Like the other comments mentioned your post misses of how transparent AWS has been in price reductions in the past.

More importantly, S3 now has several tiers of pricing depending on how frequently you access the data. So maybe lately they haven’t reduced the pricing of the top tier of S3 but they’ve made it significantly cheaper for other use cases of data. That is very contrary to the comments being made of innovators dilemma.

(I used to work at AWS but have no knowledge about pricing decisions)

This is very, very true. One of our customers described it really well “The nightmare of DevOps kept us from managing AWS directly, but with TinyStacks we can scale a billion+ requests a day in audio advertising leveraging the full power of AWS.”

What are you using for compute EKS and Fargate? We just helped someone switch from Heroku to AWS and they dropped their cloud costs by 67%. This is using ECS + EC2. Fargate is typically 2x more expensive.

Really great post. When I was at AWS, we did everything with IaC but that luxury of time and investment is not avail to many. We're working on this problem but ensuring that devs has a) full transparency what's going on, b) ability to evolve their arch and c) building right on your AWS account. We just moved someone from Heroku to AWS handling 1B requests/day at 1/4 of the cost.

have a bunch of AWS execs backing us too; they know this is a problem. Happy to chat more if you want to give it a spin: tinystacks.com

It's going to depend on the size of your code base and tests but when I was at AWS by the time we built and ran our test suite it was close to that time as well (30-45 min).

It's really interesting how many companies these days have a primary pricing model of build minutes.

If you are looking for a DIY solution for your CI, check out https://tinystacks.com. We have the fastest way to launch and operate your Docker app on AWS. In one click, we setup infra and an automated pipeline on your AWS. Uses ECS with Fargate. All setup for you with a control center for logs, env vars and scaling. No config nightmare.

Email me safeer at tinystacks.com and I can get you onboarded.

we're working on TinyStacks to solve this - we've built the fastest way to deploy and maintain your Docker app on AWS.

In one click, TinyStacks takes your app code on GitHub and spins up all the necessary infrastructure with a fully automated pipeline - all on your AWS. Just git push.

We just started onboarding a few customers on Fri and would love to onboard a few more. Email me: safeer@tinystacks.com

hey Zack, we have a prototype of this, we would love to have you try out (and anyone else). We just helped a couple customers migrate their Docker code repos from DigitalOcean to AWS and save $2K a month with our template. Gives you a CI/CD pipeline and deploys on ECS/Fargate.

He in no way implied that the UN should permit violence. This is completely false.

What Israel has done in Palestine is countless atrocities recognized by the UN every country in the world except the US.

I visited two years ago. Witnessed Israeli settlers live taking over Palestinian homes after they were kicked out by the police.

The systemic oppression of Palestinians by the Israeli government and supported by the US must end.

None taken. We're not focused on places or checkins. We're focused on hyperlocal things going on right now. Anyone can post something on mezz and it will broadcast to everyone locally.

It's more about the informal activities and events going on and letting anyone post. I don't think checkins are the solution for local.

What I've heard people say is that if you can get money, get it. (on your terms of course)

There's not much that Twitter has done in improving their product (been 5 years)..which is something I don't really understand too much.

I started a company with my dad ( a serial entrepreneur) and a couple other older people. The issue is that even though my dad has bootstrapped us a little till the end of the year, we are approaching the time that we need funding and since all the other co-founders need to support their family it is extremely difficult to manage the company because they don't have the flexibility and luxury.

So they can't take that many risks..
