I really really wish, there was a VR game/app where I can transport myself to different places/times in the past and just walk around to get the texture and feel for what it felt like living in that time.
Walking around a Roman town, hearing what people talked like, what they wore, what technology was around, what did they do most of the day.
Someone please make it real.

I set up WireGuard server for my family back in Russia in the first days of the war and since then provided VPN access to a few more families. It’s been a lot more stable than relying on popular VPN providers who get banned one after another.
Any advice on alternatives to WireGuard, if Russian gov manages to ban it on protocol level with DPI?

Today Databricks announced [0] 6b parameter model from EleutherAI finetuned on Alpaca dataset. According to their CEO[1], training took 3 hours, and costed $30. They didn't release any details on how it was trained, but likely with LoRa.

IIRC Medium was similarly funded with VC, and founders specifically decided not to fund it themselves and treated external capital as an accountability mechanism.

Imagine walking around in ancient Mayan, Egyptian cities hearing speech that is close enough to what people spoke at that time, witnessing day to day life thousands of years ago.
Self hosting can also be a great option to protect against authoritarian regimes. After my family’s VPN was banned in Russia a few weeks ago, it took me an hour to set up Wireguard server with Algo VPN on digital ocean. Now I’m supporting uncensored internet access for 3 families back home, while Russian authorities playing cat and mouse games with popular VPN providers.

A month ago, almost everyone in my family received "unknown accessory detected with you" alert on our iPhones. It was scary, and we spent hours looking for an Airtag in every crevice of the car, and checking every bag we had. Couldn't find anything.
After extensive googling, we found numerous reports online about AirPods Pro most likely having a bug alerting their owners about "unknown accessory". If it's true, and firmware had a bug, Apple was probably in a weird position of not being able to publicly acknowledge it, to avoid potentially giving a false sense of security to folks who actually had the real alerts.
For us the alert never reoccured, and FindMy was erroring out when we clicked on "get more info about the device", so most likely it was a bug.

Years ago at green tech college hackathon my team built a captcha that requires users to correctly sort trash into recycling, compost and non-recyclable bins. Anything little bit more fun is better than mind numbing selecting traffic lights, boats and trains.
In 2020 my friend and I have spent months building a self driving scrubber, the machine janitors use to clean large hard floors. As we were building navigation stack and SLAM, I always was fascinated of possibly using neural networks in some capacity to improve current state of art. Clearly many insects, including flies use very small natural compute to keep track of where they are in space.
The best part was for us was that after wrangling with their native API, we decided to go with one of the private companies that provide sane API wrapper on top of PACER. It's kinda crazy that there is a small industry of companies who make government api better. You can see some of these services by googling "bankruptcy monitoring".
This is great news. I had to implement PACER integration back in my days at Gusto for compliance and the pricing among many other things was very annoying to work with. The pricing is based on "number of pages" returned, which means that when you submit a query you don't know exactly how it will cost you ahead of time.
