The whole domain registration system is a very complex and messy area to work with, both from a development as an enduser perspective. I speak from experience working at a hosting company implementing domain registrations directly with the registry systems.

It's a incomprehensible mishmash of tld's implementing different methods of registering, renewing, restoring, domains. Some require ID verification before registrations, some have a quarantine of 1 week, other of 4 weeks, some no quarantine. Some domains need to be renewed before expiry, some can still be used 2 weeks after expiry, some domains allow transfers and trades, others don't or do under strict circumstances. Some require transfer codes, others don't. Some transfer codes are valid for 1 week, some are valid for longer.

There is no decent standarization on the technical level when it comes to managing domain registrations. There is the EPP protocol but almost none of the registries implement a standardized way of registering domains each implementing a mess of extensions to suit their bureaucratic needs.

ICANN introducing over 1.2k new gTLD's some time ago also didn't help along with the introcution of domains containing non standard latin characters and the puny-code implementation there (eg: café.com is actually listed as xn--caf-dma.com)

I'm not trying to defend domain.com who obviously failed to deliver on the basics of decent support, but things like this (issues between domain vendor and registry) happen more than most of us like to admit.

I can second that zoom.us is a very good alternative ... it's not really a chat application but for multiuser confcalls or video calls it's miles ahead of the competition like gotomeetings or skype.

I think you have some things mixed up, Bootstrap is a front-end layout framework built with a CSS preprocessor, in this case SASS. It's got nothing to do with backend.

You are asking if you can use a different preprocessor, for which the answer is 'no'.

I've had a love/hate relationship with evernote since forever. The idea of storing everything in evernote really appeals to me (invoices, receipts, warranty, contracts, ...) but yet scares me too since there are wild stories of evernote just loosing stuff.

On the other hand for simple note taking evernote really sucks, it's too cluttered and it's editor is subpar.

A few years ago I was an avid springpad user before they shut down, but they suffered from the same issues: too bloated, not really good editor. But it worked beter for me than evernote.

To me it feels like evernote tries to solve 2 separate problems: taking simple and small notes, archiving and indexing important documents. Unfortunately it fails at both for me :(

It's not necessarily the color or the animations, I feel the page as a whole doesn't do a great job of communicating what the actual product is/does.

Nice fonts and icons but it fails to bring across the message. A little more text and some screenshots would have gone a long way imho.

I for one wouldn't mind skipping the daily traffic jams and flying to a regional airport instead of sitting in my car 1h30m twice a day. Ofcourse everything depends on the actual location of the airport but I can imagine for some people this might save them some time.

Then again if everybody will start to use flying cars, we'll have traffic jams towards the airport and a whole slew of other logistical problems. Imho this will never become mainstream but has the potential to attract a small number of users.

The author does a really shitty job of pointing out the differences between Bootstrap/Foundation and SemanticUI but if you browse through the documentation and examples it becomes clear that this framework has several features, components and modules that neither bootstrap or foundation have like dimmers, 3D transforms (shape), equal height columns, dividers, validation, ...

It features a lot of UI patterns that are pretty hard to pull of with bootstrap alone and that imho makes it worth it.

I'm not yet convinced by the actualy class name semantics, it might be a learning curve though. And i absolutely hate the button-divs ... bootstrap does a way beter job at keeping html semantics for buttons.

That being said, this seems like serious competition for bootstrap and foundation. I'm curious for the final release.

It does indeed look a little depressed when you google for puffin picture but none the less it's a beautiful creature, makes for a good and recognisable logo.

As an avid PHP user I'm afraid the remaining 1/3rd is truth, the article really is rather biased and in some places not really factual but I'm the last person to deny PHP can improve immensely in some area's.

I once went to a PHP uncon some years ago where 2 members of the php core/extensions team were present, when we got the chance to ask them questions I popped the question "Why doesn't php take the opportunity to fix a lot of the function naming issues, the incosistent argument order, etc ... when releasing the next major version" and their reply was that they don't want to break backwards compatibilty too much. That's plain BS imho. Any non-dot release can break backwards compatibility, especially if it moves the language forward.

I sure hope that it's gonna accelerate a solution to the one big problem I have with AppFog ... lack of persisent storage. According to the roadmap it should have high priority but it's been a while since I heard anything about it.

The fact that it's static should mean you can host it on any platform that hosts static files. The technology only kicks in when you are writing blogposts and (re)generating your static files before you sync/upload them to your host.

There has actually been a pretty active proposal on area51.stackexchange.com for a dedicated Zend Framework stackexchange site but it got rejected (and deleted it seems) in favor of just using stackoverflow and tagging the questions zend-framework.

Well it's all just a mater of personal taste but tbh ... when someone says "GPS. I don't use it, even in a car. I'm old-school as I like printed maps." I don't find it that surprising he has no trouble letting stuff like gmail, google maps and google search go.

It can be done, but for some it's easier as for others.
