As for the crappy "purchasing power" argument for the SoC : let me point out that the Zune of all things has a better processor. If you look at hacker friendly devices, a game console called called "Wiz" from a small firm will be selling at $180 and has roughly a similar processor. Also "OpenPandora" console from a small firm has a OMAP3 and will sell for $330. Now you want me to believe that a $400 phone cannot spend $10 more on the SoC? When running generic apps is what it was built for??
An OMAP3 sells for somewhere around $50 in quantity (I think).

Well actually one of the reasons for the slowness in the video (disclaimer : dont own the phone, basing slowness on video) is because its processor is very slow. Its using a 400MHz ARM9 vs lets say 400MHz ARM11 on Nokia N95 or what is rumored to be 600MHz ARM11 in iPhone.
edit : That should mean that the N95 has at least twice as powerful processor as freerunner and the iphone maybe even 3x faster processor. IMO the processor chosen was just plain wrong given the goal of producing a smartphone. They should have chosen a faster SoC and forgone the GPS and accelerometers.
Is this one portable? I do use an external keyboard when I can but mine is too big to carry.

Take a break from your personal projects for a few months. Read physics or something or maths or just go and watch a few movies or play video games or go running or join karate. Basically anything but programming for a few months in your non-work time. Take a vacation if feasible.
Then come back after a few months with a fresh mind and evaluate your options and situation then.
I came to Canada from India. India is experiencing a telecom revolution right now because of the intense competition b/w the telcos. The call rates have dropped 10-30 times in the last 7-8 years. I was appalled at the cell phone rates here in canada.
Google code is a good place to host. Very fast to get started and you get a very clean website with all the basic tools. Bug reporting is simple so your users will be happy too. It uses SVN but google give you the option to host your repository somewhere else if you dont like SVN. However Google allows only a restricted set of licenses so you need to check their list of supported licenses.
launchpad is also an ok place to host code (and it allows any license) but it doesnt host wikis for example and some of the UI elements are rather radical and may not suit your taste. if you host on launchpad, you will need to host a proper website and/or wiki somewhere else.
Dont go with sourceforge. The site has become slow and full of ads which cover half your screen. The interface is clunky too.
edit : launchpad uses bazaar a distributed VCS.

I guess u are right. Macros people usually write are local but macros are just AST transformers after all. I was confusing between what happens during macro expansion (arbitrary computation including lets say doing any analysis and building metadata) versus the result of the macro expansion (a transformed AST).
What about global optimizations? Macros operate on local expressions only effectively. Things like global alias analysis still needs to be done outside them.
