Could not agree more with this. AI bubble needs to burst. Since AI I hate this industry more and more with every day.You can't buy PC for normal price anymore, because AI bubble bought everything. I did not wanted any kind of AI in my OS/website/whatever software.

But searching for job literally made me asking myself what I am even doing with my life.

I love 2000's era (especially tech, but music too). I think almost everything about 2000's tech was superior, from hardware to software. Things were solid, build to last. Software had clean, simple user interface. The user was invited, not forced to do something. For me nothing can beat philosophy of XMB (XrossMediaBar).

I don't know how to find my way in all this IT thing now. Never liked programming, what always intetested me was hardware and IT administration. But every day I wake up it just gets worse. IaC, SaaS, software is worse than ever before. And don't forget hardware speculations.

In 2000's tech was so easy, now it's just annonying, harder and obfuscated with every day.

I miss 2000's simplicity.

Only DSi Enchanced and 3DS games supported WPA2 at best. Your best bet is using older router with OpenWRT to make WPA3 to WEP bridge.

Refurbished laptops can be superior in comparison to cheap Bestbuy laptops. These old laptops are often much more solid built, have better keyboards, may even have better screens (FYI brand new laptops with cheap TN 1366x768 screens are still manufactured).

Good refurb definitely should have an SSD and battery at least in good condition.

I'm asking because on so many PCs it doesn't seem realistic, so why did you go with 13600KF CPU instead of cheaper 13500/13600 non-K CPU? Also, If you don't plan overclocking didn't you through about going with cheaper B760 Motherboard + 10Gbit/s NIC? 2. Why did you choosed so slow memory? These i5 can benefit a lot in gaming from fast memory such as 7200MT/s+. 6000MT/s CL30 would probably be at same price as your kit, while providing nice performance boost in games. 3. How does Key rollover work for you on K120? Can you use Shift + W + 1 key combo for example? Just asking, because some people on Internet say such combo won't work on later batches of K120.

In this setup what I really appreciate is that you didn't go with Virtualized PCs route (that causes a lot of problems with modern video games) and so much amemities for your cat :)

It's mostly up to you and your requirements. Most laptops should be fine, that doesn't really matter that much whenever do you use windows or Linux. I think thinkpads are way too over hyped. I would just grab something with good build quality, and specs you need. If you want something really fancy like fingerprint, smartcard reader make sure it's compatible with Linux, that's all.

I wouldn't recommend fedora as it uses RPM and SElinux which can be tricky, especially for beginners.

I am mid-advanced Linux user, I would went with Linux Mint, no matter is it for me or for somebody totally new.

Up to 10% performance hit isn't small. Controversial opinion, but linux isn't good for gaming even in 2024.

People who are making such things possible are doing great piece of work, but I would say it's more about gaming industry isn't ready for this. Developers still don't case about linux, performance hit is too big, anti-cheat systems have issues and Linux desktop is too fragmented.

Overclocking on Linux almost doesn't exist in comparison to Windows. Most of tools aren't available on Linux.
