Some, but sarcopenia caused by rapid weight loss is a well known phenomenon. I think the tie to ozempic is a little overblown, but is is a real issue.

In a “traditional” weight loss strategy, you paired calorie deficit with an increase in physical activity (cardio, resistance training, etc). This increased physical activity helped protect you from muscle loss (your body tended to recognize that muscle was important so it burned fat at a higher rate)

With ozempic, people can lose weight without changing their sedentary lifestyle. Since your muscles are not needed, your body is free to grab energy from wherever it can. In some studies, almost half of weight loss can come from lean tissue.

Is it better to for an obese person to lose weight vs not lose weight? Absolutely. But it would be even better if they also changed their lifestyle to protect their muscle mass.

Netflix does offer to give servers to ISPs to put in their datacenters. So if your ISP is seeing congestion on the IX links, it is entirely possible that Netflix still works fine (because the traffic doesn’t leave the ISP and is therefore not hitting the congestion). But that is not a “fast lane”

But it is apples fault that they let the alternatives stagnate and refuse (until recently) things like RCS that would make SMS suck less.

It is clear that Apple considers iMessage a significant network effect and is not interested in having feature parity between iOS and non-iOS

250k is conservative for employee cost. A staff engineer at Google can reach 1 MM total comp. And add in all the overhead a company has (real estate, free food, perks, taxes, etc)

500k-700k is a little more realistic. 1500 employees across all domains (engineering, marketing, product management, customer service, etc) isn’t a huge number

It is consistent when the apps are consistent.

But it will not appear if the app opens the webpage as its own View (instead of opening Safari). In that case, there is no button and the user has to hunt for how to go back. And the user has no way of knowing whether an app will open Safari or will open the webpage itself.

iOS requires users to build muscle memory in learning how to use each app. Android requires users to maintain a back stack in their head to remember what came before. Switching between the two is very jarring.

Typically, it means that if you put the TV in a dark room, it is calibrated to the same specifications that the monitors used in post-production used. Therefore, it is what the directors "intended" the video to look like since they were looking at the monitors (in a dark room).

However, if your room has even a little light in it, the settings would make the TV too dark.

A few reasons I like them: 1. The goal is to come up with a workable solution - not to try to fold your brain inside out to optimize them like leetcode. They feel a little more "real-world" (though still firmly in the domain of programming puzzle) 2. There is a community that all solve them at once. At my company, we have a leaderboard and a Slack channel discussing them every day. And then there is the Reddit and everything else that makes it feel more "fun" 3. They are bound (only 1 problem a day). Some days are longer, but I don't get overwhelmed like I do with leetcode where you can lose hours just churning through problems.

IMO, they are a fun community programming puzzle tradition. I would still turn to leetcode for interview practice. But AoC is awesome for me when I don't want to grind leetcode for some interview I don't want right now.

I don't understand how opening iMessage would sell existing iMessage data to anyone?

Today, if an iPhone user sends a message to an Android user, that message is sent via SMS. If Google wanted, it could already scrape the message. What would change if the protocol was open and the message was sent to the Android device using iMessage?

There is no expectation for Apple to give Google read/write access to the iMessage database (not that it exists, but still). What is the downside of users being able to interoperate and use the protocol?

Non-cynically, it probably does introduce some issues in these legacy telecom systems.

For example, if you run out of data for a month, many carriers will continue giving you access to the internet APN, but then block access to "external" websites. This is so you can easily open your browser and "top up" on data to continue using your device.

Or the usage of HTTP (not HTTPS) was relatively common back when I was in the space (7-10 years ago). There wasn't a need to use HTTP because the carrier was in full control of the pipe between the device and the server. Adding in a VPN that somehow tries to intercept that traffic (that was supposed to exist entirely within the telecom) is not going to work.

I would be willing to pay $10 if the solution wasn't so hacky... Maintaining a system solely to run unsupported software (in a way that I would have to imagine is against ToS somewhere) is just too risky to handle a critical piece of my communication. I can't drop a message - especially if my excuse for dropping messages is "the laptop in the corner of my closet had to install a security update and restarted on me"

It is solved if phones use RCS. RCS allows many of the features you love in iMessage - e2e encryption, typing indicators, large files, delivery receipts, reactions, etc. And it is all standards-based and backed by the carriers.

Android phones do support RCS. Apple will not implement it. Apple will only support the bare minimum of SMS/MMS and then people wonder why it doesn't work well.

Carriers have worked to improve messaging. And Apple won't work with them, preferring to make "green bubble" a horrible experience. People should be outraged that Apple is able to e2e encrypt their chats but refuses to implement the standards.

Yes. I prefer Android phones, but I don't want my choice of phone to impact the communication between my friends and family.

The only reason I consider getting an iPhone is for iMessage. I would gladly pay a monthly fee so I could use the phone I want AND communicate freely with the people in my social circles.

That is a strawman argument. Of course WebView should update. The question is whether the structure of incentives contributed to a risky release.

If you "play the game", an error budget causes your releases to become riskier and riskier as the budget grows. This is optimal because a riskier release allows you to accelerate changes, allowing you to hit other OKR.

The issue is that this will eventually cause very risky releases (where you would slow down otherwise). In a sense, an error budget does eventually become "amount of intentionally deployed errors" because you are incentivized to increase risk until an error does appear.

Assuming you are correct, is there a way to reset expectations without blowing up the department? Not that we shouldn't be striving to be ethical, but it is clear that Google doesn't like the direction the team is heading.

If Google is truly interested in the thorny issues of making AI as ethical as possible, can it do so without tackling the (seemingly insurmountable) issue of social ethics? And if not, do we just throw in the towel and cross our fingers that AI doesn't hurt us too much?
