I was heavily into reinforcement learning around the turn of the century, and at the time, "Reinforcement Learning - An introduction" (Barto and Sutton) https://mitpress.mit.edu/books/reinforcement-learning was an absolute goldmine for me getting started. Not sure about the inspiring talks or whatnot, but I've been writing clojure/clojurescript (reagent, re-frame et al.) professionally for a couple of years and there's nothing I can't find that I need in a project. With simple js interoperability, native use of js/react components in reagent and ease of wrapping any vanilla js library, there really is nothing you can't do with clojurescript. You should take a closer look!

Leaving meditation out of this, I think the religious practices you're implying were basic human moral practices adopted _by_ religion, not the other way around.

I think many of us have deployed this graph in our own lives. I watch movies this way - watch more movies made by a director I like. Then watch movies by the people this director likes. Its a wonderful exploration.

Not everyone defaults to mainstream consumerism. Some of us just don't understand and cannot comprehend why others are such consumers. Keeping up with the Joneses? Why?

For my family at least, we require no deep inward analysis, fundamental questions about ourselves or changing of our lives. To sum up: this is just how we are.

We use our (no fee) credit card for everything we can and pay it off at the end of the month. Initially we did this to allow as much of our own money, for the longest possible time to sit in our mortgage. We've never paid a cent in charges, fees or penalties.

You can save incredible amounts over the years just by shifting the time at which your money sits where.

In the same vein, I have various org-mode files that I can switch buffer to whenever a thought needs to be noted. org-twbs outputs a nice html rendering with a couple of keystrokes.

Just doesn't compute. We live in what the author would call a high income neighbourhood but that's because we wanted to live walking/bike distance to everything, which turns out to be a pretty frugal way to live. We have an old beater for a car and have never had any intention of trying to keep up with the rest of the street/neighbourhood. We see a lot of fancy around the place but meh.
