I agree. My commute used to be 20min each way with car, but now I take the train which means my commute went up to 50min each way. When commuting with the car I somehow couldn't get myself around to reading or learning new things when arriving home, even though I had the 1h/day more time on my hands. I tried different things but none of them seemed to stick, so then I just thought to myself screw it, I'll take the train and the longer commute. Haven't regretted that decision one bit.

Couple of positive things I've noticed after taking the train. I'm more productive in the office as I get things rolling already on my commute (note that I don't do any work stuff on my commute) and if I've had productive day at the office I'm productive on the commute back, which leads I also get things done at home :) Also as the commute time is timeboxed I don't muck about so I'm focused on the task at hand. I usually switch between reading/coding/learning depending on the mood of the day.

Here in Finland we only got tiny selection of American Whiskey and that link pointed out that I still have so many American Whiskey left to experience :) And seeing as the Buffalo Trace is one of my favourite Whisky I think I'm not going to be disappointed when I have the chance to try out one of the more "rarer" ones. Only if our local stores had more American Whiskey selection (Eagle Rare 10yo is "rarest" pre-order bottle for 60$)..

I think all parties win in this, not just Stripe. Urrlib3 developer and users (new features and enhancments), and the whole FOSS community (if more and more companies start doing this). Also if the competition is fierce for the top talent, doing these kind of "support the community" acts, surely won't be seen as negative things for the company that does these things.

So kudos indeed for Stripe! Let's hope this comes "a thing"

With right combination you can do it. Targeted Keto/IF combination seems to be quite effective. Sheds fat while maintaining (or gaining) muscle mass and minimizing the impact of the diet to your strength levels. I've dropped +25kg BW while gaining +5kg of muscle mass and gaining/maintaining my big-lifts. I noticed that going from Stronglift 5x5 to Madcow really helped my recovery. Mostly as my body couldn't keep up with the heavy squatting and deadlifting too many times during the week.

Integrate all the good parts from VS to the "Unity-clone" and top it with nice indie-license. Bake modularity into so that you can build the game with feature-toggles and control the flags from the server. Ship the game to testers and enable one flag at a time to see when things crash (no need to wait x0min for the new build to finish). Make testing easier and integrate it with some build engine (jenkins, TFS), enable REST api so you can get all the game element information through it. Those features would make the life, of an test automation engineer, a walk in the park :)

I do agree that you or your (extended) network don't know all the people worth knowing as there are always gems in random pool of people, but I think the odds are a bit better, at least from my own experience, finding them through the people in your network. How it usually pans out is that you ask your network "we look someone to do X, does anyone know anyone" and they ask their network and the loop continues until a name or a lead to a name comes up.

As an non-US citizen/resident this is pretty fasinating insight to the US justice system! One thing comes to mind though. If I'm to travel to US and enter US soil, am I covered by the Bill of Rights? Ofc I haven't had any problems while visiting US but just curious how these things pan out for non-citizen/resident.

I read it when I started my first "real" job. Back then it was really influential and had tons of interesting stuff. I usually recommend it to summer-trainees to put on their read-list (not as the first book to read though). Like many have already pointed out that participating in the HN gets you the same information :) So don't sweat it too much, you already know that stuff.

One of the side effects, is that you're really susceptible to alcohol. One beer, and I'd be really feeling it. Whereas before, I could drink 3 without really noticing. After I stopped, my tolerance was still pretty low, though it's fine now. I don't know if the low tolerance afterwards could be the diet specifically, or just whether I'd not really drank in 4 months.

After going Keto/IF my alcohol tolerance has gone through the roofs to a point that I really don't want to get wasted anymore (not that I did it that often). Around 10 beers used to get me in a great buzz, but now after a 0.7 litre bottle of whisky I could still easily get into a bar and continue drinking. But luckily there is something going in the back of your head, that "maybe this is way too much already, lets call it a day". And top of that, the day after, I seem to have no hangover at all. Now a days, if I go out with friends I usually take one or two servings of some good quality whisky and leave it at that.

I agree, I think we really need someone who will try to make something new and gain small % of the markets so that ios/android will also have to start innovating something cool again. That said, I've personally been burned before by the n900 and N9 which were pretty much "dead on arrival", so I'm a bit reluctant to just buy the Jolla device. Even though the company behind the device is totally different.

I think I'll have to give my iphone5 to my mom and in return take her N9 and install the Sailfish OS to it, just to get the feel of the OS in daily use.

There is more than six billion people living in Earth, and I bet that there is at least one person getting something valuable out of ones writing. It doesn't matter if it is not 'novel or unique' as long as it is "out there" :)

And that you can actually communicate via email/twitter/g+ with the creators or the core developers of those languages and expect to even get an answer is pretty awesome as well :)

I've been playing around with slime, but it is always the problem for coming up with some interesting project. The common-lisp support (for iPython) seems like interesting challenge to try (and fail).

I have pretty much the same mentality and I Have to agree that it just works. It doesn't matter what I have on my mind before going to the gym as it is soon replaced by "I have to squat 2.5kg more than the last time?!".

Agree. I do like the general idea behind Mir. Canonical is at least trying to get the the "Linux-desktop" thing happening. If that means re-inventing the wheel, then go ahead. If they hit home with this, it will benefit us all Linux users.

Sadly, I think mostly in the BigCorp world, you always have to take time aside to learn new stuff (or read HN etc). Everybody knows that no one works 8h/day doing real work. Sometimes taking time for learning is frowned upon (the "bad companies" out there) but mostly it is up to you to take the time.

I've never heard any of my (ex) bosses in BigCorp say that taking time from daily work to learn is not permitted. Of course it would be cool to have the 20% stated by the management, but I don't see that happening. Mostly they leave it up to you to take the 20% from the daily work.

I do agree. As a Google-talk/Gmail/Dropbox user, the short-term countermesure might be to encrypt all data [1].But ultimately the long-term goal should be to find an alternative to those services (which is/will be quite hard).

I think there is only one way to know, try :) And then just keep trying until you succeed.

But I think it is good idea to first talk with the maintainers. At least if you plan on making a 'major' refactoring to the existing code. Start small and continue from there.

Anyone has a good recommendation on "must see" video from pycon? Most of them look quite interesting (python at netflix, automated testing, Guido's keynote etc.) but if someone has any suggestions please let me know :)

As a Finn I don't hold my breath over that the the vote, if it gets to a point parliament can vote on it (which I hope it does), will make a difference. Most likely it will be shot down by the Government parties as the copyright holders lobby-machine has quite strong influence. To make matters worst, most of the parties MPs vote what the party says them to vote regardless what the individual MP seems to be thinking.

Don't get me wrong, of course I want that the vote will pass, but I'll rather see the vote being 'shot down' than not have it at all. At least it will generate (more) discussion. We can always start the process over until we can get a positive outcome.

Now that I think this more, the timing might actually be just right for this to make a real impact as the the 9-year old girls confiscated Winnie The Pooh laptop case should still be fresh in peoples memories..

I've got a Belkin N+ router and boy is it bad. Have to restart it every two days to get to the maximum download speeds. Wlan(s) just drop at some point during the day and have to restart the whole thing. Argh.

Googling just now it seems that you can push the dd-wrt firmware onto it though. But I hope this move to buy syslink will bring something more to the table.
