radical change, this situation isn't changing any time soon for most places.
The irony is (excepting south Africa and Egypt which have their own histories), the only stable countries where companies might be able to set up shop are the ones with no natural resources, because there's not much to fight over.

Meh... what I've always gotten out of stuff about Fibonacci numbers is that it's pretty amazing that a lot of disparate things in nature seem to arrive at similar patterns because very different situations end up having similar sorts of constraints.
The fact that the Fibonacci sequence doesn't explain the mechanism is kinda the beauty of the thing.
Sure people take it too far, or misinterpret it and what not... but that doesn't stop this article from being a little silly.
I disagree, I think there are plenty of social groups where this type of media isn't looked down upon at all. Same with shooters... ect.
If your goal is to chase immediate gratification (as many a person seems to do), you'll be better served by metrics that reflect this aspect of things, instead of deciding to spend time doing something you think will be immediately gratifying, and getting something else in return.
Good for society? Decidedly no.
Unavoidable because it better serves demand, I think probably.
At the same time... I think if these sorts of metrics become ubiquitous, people will become more acutely aware of the distinctions between quality and gratification value... so I don't think these things are only a symptom.

Glad it still occurs. I see a lot of potential for this sort of stuff both in term of developing new therapies, but also in the sense of doing controlled experiments to better understand perception and cognition in humans.
gogogaget space race: Redux?
All I know is that at school when I'm on public computers, sometimes I'll accidentally use bing without noticing, do a couple queries, get frustrated by not finding the link that I'm looking for (often a course website), notice I'm using bing, and switch over.
I was told to do this in a psych class I took freshman year in college.
I emailed my second grade teacher, who was probably the person that got me into reading. She was extremely grateful, and a decade later still remembered everyone in the class.
The one potential problem with going down this road is that even fewer people will have a broad understanding of what is going on in complicated experiments as labs are increasingly encouraged to specialize in a technique.
Without some incentive for such people to exist, it seems likely that "obvious" connections between different fields may be missed for extended periods of time as people focus on executing incremental experiments.
The app looks pretty polished
Just because the average quartile in the US falls in the bottom quartile in Singapore doesn't mean that the top quartile falls into the average quartile in Singapore.
While on average here the system is pretty bad, the US also tends to produce the people that end up making some of the largest contributions to science and math.
There is very good education available here, it simply isn't available to everyone. The outliers are still performing on a very high level.
