Is he a freelancer and you a permanent employee? In my market it's quite normal for dev jobs to be ±5k perm and ±10k freelance. same exact job and skills

The noncompliance is not about taxation, its about not reporting income. Every year carries a penalty of 10k. All of this can be reset to 0 by bringing myself into compliance and then it will be pardoned, but from that point on i must comply every year. For now i have a "void all your debt card" which i'd rather keep in my sleeve until i really need it.

I am a US citizen, and was born abroad, and live in the EU. I've never lived in the US, nor worked there for a single day of my life. As such, I've never filed income in the states. I never got asked to do so, either. Due to IRS regulation i currently am in tax noncompliance and on the potential hook for what i guess something like 200K in penalties. I work in IT and my dream is to work in the bay area eventually, but I do not see the point of spending ~2k in paperwork to go through the "streamlined procedure" to bring myself into compliance, and then to be liable to report all my income a lifelong and potentially pay taxes in the US as well as i make more than 100k gross/yr. I don't want to move to the US forever, but maybe a few months here and there would be nice. The opportunity cost of doing that is astronomical, though, if i factor in a lifetime of added accounting costs and additional taxes, just for a few months of time spent in an area. Is there anything I can do to make this happen, but not have to hemorrage money? How can i legally work in the US without having to oblige myself to a lifetime of IRS bullshit? I already pay 52% taxes in my country of residence. Any non-US resident who was born abroad is pretty much in my same boat.

I had a Sony RX100III until last year. It is considered a top-of-the-line compact camera. Yet sony thinks it's cool to have an app store for a camera that costs somewhere in the 800USD ballpark to sell you "apps" for 4 dollars to allow you to add software features. There are a handful of apps in the whole marketplace, proving that this is indeed a poor business idea. The whole "you bought a camera for ±1k but can't afford 4$" discussion is unrelevant, i am just frustrated that Sony can't develop these features in house and supply them to their users as it should have done in the first place.

Software engineer here. I've been working on meaningless and emotionally unrewarding project for the last 2 years. Running burnout self-tests this morning yielded me the second most critical level, but still worthy of "act immediately" or "seek medical attention". I feel pretty down and my dayjob is meaningless to me.

I'm considering taking a sick leave till the end of my contract next month, and am wondering this:

If burnout is caused by lack of emotional reward and lack of giving a f*ck, should i pick up a sideproject I've committed to that i kind of care about instead, and think is interesting? Or ditch that as well and just take rest/go travel? Can i still work while recovering? What's a good workload?

Reminds me a lot about another thread on HN, where people in IT decided that the product of their IT work is so immaterial that they decide to pick up tangible hobbies to have something to show for their crafts. I remember reading quite a few people talking about woodworking or carpentry.

Personally I'm still in IT, but i have the strong feeling that if i were to leave this field I'd get into farming, as it is a line of work where scientific method and accurate measurements and methods yield to better results.

DHL from the US to Germany or Eurpope is absolutely rubbish. The problem is that you most likely used DHL Global Mail, which is not the same as DHL Express. DHL Global Mail delegates the shipment to the cheapest carrier possible, which in this case is USPS. Once they do the handover, you effectively lose all tracking ability.

That's more than one full month for a package that contained nothing more than a teeshirt. On top of that, the package never arrived at the final destination, and might be stuck in customs, for all i know. I never got a notification, and will actually contact DHL soon myself, because their service is absolutely laughable.

As a logistics company, they had one job. And they failed.
