Reminds me of the Eye-Fi SD cards [0] that would store photos taken with your camera and then allow you to wirelessly over your network download photos from the camera, and later would do geotagging based on visible wifi networks. 20 years ago it felt like the future.
You can. It’s a single checkbox on the printer UI that toggles between cloud control or local LAN control.
I’ll take the more positive angle that i appreciate sing a more diversified supply chain, no matter how small the change. You can’t lift and shift production off the entire widget overnight.
Start with the less consequential components to get the flywheel running and continue adding more production. Little manufacturing successes have the ability to snowball into bigger ones.
The “under god” part always rubbed me wrong. I was surprised to learn it was added relatively recently in 1954. I wish we could go back to the prior one.
That's my challenge in Colorado.
I installed a modest solar system (5kwh) in 2024 and was incredibly happy with the results. On any given 24 hour period it'd offset 40% of my electricity consumption (EV, hot tub being the big loads).
Last year I installed a cold climate heat pump. I'm incredibly happy with the switch from gas as my primary heat source. The solar now only covers ~15-20% of my consumption in winter.
So my solution this year will be to add more solar. In the two years since I installed mine prices have halved. I'm fortunate enough to be able to do a DIY install, properly permitted and inspected, for about $350/400w panel once you factor in inverters, mounts, etc.
It's an amazing time for affordable energy.
I just finished a road trip from Colorado to SoCal by EV and this was the first trip where I didn’t once need an app to start charging. It was a nice change from my last one. Rivian’s network has been amazing now that non Rivian EVs can use it, and Ionna has appeared with delightfully retro futuristic looking equipment that doesn’t even have a backing app - just payment and go.
I don't know answers to all of yours but the couple I do know...
- The fixed DHCP addresses are found under Client Devices. Click the Globe icon above the search box (To the right of the binoculars) to get the DHCP blade. All fixed reservations are listed, even for offline devices.
-For ACLs I've had great success with their new object based model that I believe came in Network 9.3. Settings > Policy Engine > Objects
I'm curious which devices you're using for both the gateway and switching equipment.
I started looking at that to boost my roof solar capacity. It looks like it’s permitted by code where I’m at and now the only thing I’m unsure about is vandalism since my property is against a busy street. Seems like a great idea though.

Tesla windows are dual pane laminated glass now for acoustic reasons. Really great at keeping noise down, really difficult to break through.
Again, politics aside, I just find the lineup boring. Every model outside the Cybertruck looks like a ten year old car. Even the refresh of the model Y is still reskinning a design language started with the Model S, but with any interesting soul stripped out to reduce cost.
The nerd in me loves the technology, particularly behind the scenes features of the Cybertruck like 48v architecture. In the end I want to drive something that feels like it has a soul and substance. Teslas lineup right now is not that.
For those with Midea manufactured units (They white label so many brands) a great turnkey option is this dongle made by SMLight (1) that comes preloaded with ESPHome.

Oddly bummed to see it fail. It was pretty fascinating to see during the day, how insanely bright the top of the tower was.
It had lots of flaws (environmental impact and animal life). Ultimately technology moved ahead of its capabilities.

Surprisingly well written and just detailed enough to not leaving wanting more or overwhelmed. I never really got in to ANT+ land with cycling but the couple things I tried I appreciated how easily they paired up. Bluetooth feels like the obvious next place but with so much momentum behind ANT+ I wonder how long this transition will take.
Denver as well. A handful of the florida locations have their second home here. It’s an interesting crowd compared to a bar. Social and very chill.

If the feature relies on other services, such as manufacturers mapping roads, then I can support some subscription for ongoing maintenance.
I certainly didn’t. I remember getting cash as a young child, thinking with $20 I was “rich”, and rapidly blowing it on Sim City.
I only understood the value of money once I both had a bank account and a job that funded it.
I’m more curious about what change was introduced that omitted the label from a small number of packages.

I just self installed a 5.5kw system in Colorado. Based on quotes I got from installers the DIY approach saved me about $10k USD which is insane for what was a weekend of labor for two people. Permitting want that onerous coming in knowing little, and I’d expect professional installers to have this process locked down tightly.
My theory about the high installer prices (in the US) is the market is distorted right now by tax credits enabling installers to charge more, knowing the customer likely will qualify for a larger credit come tax time.

I think they’re a nice half step where it keeps me from driving and taking up parking space at the destination. Bus routes help but don’t service original/destination as specifically as a taxi.
Accordingly, the taxi costs significantly more than a bus.
I’ll happily take a bus or rail for commuting where I know what to expect for service reliability and connection times.
If I’m doing a one off trip it’ll be a hired car.

Expanding upon this, in a PHEV the battery is relatively small and inexpensive compared to an EV. In the event it does fail it's a financial inconvenience and not effectively totaling the vehicle.

I tried playing Death Stranding on my iPhone 15 Pro. It looked fantastic but those touchscreen controls were horrendous.
I've been slowly shifting away from cloud connected, wi-fi connected smart home things towards zigbee and zwave. I've had hit-and-miss reliability with them which is unfortunate. Are there any brands you've used you recommend?
I'm hopeful that Matter, even with the slow start, will fix this mess. It feels like the tech stack is there and now we're just waiting on the market to catch up with releasing hardware to the standard.
