In heaven, macOS is GNU-licensed. GPL3+, nothing less.

The optimal case was always loading up the coprocessor memory and letting it crunch the data until it finishes. One nice thing was the low cognitive load at a time CUDA was not a great experience - it just pretended to be a normal computer, if a bit memory-starved. A classic “lopsided machine”, good for some things, not great for most others.

And I agree - it was getting a lot better by the time it was killed. I’d love to find a reasonably priced Phi machine, but it seems the latest batches, with proper virtualisation support, went straight into supercomputers.

Funny thing: modern Xeons are getting closer and closer to the core and thread counts of the Xeon Phis. A 6980P has 128 cores and 256 threads, with AVX-512 and AMX.

I've heard more than one complaining that Iran was an everybody problem because "nuclear weapons" and that the US is doing all the heavy lifting.

I usually reply to that with reminding them Obama solved the problem and that Trump destroyed that accomplishment out of spite.

She knows fully well where she’ll end up if she doesn’t play ball and allow the US to do whatever they want. That’s not what I’d call being in control.

All that’s left is a varnish of legality.

I want a telnet port connecting directly to the Hercules console when it runs headless, as that is the way it ends up running in Docker. The Hercules console does a lot of heavy lifting that could be implemented at the terminal (as even Windows now has a proper terminal). It went as far as allowing me to connect and see the console transcript, which is pretty already.

Another thing I want that I haven't figured out is to print to my network printers - they all do lpr and ipp, but Hercules direct to socket approach didn't work for me and I need to do more research on that. Ideally, the line in the config could be a pipe command where I could turn the page into PostScript to be netcat it to the printer. or massage it through a converter that took in an IBM line printer EBCDIC stream and spat out ASCII for a "normal" printer.

I really wish they released it under a GPL license. Unless an event starts an adoption uptick for greenfield projects (and it'd take some time for that). I wish they had an easy way to deploy an OpenVMS instance on a cloud service the same way IBM does with their POWER and Z machines (sadly, no Linux on POWER from them).

I prefer to say AIs are prone to misremember things, as well as humans do. The more you read and learn, the more material you have to get confused, unfortunately.

We might want to work around the certainty with which it misremembers things. I have a very large interval of "I have no idea", or "I don't remember" and rarely caught myself misremembering things (my children are far better at that). I assume my grandchildren will eventually improve their parents' scores by a wide margin.

They are in a tough spot. They have to pick between milking their legacy clients who have been running VMS workloads and don’t want to port them to anything else, and a much more risky attempt to develop a consulting ecosystem so those clients can remain on VMS indefinitely. This ecosystem would eat into their own support business at the expense of reducing incentives to migrate to different platforms.
