Me too! In my case postfix locked up and stopped sending mail there was a massive queue. I checked the logs and saw the same second twice and that's when I learned about leap seconds. Since then I have a reminder in my calendar every 6 months to check if ones been announced. Thankfully we've only had two.

I gave it the job of modifying a fairly simple regex replacement and it took a while over 5 minutes, claude failed on the same prompt (which surprised me), codex did a similar job but faster. So all in all not bad!

Generally expect issues for the rest of the day, AWS will recover slowly, then anyone that relies on AWS will recovery slowly. All the background jobs which are stuck will need processing.

Same. I automatically assume that all information I send to any organisation will end up on the Internet sooner or later be it by accident or sold to some shady third party.

Same thing happened to me over 20 years ago back then it was common to get domain hosting email all from one provider. They hiked up the price to something extortionate and changed the owner details on the domain to themselves cost me a fair penny to get that back from then on I kept my domain email and hosting all separate and stuck with what are hopefully more reputable providers. And of course these days if it happened I'd go straight to legal action something that young me didn't think of.

I use perl for the same reasons. The few dynamic scripts that I need I want to write and forget them for years. Odds are with perl they'll still work 20 years from now.

I'm fond of digikam https://www.digikam.org/ it's simple enough for most users and has complex features for more advanced users its open source cross platform and doesn't do some weird rearranging of files so you can still use your file browser too.

When I did my degree many moons ago in three UK I got a student loan like many people. The loan company sends the money directly to the university not the student. Weirdly though when I did my masters they sent the money to me.

I use both hosted and self hosted sentry. I prefer hosted it's less to manage but self hosted isn't too awful as long as you can budget the resources. If you just want the team sentry plan it's going to be cheaper to use hosted. I would only self host if you had to for legal/compliance reasons. In the many years I've been managing sentry we've only had it truly crap out once and that was an upgrade from 9 to their new date versioning basically the whole hosted method changed and it was just easier to start over from scratch.

This reminds me of a few years ago when I was doing my MSc our group was learning how to work one of the remote telescopes and we were asked to point it at the brightest object found by Gaia that week and it turned out to be a supernova. Anyone got any recommendations on who to port to?

Well now I've given up, they've told me I need to buy a new mainboard because it's "out of warranty" which is crap since I've been complaining about it since I bought it.

I like the concept of being able to upgrade the mainboard, the problem I have is that the support needs to come with it. I've had a framework 13" intel 13th gen since September 2023 and it's "mostly" ok. There's a weird battery charging issue where it discharged while plugged in which I raised shortly after getting it and it's still there I've been told to wait for a response. That one I can live with. But for the past few months the CPU gets stuck at 400Mhz and I have to boot into the BIOS and disconnect the battery and power cable to get it to clear which isn't great when I'm in the middle of something important. Support have been prompt and polite but it's been like getting blood out of a stone getting somewhere, from previous experience with other manufacturers it would have been RMA'd by now. I'm not writing them off yet but I'm not filled with confidence.

On the plus side I'm hoping that it's the existence of framework that have convinced lenovo to stop soldering components in their new laptops, that's what put me off buying one and why I went with a framework.
