Don’t reset to 30s for each word. Just add 30s (or 20s). So if I am fast in the early rounds, I am rewarded in later rounds by having 1:43 to work on a word I am completely stuck on.

I bought the $21.99 Chinese replacement “Sennheiser” pads from Amazon. Straightforward to replace (though not trivial). Very comfortable. My headset feels as good as new.

That’s also a great example. I’m gonna write these down so I can illustrate tones to my native English speaking friends.

You can also say “I DON’T KNOW!” in a 1-1-4 tone sequence.

For example, "uh-oh" has a high-low pitch. If you say it wrong it sounds very strange. "Uh-huh" to show understanding goes low-high. Again, if you reverse it it sounds unusual.

Wow… Thanks for making it clear that English also has tones! I hadn’t thought of it this way before. “Uh-huh” sounds similar to Mandarin tones 3 & 2. “Uh-oh” is similar to Cantonese tones 1 & 3.

I’m wondering if we can find good examples to teach the Mandarin tones. I think two or three syllable words are best because it illustrates the contour of the tones.

Markdown in javadoc is at least 7/10 for me. Improves comment readability for humans while allowing formatted javadocs.

I use git icdiff (a plugin) in my terminal. I use Zed and VSCode GUI editors, but I don’t care to use their git tools. Command line git is fine.

People paying more for Waymo doesn’t surprise me. I also once called for a comfort car, but it was a filthy Lexus. I’d much rather ride in a clean and well maintained Corolla.

I pay more for Waymo and I’m happy to do it (as long as Waymo can detect when its interior is dirty so it can return itself to home base for cleaning.) I don’t have to sit awkwardly in a car with another guy who may drive in a way that annoys me. I can talk on my phone or with my family without having a random person listen in.

I’m a huge fan of Hooktheory, and have bought all their books and products. Thumbs up!

Hey! I've played it for a while now (and haven't even followed any Reddit / YouTube guides yet).

Early game: Get a joker that gives you a big mult (e.g., Half Joker w/ +20 Mult for small hands). This will allow you to survive while you build out your points engine. (You can survive with flushes in the early game, but it can get harder to win with flush later, due to Bosses, unless you have flush friendly Jokers and a large hand size.)

Mid game: Generate $$$ so you can buy planets and tarot cards. Once you're happy with your jokers, you want to level up the hands that work well with those Jokers. Try easier hands like Two Pair or Pair or High Card. (Assuming you can generate enough cash to level up those hands.)

Tip: Blue Seals are helpful!

To Win: Look for jokers that get you increasingly higher +mult or xmult for things you'll do anyways. There are jokers that increase mult for using tarot cards, or jokers that increase xmult for adding new cards to your deck.

Tip: Steel cards are also awesome.

Tip: If you have an xmult joker, move it to the right side, as jokers trigger from left to right. You want to multiply after you add!

Disclaimer: I have not beaten ante 11 yet. I can get a couple million points with my strategy, but 7+ million is too difficult. I don't see an easy path to naneinf (not a typo). I guess I'll need to give up and watch some YouTube guides as some point.

I feel like I win about 50% or more of my games on regular white stake difficulty. I've won some red stakes, but I don't really feel a need to make the game much harder. I think if I played it safe I could win 75% or more of my games on white stake. The reason my win rate on base difficulty is lower is because I like to try weird strategies with different jokers.

The amazing thing about Balatro is.... there are many many different paths to a victory. Everyone has their own favorite joker, and it might all be different.

For a long time, I liked two pair hands the most. Now most of my games use pair or high card. I find it too difficult to get to ante 9+ with a 5-card strategy. (4-card flushes are OK.)

I have known about this game for a while. I have never bought it because I fear for my productivity.

Maybe it’s a comfort game for you. But it’s an addiction for me. I need to stop, so I can find something else to get addicted to.

Don’t you need to season carbon steel cookware?

Or do you perform a quick season on the cooktop right before frying / searing? In that case, you could also use stainless steel cookware, which is even less maintenance than carbon steel.

Awesome project. What are you planning for text and font support? Some graphics engines don’t support all the ways you might want to display text. Will we be able to load OTF or WOFF2 files and display arbitrary strings? :-)

They should put this review on their repo README. It’s making me want to play it. But it’s also making me scared to play it.

I’ve worked in both Godot and React Native. I wouldn’t say you are eliminating any complexity.... You are just trading one UI system for another. UI by its nature is complex and requires a lot of “code”. In the Godot case you might be doing less coding in the “typing letters on a keyboard” way, but you still need to figure out the UI controls and fiddle with the settings in the properties panel until you get it juuuust right. The final product is still saved as code, in tscn scene files.

I swear my 75 year old mom doesn’t care about the limitations of SMS. White text on a bright green background is tough to read and straining on the eyes. Luckily it is only her own texts that are colored that way (even though she is on iPhone).

We switched to using FB messenger because it’s easier to use and read for everyone in our family.

It’s as if I’m writing with yellow highlighter on white paper. Painful.

Worse, it changes the color of (gasp) the iPhone owner’s outgoing messages. So as an android user, you’re messing up MY texts and ruining MY perception of myself. Ugh.

Yes, humans are stupid. But it would be nice if Apple let me customize the colors in my app. I did just pay them over $2K for new phones for my wife and me.

People keep telling me this as an excuse but the original color scheme was more pleasing to the eye. The current color scheme is painful to the eyes. I know because I see the ugly green bubbles on my messages app on my iPhone. I also have an iPhone 3 in a drawer that sadly no longer works.

You know you wouldn’t want to swap the green and blue bubbles.
