I don't know if your solution is correct. Many functional abstractions in Haskell, such as those that involve high level typeclass abstractions, make code more esoteric, and not more clear. However this is a tradeoff to make code more based in algebra and logical structure. This is more important than readability and conciseness.

This article conflates abstraction with OO and language features, IMO.

Putting some functionality into an object is not as interesting as running that functionality as a monadic command.

Would be more interesting to run some benchmarks in Haskell using functional abstractions rather than OO machinery.

Just use protocol buffers. This can't really be a serious competitor to json/thrift/protobuf with no benchmarks and only a python client, sorry.

POETTERING EFFECT - It appears that lately some Linux developers are concentrating on changing things (that work fine) with no particular reason, breaking existing functionality in the process and running away before the job is really finished (sometimes called the Poettering effect), while in fact it would be better to make a nicely polished finished system that can be used from installation without having to tune it up.

Poettering is a complete asshole and deserves all the hate he gets. He replaces perfectly fine software with his own shitty code, and has done noting innovative in his entire life.

No. Scala is a very functional language that you can write imperative code with. Swift is not functional and doesn't have real monads. Ruby monads are just a way of obfuscating your code. Monads are more than the monadic bind >>=. You cannot just use monads and ignore the rest of category theory, it's like using a stick to fix the engine of a car. Useless. Just use a real functional language so you don't have to deal with this tomfoolery.
