Ah well.. i would look at it as yet another explaination (excuse) for failure!

Completely agree!
Interesting comparision between men and bulls - "both enjoy runs of growing confidence as they beat off rivals. Each time they win a fight, they get more aggressive, taking bigger risks until they lose." But, is it not true for all young achievers... irrespective of the gender?
Banner advertisments are possibly one of the few rich content medium options that marketers can use to communicate the benefits of the product. While the proportion of banner advertisement has gone down from 58% in 1998 to 22% in 2006, how far do you think can it fall? If not banner ads, then what??
This reminds me of the article that i read on 'Common Sense in Business'. While most of the times, people say that marketing is all about common sense, time and again Apple has been sailing in the direction opposite to the wind, doing things that defy common sense, and creating newer and newer success models! Be it, launching better iPod to kill the existing ones or opting for a no subsidy model with AT&T.
We have been using Facebook in our interactive campaigns... and it has been consistently performing well on the post-clicks. And since, this is one of the few sites that offers CPC model, it turns out to be quite cost-effective at the end of the day. So, it still makes a lot of sense to include Facebook in the campaign portfolio (if we look at it from a slightly different angle).
We have tasted higher degrees of success when we tried using Facebook for Branded Application. It has been great channel for promoting advocacy. I guess the most critical success factor is how well we can ingrain the marketing message with the essence of the platform!

Quite an interesting analysis... The explaination on revenue differences squaring off after a couple of years reflects the legacy that Oktoberfest has created...Incredible phenomenon that brings millions of people from diverse nationalities and cultures together year after year… (attended Oktoberfest in Hong Kong yesterday... but,the spirit of Munich is unparallel!!)
All the best to all the applicants...and to YC for the tough week ahead! :P
