eigenvectors were the only tough part of the linear algebra course i took, i think that's b/c it's quite a bit to learn before you start seeing the point of it. methods like PCA are rely heavily on eigendecompositon and allow you to reduce the dimensions of data...this is useful in all sorts of ways like compression for instance (e.g. getting rid of the dimensions that aren't very meaningful).

i saw a news story the other night about a graduation ceremony at northeastern was prohibiting congratulatory handshakes b/c of fear of swine flu. This speaks to the cowardliness learned men and women. They are the most sniveling cowardly and pathetic people on this planet. The students at the ceremony should have all held hands and mocked the professors/administrator. What buffoons!

Women already get enough special treatment. If you register for a computer forum with a female avatar, the amount of attention you get and rapidity with which your questions get answered is inordinate.

Start offering free weekly classes on programming at your local starbucks. Make it something real general like homepages for small business. Or facebook profiles, crap like that. Then if somebody wants more substantial private help or consultation you can charge them for it.

6 years ago I was at a crossroads in my life...wondering if I should pursue a career in IT. Ultimately, I decided not to, since I realized that anybody anywhere in the world could learn all the programing and development skills needed to be an IT professional. Instead, I went into the health sciences and now have a shot at a decent career. I still love tech and am trying to find the time to learn LISP, hopefully I can leverage that into a new practical application in my field. I completely empathize with the frustration the author of this craigslist posting has. Unfortunately, there are so many poor and intelligent people around the world who are willing to work their butts off for relatively little. US citizens who work in tech would be helped out if the government stopped renewing H1-B Visas. It is not fair to the tech workers here to compete with third world labor. And it is not fair to developing nations who lose their biggest talents.

Who wants to hear that old fool blathering...thank god I don't live in Cuba. Fidel blathering away 24/7 b/c he has so much wisdom for you to learn. Fucking narcissitic self-indulgent ego-maniacal idiot.

I was asking this at my doctors office yesterday. I'm sure the arcane situation is due to the required confidentiality needed with patient data. Average people (secretaries, receptionist) can not be trusted to keep digital data secure, given the cleverness of social engineering. Moreover, public perception of data insecurity is well established. So, you would need a very secure system and to convince the public.
