I'm curious what tools do people use to apply to jobs automatically? Would this be automatically flagged by recruitment systems as AI? We have never had a problem like this at our company but now I am little paranoid

But offering something to the public for free for years and once they make an essential useful place in the society, using their position as ransom to extract money is still unethical in my eyes. e.g. If Reddit was going to be a paid service from the beginning, this would not have happened. They only shove their advertisement and dark patterns ridden app when they have gotten their users addicted. Same thing with Youtube, Gmail and other services. Reaching critical mass and then using their market position to extract money or selling data.

I am not even a power vim user but having vimium on firefox helps reduce the thought to action latency significantly.

If someone is able to get over the steep learning curve, having vim bindings on your fingertips is awesome.

One way to fix this to stop your PC from communicating with any facebook servers.

Not being forced is the wall behind which every un-ethical tech company hides.

- Nobody is forcing me to use youtube, but youtube has years of collection of important tutorials and educational material.

- Nobody is forcing me to use facebook (and its products) but fb has gathered users over the years that forces me to use the product in order to remain a part of the social sphere. Kids feeling left out in high-school because of not using instagram is an example.

- Nobody is forcing me to use Netflix, but if I want to watch the trendy movie that my friends are talking about, I do not have a choice.

If you see the pattern, tech companies by the virtue of their money have created a social effect where they might not "force" me to use their product but I have to use it if I wish to remain a part of the society.

It is difficult to swim upstream and the companies by the virtue of their deep pockets have shifted the flow that helps them make the most money.

Facebook is founded on 3 pillars of unethicalities.

1. Data Privacy - They will try to find every possible way to sell your data and not get noticed. An easy example of that is when fb started throwing fits when apple didnt let it track users activity across all apps by default. They tried to hide behind the fact that it would "severely" affect small businesses.

2. Depleting Mental Health - They will try to find every possible way to keep you engaged on the platform. That is often done by algorithmically promoting content that inspires extreme emotions in you. Emotions such as anger, jealousy, lust etc. Experiencing these emotions for an extended period of time EVERYDAY is not healthy for maintaining a good emotional balance.

3. Fake News - They will try to find every possible way to shrug off responsibility for spreading fake news. This affects politics by creating echo chambers, healthcare by preventing people from believing in the correct diagnostics and other areas.

I agree that nobody is stopping you from opening facebook, but facebook is like smoking. Everyone only wants to try it once, and then many fall into the downward spiral.

I was reading somewhere that how resisting facebook and all of facebook products everyday is not possible with the will power reserves that an average human has. This is because he is competing with psychologists and researchers employed by facebook who have been studying human behaviour for years.

Indian marriages are a sham in my opinion. I would like to respectfully disagree with you. Most Indian marriages do survive because of tolerance but the tolerance arises from the societal pressure and stigma that surrounds separation. I am getting close to a marital age and have been observing Indian couples. I see a pattern where many couples are not happy but are still together because they can tolerate each other. Messages sent are encrypted, but what about the keyboards. I know Samsung logs all key strokes for ad purposes. Also WhatsApp backups maybe? Are they encrypted? What if another app is reading off of them. Or screen time apps, most of which are selling your data and need permission to read everything on your screen to block apps and content

I think they are trying to facebookifying (for the lack of better word) their interface. The trade off here is that user engagement lost due to bulky js is covered by the increase in user engagement due to flashy web features. user engagement is corporate double speak for user addiction.

I once bought a System76 laptop. Spent quite some money on it as a student. It only lasted me 2 years. After that its chasis started to come apart, screen died and a few other things.

System76 really seems like a good idea, but one bad experience is enough for me to spend my 1000$ on another brand. Thinkpad has been a much better experience so far

I have permananently blocked youtube on my browser. I use yt-dl to download and watch important videos. It is cumbersome but keeps the addictive tactics employed by yt at bay by increasing friction.

I call my mom everyday to tell her my goals for the next day and how I did on my goals yesterday. I think it is a good practice because

- it keeps me accountable

- it helps me to talk to myself, in a more efficient manner

- it is a good thing to talk to your parents. she feels really nice about it

Before this I used to write in a journal, but I have found this to be much more efficient and has several side benefits.

You can also try finding someone close parents/siblings/friend/sibling etc.

I have observed that most of the times, when I am not motivated to work, it is becasue my sub-concious mind is unable to correctly traverse the behavior tree and find a route from 'the non intuitive task' leading to the 'sexy results' I am after. My concious thinking mind has already done that.

But your sub-conscious brain being able to link the results with the efforts is not a precondition to start working. It only facilitated the process, and does not act as a deciding factor.

YouTube never forces you to watch the videos, True but Youtube and several other companies have designed their algorithms to keep you engaged with it for long duration of time. It is built by people who understand how the human brain works and how to take advantages of the shortcomings of the human brain. That is why so many people inspite of knowing that it is bad for you are still unable to get rid of their habits.

Sure people can quit watching those recommended videos anytime they want, but the feed is carefuly curated to make you keep watching and watching and potentially also altering your beliefs. That is I believe YouTube crosses the line. It has to remain responsible.

Apple has an App Store, they want to take unfair advantage by limiting competition. Third party have an App Store, they want to take advantage by using dark UI and other unethical practices. Every approach has its own advantages and disadvantages. No one is doing you a favor by providing you services, they want to earn money in return and usually more than the worth of services they put in. Choose which devil you want to liv with
