It's a very unique capability that only HiFi has - thanks!

Hi - I'm one of the founders of Tangram Vision here. It's a good question. This sensor in particular is focused on robotics, where the capabilities of 3D sensors are fairly different from what you'd find on an iPhone. In the case of HiFi, the leaps are in resolution (much higher than other depth sensors for robots), AI compute (about 5x the amount of the next competitor), and ease of integration with a robotic platform.

We think we've raised the bar for 3D sensors for robots: more resolution (1.6MP depth), more AI compute (8 TOPS + 8GB onboard memory), and more onboard dev tools (it self calibrates).

Those are astute observations. There are some sensors that have been considered for AV applications that use these principles - for instance, gated short wave infrared, or FMCW LiDAR. For now, though, they still remain relatively uncommon.

Their renders for the next generation certainly show a much more streamlined design.

This is sad, yet also inevitable given so many hurdles facing Fry's.

The old mail vans are effectively Chevy S10 pickup chassis with the postal van body on top. Apparently, they are prone to catch on fire randomly.

Despite Apple’s acquisition of PrimeSense, we're on track to fulfill all existing Structure Sensor demand and beyond. Interruptions are possible if we have supply chain issues, but we're optimistic that we'll be able to deliver Structure Sensors for the foreseeable future.

As of now, you can use OpenNI with the Structure Sensor on any platforms currently supported by OpenNI. We’ve also forked OpenNI on GitHub (along with many others who have done the same) to make sure it remains available after April 23rd.

For those who don’t want to compile code, we’ll also host binaries at http://structure.io/developers for OS X and potentially other platforms.

We’re working on creating new open source Structure Sensor drivers for Android, Linux, Windows and OS X (these are not based on OpenNI at all). Let us know if you’d like to contribute to that effort by sending us an email at structure >at< occipital.com.

Keep in mind that the discontinuation of active maintenance for OpenNI does not affect the Structure Sensor for iOS at all because on iOS, we use Structure SDK, not OpenNI.

This looks like incredible core technology for mobile devices. I'm guessing it is structured light like the Kinect?

In my own personal experience, I've found that there seems to be a cultural difference between the two locations. The nexus of enterprise/SAAS seems to be firmly seated in the Peninsula, while consumer/apps is in SF. That's not a universal rule, but seems to be the predominating trend amongst the type of companies in each general area.

This is a simple analogy that fits well within a business context. Great post!
